Assessment Of Anti-Poaching Effort In Ruaha National Park, Tanzania, C. L. Nahonyo

Anti-poaching effort in Ruaha National Park for the period between January 1996 to June 1999 was evaluated in terms of strength, frequency and duration of patrols, area covered and success of patrols. It was found that the park spent 72.4 US$ km-2 year-1 on law enforcement. There were 72 rangers each required to patrol on the average 143 km2. A total of 1,255 patrols were conducted; patrols ranged from 14 to 43 trips per month and each lasted between 1 to 25 days and most were foot and vehicle patrols. Phosphorus Sorption In Relation To Soil Grain Size And Geochemical Composition In The Simiyu And Kagera River Basins, Tanzania, R. A. Tamatamah

The phosphorus sorption characteristics of eight surface soil samples representative of the land use and landscape in the Simiyu and Kagera River basins were determined using the Langmuir equation. The Langmuir P adsorption maximum (Cmax) ranged from 109 to 802 mg kg-1, while Langmuir coefficient (K) ranged from 59 to 736 mg L-1. Cmax and were positively correlated to clay content, aluminium (Al), and iron (Fe) and negatively correlated to calcium (Ca). By using stepwise regression, the combination of Al, Fe, clay and Ca predicted more than 94% of the variation in the P sorption capacity of soils samples from …

Petrography And Mineral Chemistry Of The Pelitic And Semi-Pelitic Gneisses Of The Merelani Tanzanite Mining Area, Northeastern Tanzania, E. P. Malisa

Sillimanite/kyanite + K-feldspar + quartz ± garnet + biotite ± Fe-Ti oxide-bearing rocks occur associated with calc-silicate rocks in the Merelani tanzanite mining area north-eastern Tanzania. The whole rock chemistry shows varying rock oxidation ratios, which are reflected in the mineralogical assemblages. Almandine garnet is oxidized to mixtures of hematite, quartz, and hydrous aluminosilicates in oxidized rocks and is absent in highly oxidized rocks. In the latter, ilmenite is oxidized into mixtures of rutile and hematite. Such relatively high temperature alteration/oxidation effects could have occurred with the influx of water. Absence of staurolite in these aluminium-rich rocks is indicative of …

A single stage anaerobic digester employing a sisal fibre waste fixed bed was studied for biogas production from sisal pulp waste. The fibre was colonized by microorganisms involved in biogas production. The sisal pulp waste to be digested was fed from the top and was sprinkled intermittently with recirculating leachate from the material. Organic loading rates of 0.1-10 kg volatile solids (VS) m-3d-1 could be applied and methane yields in the range of 0.13-0.48 m3 CH4 kg-1 VS added were obtained. In measuring component fraction in multiphase flows using tomographic techniques, it is desirable to use a high speed tomography system capable of generating 100 tomograms per second. The electrical capacitance tomography system in this regard is considered to be the best among the available tomographic techniques. However, due to its inherent limitations the system generates distorted reconstructed tomograms necessitating the use of extra signal processing techniques such as thresholding to minimize these distortions. Whilst thresholding technique has been effective in minimizing distortions, the additional computation associated with the process limits the speed of tomogram generation desired from the system. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether companies who are behind schedule in submitting theirfinancial statement to Bapepam tend to do more earnings management than those who are on time. This study also evaluates other factors of earnings management, such as leverage, firm size, availability of audit committee and independent board, and audit quality. Using the proxy of discretionary accruals as the indicator of earnings management, this study finds that behind-schedule companies show higher average of discretionary accruals than on-time companies. Successful resource discovery across heterogeneous repositories is highly dependent on the semantic and syntactic homogeneity of the associated resource descriptions in each repository. Ideally, consistent resource descriptions are easily extracted from each repository, expressed using standard syntactic and semantic structures, and managed and accessed within a distributed, flexible, and scalable software framework. In practice however, seldom do all three of these elements exist. To understand the concerns of orthopaedic surgical patients and to enhance the quality of nursing care, the pre-and postoperative anxiety and uncertainty levels of orthopaedic surgical patients were determined and the relations among these factors explored. A descriptive correlation design was used and 44 adult orthopaedic surgical patients were selected by convenience sampling from a medical center in Taipei. Data were collected through structured questionnaires to obtain relevant demographic variables, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Mishel's Uncertainty in Illness Scale (MUIS). Visual attention can be manipulated by temporal and spatial factors of stimuli. The purpose of this study is to investigate the underlying mechanism of visual spatial attention of healthy subjects through event-related potential (ERP) study.The subjects of the study were 17 healthy adults, mean age 23.3 years. The visual stimuli were generated by the Neurostim system and presented in groups of eight under three different conditions: cueing (valid, invalid), delay (100 ms, 800 ms) and visual field sides (right and left). Shoulder pain is one of the most troublesome problems evaluated in our clinic. Numerous special physical tests have been developed to localize the origin of such pain. Soft tissue ultrasound, as an ancillary procedure, offers multiple advantages in evaluation of shoulder disorders: reliability, reproducibility, no radiation exposure, and low cost. Many authors have demonstrated that a strong correlation exists between ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging in detecting shoulder pathology. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by trisomy on chromosome 21 that occurs in 1 of every 800 live births. Down syndrome can involve skeletal malformations that include patella or hip dislocation, genu valgus and atlanto-axial instability (AAI). Prompt recognition and treatment of the latter is important. This casereport describes an odontoid fracture due to AAI in a seven-year-old with Down syndrome.

It is often difficult to isolate the etiology of acute weakness in the critically ill population because of multiple etiologies. Recently, critical illness polyneuropathy (CIP), a syndrome of unknown etiology was added to the differential diagnosis. The frequency of CIP is approximately 50-70% in patient with sepsis and/or systemic inflammatory response syndrome and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Low back pain (LBP) has various adverse effects on the functional status of a patient's life, including a patient's sex life. This study evaluated the impact of LBP on the sexual life of patients. Forty-eight patients, including 27 men and 21 women, were recruited for this study. Their mean age was 44 years old. The average duration of LBP was 47.7 months. The mean visual analog scale (VAS) before the treatment of LBP was 5.9, while mean VAS at the time of the study was 3.6.Frequency of intercourse affected by LBP was noted in 60.9% of our patients. The purposes of this study were (1) to test the inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of using a tape measure to determine limb circumferences and (2) to report the 95% CI of standard error of measurement (SEM) of repeated measures by the same tester to determine whether a clinically important change has occurred.Forty-six college students (6 men, 40 women) with a mean age of 20 years old volunteered to participate in this study.
