What do the editors of MAA journals do? What is so different about editing expository mathematics? After my five years as editor of Mathematics Magazine, I have strong opinions about these matters. The goal of most mathematics journals is to print the very latest results from the forefront of research. The goal of Mathematics Magazine is to remind us all why we loved mathematics in the first place, with stimulating articles and notes accessible to advanced undergraduates.

LSAY Briefing Reports

This Briefing summarises three recent LSAY research reports based on a sample of 13 613 young people who were in Year 9 in 1995. It focuses on those young people who entered formal post-school study at a university or a TAFE institution, or undertook an apprenticeship or traineeship since leaving secondary school. The majority of these young people completed Year 12 in 1998, and 1999 was their first year of post-school study. About one in five members of the cohort had left school before completing Year 12 and about 60 per cent of them entered some other form of study …

Information on this cohort was first collected in 1995, when these young people were Year 9 students in Australian schools. Sociology

In order to understand the magnitude, direction, and geographic distribution of land-use changes, we evaluated land-use trends in U.S. counties during the latter half of the 20th century. Our paper synthesizes the dominant spatial and temporal trends in population, agriculture, and urbanized land uses, using a variety of data sources and an ecoregion classification as a frame of reference. A combination of increasing attractiveness of nonmetropolitan areas in the period 1970–2000, decreasing household size, and decreasing density of settlement has resulted in important trends in the patterns of developed land. Kennedy, H. P. EFFECTS OFSTRENGTH TRAINING ON THE QUADRICEPS TO HAMSTRING RATIO IN A FEMALE RECREATIONAL ATHLETE, 2005. Three recreational female athletes were tested on the effects a strength training program would have on their quadriceps to hamstring ratio. The subjects ranged in age from 24-33 years old. The program was an 8 week strength training program. One subject was unable to complete the program due to pregnancy and one was injured in a car wreck midway through the program. The subject who completed the 8 week training program showed overall improvement in lower extremity strength but did not show …
