Irish Representations In The Films Of Jim Sheridan And Neil Jordan, Jeffrey K. Jack

This thesis explores four films from "second wave" directors Jim Sheridan and Neil Jordan: The Crying Game, The Butcher Boy, The Field, and The Boxer. In these films, Sheridan and Jordan add complexity to previously static film representations of Irish society and culture. The study analyzes the modifications Sheridan and Jordan make to the cultural and political representations of the "first wave" of Irish films, relating theoretical developments more traditionally used in literary studies, including "postcolonialism" and "postmodernism." It also explores how these four films have influenced more recent developments in Irish cinema, including the recent shifting of the settings …

Although a contested position, we believe that reporters and editors frame the news in a way that reflects their personal feelings and newsroom culture (Kuypers, 1997, 2002, 2005; Cooper, in press). Audiences usually receive their political news from only a few press sources; rarely do they read the original statements of those being reported upon.

The working group was charged with exploring virtually all facets of democracy and the rule of law, as they pertain to established constitutional democracies, societies undergoing "transitions to constitutional democracies," and those societies where democracy remains little more than a hopeful wish. Papers and much of the discussion during the two days probed beneath the structural formalities that are obvious and important requisites of democracy, to explore the subtexts of and cultural conditions for democracy and the rule of law, those features that may be so taken-for-granted that they usually go unacknowledged, let alone unexplored in discussion of democratic theory. …

Information overload has become a critical challenge within military operations. However, the problem is not so much one of too much information but of abundant information that is poorly organized and poorly represented. Here I describe a prototype information-action workspace, sometimes referred to as a knowledge visualization, to resolve this issue. Development proceeded through a systematic design sequence of cognitive analysis, knowledge representation and workspace design. The cognitive analysis focused on the specific information needed to support military planning and judgment. To support their teams in crisis, organizations seek to leverage advances in information technology. These advances include automation support to the warfighting team (e.g. an electronic checklist for a flight crew), as well as collaboration support such as linking engaged combat troops to intelligence services. While automated support is rapidly developing, very little consideration has been given to enhancing the collaboration support for teams that face crisis. Here we suggest a preliminary set of IT system attributes to support collaboration for teams that face crisis. Generally spoken, teamwork may be at considerable risk when new automated technologies are introduced at the Working Positions of operators. Automation may replace team functions, team structure and changes the composition of the team. Team roles are unavoidably redefined and communication patterns are altered. For Air Traffic Control, EUROCONTROL developed measures for the impact of new computerised systems (automation) on teamwork. This was done within the framework of EUROCONTROL's SHAPE project. This paper describes the development of a real-time automated transcription tool for assessing tactical communications in a DIS environment. Java-based tools were developed to capture simulated radio communications data from tactical training exercises conducted at the Warfighter Training Research Division of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Human Effectiveness Directorate. A representative set of audio data was handtranscribed and used as training material for a class-based statistical language model using a commercially available speech recognition system. The language model was designed to allow run-time input of callsign data to provide increased flexibility. The resulting system is a real-time automated speech-to-text transcription …

It is Dr. Vanossi's contention that Argentine federalism is today largely a fiction , as demonstrated by the fact that only the city of Buenos Aires and three or four of the country's provincial governments are financially viable, with the rest depending on large and continuing subsidies from the national government. The solution, he contends, is "regionalization", a process by which two or more provinces, through interprovincial agreements approved by the national Congress, would unite for certain specified governmental purposes. This process, Dr. Vanossi points out, has always been authorized by the country's Constitution.

LCS (L)(3) 86 (a Littoral Combat Ship also known as "The Mighty Midget"). The folder lists several audio tapes but does not contain a transcript. It does contain an interview logbook, an unpublished memoir, news articles, pictures, and two class assignments done for Dr. Winton and Professor Sias's Honors 396 course at Marshall University.

The idea of Texas staggered Richard Harding Davis. That, in any event, is how the youthful managing editor of Harper's Weekly portrayed his response to the Lone Star State after boarding a train in New York City and heading south in January 1892 for a three-month tour of Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. At twenty-eight, already a much-heralded journalist for his investigative reports on Philadelphia's underworld, and his gripping accounts of the devastating Johnstown Flood of 1889, Davis had been editing Harper's tor a year and was eager for a change of pace. Strikes were once considered an effective “go to” weapon in the labor movement. As union density has declined, so has the frequency and effectiveness of strikes. Strikes were once a tried and true tactic for labor unions to force employers to make concessions at the bargaining table. However over the past twenty-five years strikes have become a somewhat risky gamble with uncertain, often disastrous results. This paper examines the new role of public relations campaigns that labor unions employ in bargaining as it relates to work stoppages. Burchell et al's [1985] historical analysis of value added in the UK attributes its rise and fall to societal circumstances which initially encouraged the voluntary disclosure of the Value Added Statement (VAS) by companies and then, following societal change, influenced its disappearance. This paper supplements Burchell et al's thesis by arguing that a fuller explanation for the disappearance of the VAS can be found by also considering the contents of the statement itself. An empirical study of the information in the VASs of UK companies shows that they were unlikely to give support to the economic interests of the employee …

In the area of stress-strength models, there has been a large amount of work as regards estimation of the reliability R = Pr(X < Y). The algebraic form for R = Pr(X < Y) has been worked out for the vast majority of the well-known distributions when X and Y are independent random variables belonging to the same univariate family.
