El Vih En La Ciudad De Buenos Aires: Obstáculos En El Acceso Al Tratamiento En El Sector Público, Erica Tai-Le Bliss Oct 2005

El Vih En La Ciudad De Buenos Aires: Obstáculos En El Acceso Al Tratamiento En El Sector Público, Erica Tai-Le Bliss

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The focus of my research is the access to HIV treatment in the public health sector in Buenos Aires. HIV testing and treatment are guaranteed, by law, financed completely by the government for patients in the public health sector who do not have any private insurance or social work insurance plan. Over three quarters of the registered cases of HIV are patients in the public sector. Although health care is free in the Capital, many patients don’t take HIV tests, seek treatment or eventually stop taking their medication. To investigate the motivations of the patients, I interviewed three sectors that …

The Transformation Of World Trade, Joost Pauwelyn Oct 2005

The Transformation Of World Trade, Joost Pauwelyn

Michigan Law Review

This Article contests the traditional view of the evolution of the world trade system. Rather than a unidirectional process of legalization focused exclusively on the system's normative structure, Part I of the Article, "The Explosion of the GATT Club," recounts the transformation from GATT to WTO as a bidirectional interaction between law and politics; in particular, between the system's legal-normative structure and its political, decision making branch Part II of this Article, "The Threat of a WTO Fortress," challenges the view that a choice must be made between politics and law or, put differently, between, on the one hand, democratic …

Signatures Of Ideology: The Case Of The Supreme Court's Criminal Docket, Ward Farnsworth Oct 2005

Signatures Of Ideology: The Case Of The Supreme Court's Criminal Docket, Ward Farnsworth

Michigan Law Review

Everyone suspects that Supreme Court justices' own views of policy play a part in their decisions, but the size and nature of the part is a matter of vague impression and frequent dispute. Do their preferences exert some pressure at the margin or are they better viewed as the mainsprings of decision? The latter claim, identified with legal realism, has been lent some support by political scientists who point out that some justices regularly vote for or against certain kinds of claims (for example, under the Fourth Amendment), or that votes in some areas are broadly predictable according to a …

The Changing Meaning Of Patent Claim Terms, Mark A. Lemley Oct 2005

The Changing Meaning Of Patent Claim Terms, Mark A. Lemley

Michigan Law Review

The claims of a patent are central to virtually every aspect of patent law. The claims define the scope of the invention, and their meaning therefore determines both whether a defendant's product infringes a patent and whether the patent is valid. One of the most significant aspects of patent litigation is "claim construction," the process of defining the words of the claim in other, theoretically clearer words. Courts construe the claims of the patent by starting with the plain meaning of their terms as they would be understood by a person having ordinary skill in the art, or PHOSITA. Claim …

Testing Minimalism: A Reply, Cass R. Sunstein Oct 2005

Testing Minimalism: A Reply, Cass R. Sunstein

Michigan Law Review

Some judges are less ambitious than others; they have minimalist tendencies. Minimalists are unambitious along two dimensions. First, they seek to rule narrowly rather than broadly. In a single case, they do not wish to resolve other, related problems that might have relevant differences. They are willing to live with the costs and burdens of uncertainty, which they tend to prefer to the risks of premature resolution of difficult issues. Second, minimalists seek to rule shallowly rather than deeply, in the sense that they favor arguments that do not take a stand on the foundational debates in law and politics. …

A Prudential Exercise: Abstention And The Probate Exception To Federal Diversity Jurisdiction, Christian J. Grostic Oct 2005

A Prudential Exercise: Abstention And The Probate Exception To Federal Diversity Jurisdiction, Christian J. Grostic

Michigan Law Review

Ann-Marie Brege's parents established an irrevocable trust in 1985, with Ann-Marie as sole beneficiary. When Merrill Lynch Trust Co. took over as trustee years later, however, the trust's principal dropped sharply, losing over half its value in just a few years. Ann-Marie sued in Michigan probate court, alleging that Merrill Lynch had violated its legal duties in administering the trust. Since Ann-Marie was from New York and Merrill Lynch had its headquarters in New Jersey, Merrill Lynch had an apparently easy argument for diversity jurisdiction. In an unremarkable turn of events, Merrill Lynch filed a notice of removal to federal …

"Electronic Fingerprints": Doing Away With The Conception Of Computer-Generated Records As Hearsay, Adam Wolfson Oct 2005

"Electronic Fingerprints": Doing Away With The Conception Of Computer-Generated Records As Hearsay, Adam Wolfson

Michigan Law Review

One night, in the hours just before daybreak, the computer servers at Acme Corporation's headquarters quietly hum in the silence of the office's darkened hallways. Suddenly, they waken to life and begin haphazardly sifting through their files. Several states away, a hacker sits in his room, searching through the mainframe via an internet connection. His attack is quick-lasting only a short five minutes-but the evidence of invasion is apparent to Acme's IT employees when they come in to work the next morning. Nearly a year later, federal prosecutors bring suit in the federal district court against the person they believe …

Intravenous Polyethylene Glycol Inhibits The Loss Of Cerebral Cells After Brain Injury, Andrew O. Koob, Bradley S. Duerstock, Charles F. Babbs, Yinlong Sun, Richard B. Borgens Oct 2005

Intravenous Polyethylene Glycol Inhibits The Loss Of Cerebral Cells After Brain Injury, Andrew O. Koob, Bradley S. Duerstock, Charles F. Babbs, Yinlong Sun, Richard B. Borgens

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

We have tested the effectiveness of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to restore the integrity of neuronal membranes after mechanical damage secondary to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) produced by a standardized head injury model in rats. We provide additional detail on the standardization of this model, particularly the use and storage of foam bedding that serves to both support the animal during the impact procedure and to dampen the acceleration of the brass weight. Further, we employed a dye exclusion technique using ethidium bromide (EB; quantitative evaluation) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP; qualitative evaluation). Both have been successfully used previously to evaluate …

A Dose-Response Curve For The Negative Bias Pressure Of An Intrathoracic Pressure Regulator During Cpr, Charles F. Babbs, Demetris Yannopoulos Oct 2005

A Dose-Response Curve For The Negative Bias Pressure Of An Intrathoracic Pressure Regulator During Cpr, Charles F. Babbs, Demetris Yannopoulos

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

An intrathoracic pressure regulator (ITPR) is a device that can be added to the external end of an endotracheal tube to create controlled negative airway pressure between positive pressure ventilations. The resulting downward bias of the airway pressure baseline promotes increased venous return and enhanced circulation during CPR and also during hypovolemic shock. In the present study we exercised a mathematical model of the human cardiopulmonary system, including airways, lungs, a 4 chambered heart, great vessels, peripheral vascular beds, and the biomechanics of chest compression and recoil, to determine the relationship between systemic perfusion pressure during CPR and the value …

Optimal Control Theory Applied To A Difference Equation Model Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Eunok Jung, Charles F. Babbs, Suzanne Lenhart, Vladimir A. Protopoescu Oct 2005

Optimal Control Theory Applied To A Difference Equation Model Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Eunok Jung, Charles F. Babbs, Suzanne Lenhart, Vladimir A. Protopoescu

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To apply the mathematical techniques of optimal control theory (OCT) to a validated model of the human circulation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), so as to discover improved waveforms for chest compression and decompression that maximize the systemic perfusion pressure (SPP). Methods: The human circulatory system is represented by seven difference equations, which describe the pressure changes in systemic vascular compartments caused by chest compression. The forcing term is the intrathoracic pressure generated by the external chest compression, which is taken as the “control” variable for the system. The optimum waveform of this forcing pressure as a function of time, …

Dynamic Modeling Of Crew Performance For Long-Duration Space Missions, Sara Goudarzi, A. J. Both, Jim Cavazzoni, Alexander Kusnecov Oct 2005

Dynamic Modeling Of Crew Performance For Long-Duration Space Missions, Sara Goudarzi, A. J. Both, Jim Cavazzoni, Alexander Kusnecov

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Crew time is one of the most valuable and limited resources during long-duration space missions. Crew time requirements fluctuate depending on variations in crew performance. The limited number of crewmembers, resources, and the myriad of tasks to be performed leave a tight schedule for crewmembers during long-duration space missions. This schedule needs to account for potential interventions (stress events) that may alter predicted performance and thus scheduling. A dynamic crew model using a stochastic Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model of interrupted time series was developed to account for the effects of potential stress events on crew performance. This …

Psychological And Psychophysiological Effects Of A High-Mountain Expedition To Tibet, Marcus Stück, Hans-Ullrich Balzer, Karl Hecht, Harry Schröder Oct 2005

Psychological And Psychophysiological Effects Of A High-Mountain Expedition To Tibet, Marcus Stück, Hans-Ullrich Balzer, Karl Hecht, Harry Schröder

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

In March 1999 a team of 8 mountaineers (6 men and 2 women) climbed up the 6th highest mountain of the world: The Cho Oyo (8201 m), located in the high mountains of Tibet. During the expedition, we investigated the effects of high mountaineering on various psychological variables (e.g., anxiety) and psychophysiological variables (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, skin-resistance) as well as the ability to relax at different points of time (2 premeasures before, three measures during, and one post-measure immediate after the Expedition). Due to a long-term monitoring of the skin resistance, we can summarize that three different adaptation levels …

Effects Of Thermal Stress On Dual Task Performance And Attention Allocation, Bradley Chase, Waldemar Karwowski, Michael E. Benedict, Peter M. Queseda Oct 2005

Effects Of Thermal Stress On Dual Task Performance And Attention Allocation, Bradley Chase, Waldemar Karwowski, Michael E. Benedict, Peter M. Queseda

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

A visual-visual dual task was designed to test the effect of the thermal environment on dual task performance and attention allocation. The temperatures selected for testing were 20 and 35°C Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) in experiment 1 and 25, 30 and 35°C Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) in experiment 2. In experiment 1, 34 volunteers were randomly assigned to one of the two temperature conditions. A variable representing accuracy on both tasks was coded such that a correct response was assigned only if the participant answered correctly on both tasks. In experiment 2, 42 volunteers were randomly assigned to …

Peace In Unity: 19th Century Irenic Motivations In European Unification, Robert Taft Keele Oct 2005

Peace In Unity: 19th Century Irenic Motivations In European Unification, Robert Taft Keele

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Hauptargumenten of politicians and citizens concerning the advantages and disadvantages of the EU are almost exclusively economic or political in nature: lower tariffs; loss of monetary instruments; immigration; disenfranchisement; etc. The object of my thesis is to remind everyone, amid the flurry of speculation and uncertainty prevalent in Europe since the French rejection of the EU constitution, that a major benefit of the European integration is peace, on a continent that has been ravaged by war for centuries. I prove that the establishment of peace was a major element in European unification by confirming links between peace movements and …
