Location Management In Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks Using Quorums And Clusters, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, David H.-C. Du, Ding-Zhu Du Oct 2005

Location Management In Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks Using Quorums And Clusters, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, David H.-C. Du, Ding-Zhu Du

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Position-based reactive routing is a scalable solution for routing in mobile ad hoc networks. The route discovery algorithm in position-based routing can be efficiently implemented only if the source knows the current address of the destination. In this paper, a quorum-based location management scheme is proposed. Location servers are selected using the minimum dominating set (MDS) approach, and are further organized into quorums for location update and location query. when a mobile node moves, it updates its location servers in the update quorum; when a node requests the location information of another node, it will send a query message to …

Common Pattern Discovery Using Earth Mover's Distance And Local Flow Maximization, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2005

Common Pattern Discovery Using Earth Mover's Distance And Local Flow Maximization, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a novel segmentation-insensitive approach for mining common patterns from 2 images. We develop an algorithm using the earth movers distance (EMD) framework, unary and adaptive neighborhood color similarity. We then propose a novel local flow maximization approach to provide the best estimation of location and scale of the common pattern. This is achieved by performing an iterative optimization in search of the most stable flows' centroid. Common pattern discovery is difficult owing to the huge search space and problem domain. We intend to solve this problem by reducing the search space through identifying the location …

Harry Potter & The Law: Family Life And Moral Character, James C. Smith Oct 2005

Harry Potter & The Law: Family Life And Moral Character, James C. Smith

Scholarly Works

Harry Potter's mistreatment by his Muggle family does not amount to a legal wrong. Notice that Dumbledore did not threaten the Dursleys with legal proceedings, either in Muggle or Wizard tribunals. The ethic of equitable treatment is societal and lacks a legal basis in Anglo-American family law. Family law has many facets; it is an amalgam of legal rules and principles. My focus is the lens of property law -- in particular, family property norms -- although it is also plain that the Dursleys have not violated non-property based family law norms.

Children’S Play In Cross-Cultural Perspective: A New Look At The Six Cultures Study , Carolyn P. Edwards Oct 2005

Children’S Play In Cross-Cultural Perspective: A New Look At The Six Cultures Study , Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

A qualitative and quantitative reanalysis of the Six Cultures data on children’s play, collected in the 1950s, was performed to revisit worlds of childhood during a time when sample communities were more isolated from mass markets and media than they are today. A count was performed of children aged 3 to 10 in each community sample scored as engaging in creative-constructive play, fantasy play, role play, and games with rules. Children from Nyansongo and Khalapur scored lowest overall, those from Tarong and Juxtlahuaca scored intermediate, and those from Taira and Orchard Town scored highest. Cultural norms and opportunities determined how …

"There Is Great Charity, But ..." Vincent De Paul And The Organization Of Charity, Thomas G. Fuechtmann Ph.D. Oct 2005

"There Is Great Charity, But ..." Vincent De Paul And The Organization Of Charity, Thomas G. Fuechtmann Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul was able to accomplish great works of charity because he was an extraordinary organizer and manager. His early experience at Chatillon-les-Dombes showed him the importance of organizing charity so that it could have effective, long-term results. Vincent’s methods are analyzed according to modern nonprofit organization theory, with particular emphasis on what he said and did regarding “foundation, mission and structure.” He attached special importance to meetings and staffing issues. The article also addresses how his ways of organizing can be applied to charity in the twenty-first century.

Vincentian Simplicity: A Core Leadership Trait, Thomas Mckenna C.M., S.T.D. Oct 2005

Vincentian Simplicity: A Core Leadership Trait, Thomas Mckenna C.M., S.T.D.

Vincentian Studies

In a time when there is an increasing gap between appearances and reality, the Vincentian virtue of simplicity—having one’s inner values and motivations match one’s outer behavior—is ever more essential. Vincent de Paul exemplified simplicity. He said it was a virtue of God and Jesus and that it was impossible to serve poor persons effectively without it. Elizabeth Seton also sought and exhibited a genuine presence in her relationships, both in her personal life and with those she served. As both saints demonstrated, simplicity is necessary for leadership. Authority is derived from faith that a leader truly is the person …

Leadership In Darkness And Light: Gender Considerations, Susanne Dumbleton Ph.D. Oct 2005

Leadership In Darkness And Light: Gender Considerations, Susanne Dumbleton Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

When certain leadership styles are assigned by gender, both men and women are stifled and shortchanged. Susanne Dumbleton examines the pitfalls of the traditional characteristics and types of actions that have been prescribed for each gender, especially for women. She defines politics as “the use and abuse of power,” and when women try to ignore politics, “passive complicity, irresponsible withdrawal, sacrifice [of their] destiny, and active complicity” can result. Each is explained in detail. Effective servant leaders of any gender must have a realistic view of human nature and maintain their faith in it despite its many negative aspects. They …

Sister Gen: A Case Study Of Vincentian Leadership, Joseph Mccann C.M., Ph.D. Oct 2005

Sister Gen: A Case Study Of Vincentian Leadership, Joseph Mccann C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

From 1961 to 1988, Genevieve O’Farrell, a Daughter of Charity, was the principal of Saint Louise’s Comprehensive College in Belfast. Her many achievements as a leader of the school and within Belfast are described, along with her own formation, the events and characteristics that made her a leader, and the lessons that may be drawn from her life and career. She consistently raised the school’s academic standards and promoted service to the community even while it was surrounded by the violence of the “Troubles.”

Being Creative In Vincentian Leadership: The Case Of The Society Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Eduardo Marques Oct 2005

Being Creative In Vincentian Leadership: The Case Of The Society Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Eduardo Marques

Vincentian Studies

The purpose of this paper is to present an example of an international society based on Vincentian leadership principles which has been in existence for 180 years. I intend to introduce my concept of a model of Vincentian leadership and present an overview and evolution of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVdP). Subsequently, an analysis of the adequacy of the Society as a model of Vincentian leadership is offered, articulating the sustainability of the Society based on this model. Finally, based on the SVdP experience, some recommendations are proposed to DePaul University’s project on Vincentian leadership.

Cross-Cultural Vincentian Leadership: The Challenge Of Developing Culturally Intelligent Leaders, Marco Tavanti Ph.D. Oct 2005

Cross-Cultural Vincentian Leadership: The Challenge Of Developing Culturally Intelligent Leaders, Marco Tavanti Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

As the Hay-Vincentian Leadership Project (HLP) becomes international in scope, Vincentian values must be applied in and sometimes adapted to cross-cultural contexts. The concepts of cultural diversity, cultural competence, and cultural intelligence are explained in general and against a Vincentian background. Qualities that make leaders effective in cross-cultural situations are explored. Vincent de Paul set an example for such success in the preparation he mandated for those going on foreign missions and in the sensitivity he showed in his own work with people from other cultures. Culture’s relationship to leadership is examined using the work of the anthropologist Edward Hall …

Translating Vincent De Paul For The 21st Century: A Case Study Of Vincentian Mission Effectiveness Efforts At Depaul University, Edward R. Udovic C.M., Ph.D. Oct 2005

Translating Vincent De Paul For The 21st Century: A Case Study Of Vincentian Mission Effectiveness Efforts At Depaul University, Edward R. Udovic C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Edward Udovic believes that the success that DePaul University enjoys today depends on its translation of the Vincentian mission and values into modern terms to meet modern needs. Like Vincent de Paul himself, the university is “values-driven, connected to the community, supportive of diversity . . . risk-tak[ing], innovative, and pragmatic.” The state of the Congregation is such that its members may lack a “physical presence, canonical sponsorship role, or governance role” at DePaul by 2023. However, it is already passing on its values to the lay members of the university, ensuring that its Vincentian character will continue even without …

Aid And Comfort: Rasul V. Bush And The Separation Of Powers Doctrine In Wartime, Ryan Mckaig Oct 2005

Aid And Comfort: Rasul V. Bush And The Separation Of Powers Doctrine In Wartime, Ryan Mckaig

Campbell Law Review

By failing to recognize the challenges facing political and military leaders in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, in reversing fifty-four years of precedent relied upon by the executive branch, and in failing to consider the political question doctrine, the Supreme Court in Rasul charted a dangerous constitutional course that could lead to greater judicial involvement in war-making powers and greater levels of conflict among the three branches. These trends will ultimately threaten the nation's ability to fight and win future wars. The decision is ill-advised, ill-timed, and invites unintended consequences.

Stepping Through Grutter'S Open Doors: What The University Of Michigan Affirmative Action Cases Mean For Race-Conscious Government Decisionmaking, Helen L. Norton Oct 2005

Stepping Through Grutter'S Open Doors: What The University Of Michigan Affirmative Action Cases Mean For Race-Conscious Government Decisionmaking, Helen L. Norton

Faculty Scholarship

In Grutter, a majority of the Court for the first time identified an instrumental justification for race-based government decisionmaking as compelling -- specifically, a public law school’s interest in attaining a diverse student body. Grutter not only recognized the value of diversity in higher education, but left open the possibility that the Court might find similar justifications compelling as well. The switch to instrumental justifications for affirmative action appears a strategic response to the Court’s narrowing of the availability of remedial rationales. A number of thoughtful commentators, however, have reacted to this trend with concern and even dismay, questioning whether …
