A Multisite Photometric Campaign On The Pre-Main-Sequence ₰ Delta Scuti Pulsator Ip Per, V. Ripepi, T. D. Oswalt, S. Bernabei, M. Marconi, Et Al.

We present the results of a photometric multisite campaign on the δ Scuti Pre-Main-Sequence star IP Per. Nine telescopes have been involved in the observations, with a total of about 190 h of observations over 38 nights. Present data confirms the multiperiodic nature of this star and leads to the identification of at least nine pulsational frequencies. Comparison with the predictions of linear non-adiabatic radial pulsation models allowed us to identify only five of the nine observed frequencies, and to constrain the position of IP Per in the HR diagram. Compelling Interest, Forbidden Aim: The Antinomy Of Grutter And Gratz, Patrick S. Shin

This article explores the tension between the Grutter Court's capacious account of the value of racial diversity, on the one hand, and the Gratz Court's insistence on the constraining mechanism of individualized consideration, on the other. The article examines whether the promotion of diversity as a compelling interest can be reconciled with the requirement of individualized consideration under any coherent principle of equal treatment. The article concludes that the only way this can be done is to interpret the cases as rejecting the proposition that 'racial' diversity represents a compelling governmental interest and as implicitly adopting, instead, the idea that …

Ultracold Neutral Plasma Expansion In Two Dimensions, E. A. Cummings, J. E. Daily, Dallin S. Durfee, Scott D. Bergeson

An isothermal model of ultracold neutral plasma expansion is extended to systems without spherical symmetry. It is used to interpret new fluorescence measurements on ultracold neutral calcium plasmas. For a self-similar expansion, the fluid equations are solved both analytically and numerically. The density and velocity solutions are used to predict fluorescence signals induced by a laser beam weakly focused into the plasma. Despite the simplicity of the model, predicted fluorescence signals reproduce major features of the experimental data

We present a new, abstract definition for a generalized cwatset that produces notions of subcwatset and quotient cwatset that behave naturally. We use small cancellation theory to prove a result analogous to the statement that every group is isomorphic to some permutation group.

Analysis Of Indentation Loading Of Cortical Bone Using Acoustic Emission Techniques, Ashkan Safari, Ger Reilly, Brendan Mccormack

In this study, we recorded the number of Acoustic emission (AE) hits and related AE energy during indentation fracture of cortical bone using a PAC PCI-2 card and pico sensor. A threshold value of 43dB was used to filter premature trigger due to background noise. Registered AE hits had more than one count (threshold crossing). Amplifier gain was set at 40dB with a (0.1-1) MHz band pass filter. 8mm cubes of cortical bones were indented in the longitudinal direction at constant crosshead speed of 1 mm min-1 using a large 2D, 50˚ wedge indenter. This article is an empirically-based follow-up to a piece I published last year in the Journal of Legal Education entitled, On Collegiality, 54 J. Legal Educ. 406 (2004). It provides insight into the process of conducting empirical research and sets forth some preliminary – yet very intriguing – data and qualitative information gleaned from a survey responded to by more than 1200 law professors nationwide. The survey addressed a wide range of topics related to collegiality and job satisfaction in the legal-academic profession.

This work discusses the "voices" of teachers working "at the chalk face". We are interested in learning what teachers think and behave. Therefore, we conducted our research about their working conditions. We also developed teachers’ professional biographies to learn how these educators construct concepts and practices related to their profession and what constitutes their "professional culture". We understand that the professional culture characterizes teachers’ professional frameworks and choices; therefore, any attempt to successfully promote an educational reform, must understand and pay attention to the “professional culture”

Reliability And Validity Of Virtual Build Methodology For Ergonomics Analyses, Tinghao Wu

This study was conducted to assess the validity and reliability of the Virtual Build methodology for ergonomics design and analysis. Thirty-six human subjects participated in this study and performed a set of six tasks. The tasks were performed twice in both real and virtual environment. The subject?s motion in performing tasks was analyzed by ergonomics assessments by using Virtual Build methodology. Criteria-related validity was evaluated by comparing the Virtual Build ergonomic assessment results with manual calculation. Test-retest reliability was evaluated by correlating ergonomics assessment results between two trials. The result shows that the Virtual Build methodology is reliable for ergonomic …
