Influence Of Eliot's Modernism In Two Early Novels And Autobiographies Of Doris Lessing, M. Catherine Burns Jan 2005

Influence Of Eliot's Modernism In Two Early Novels And Autobiographies Of Doris Lessing, M. Catherine Burns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

There is deep personal and artistic empathy for T. S. Eliot's modernist poetry in Doris Lessing's early novels and two later autobiographies. As Eliot did, Lessing uses the modernist doctrine of difficulty to portray the education and development of the writer-artist as a long, problematic process, involving prodigious, rigorous, energetic reading efforts, and self-conscious reflexive writing. Lessing also frequently quotes other authors, and she thoroughly uses subverted allusive schemes and extrusive structural complications to render realism in her narratives more vividly. Her mature aesthetic sets at a distance a sense of personal displacement, exile, and uncertain cultural identity and echoes …

Textual Masks Of Nathanael West, Jared Bezet Jan 2005

Textual Masks Of Nathanael West, Jared Bezet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The novels of Nathanael West are preoccupied with the deconstruction of Western civilization, satirizing and parodying its most respected ideologies and literatures; they are also involved in recreating both cultural and personal identity from the deconstructed fragments of this culture by performances or masks of identity. The textual mask is a trope that performs both these functions in the work of Eliot, Pound, and Joyce, but especially in West. West demonstrated the mask's destructive force and constructive potential in both his writing and his personal life. The novels---The Dream Life of Balso Snell, Miss Lonelyhearts, A Cool Million, and The …

Theoretical And Experimental Studies Of Multisensory Integration As A Coupled Dynamical System, Collins G. Assisi Jan 2005

Theoretical And Experimental Studies Of Multisensory Integration As A Coupled Dynamical System, Collins G. Assisi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Perception and behavior are mediated by a widely distributed network of brain areas. Our main concern is, how do the components of the network interact in order to give us a variety of complex coordinated behavior? We first define the nodes of the network, termed functional units, as a strongly coupled ensemble of non-identical neurons and demonstrate that the dynamics of such an ensemble may be approximated by a low dimensional set of equations. The dynamics is studied in two different contexts, sensorimotor coordination and multisensory integration. First, we treat movement coupled to the environment as a driven functional unit. …

State Planning Strategies To Implement The Scientific Based Research Components Of The Nclb Act, Shereeza F. Mohammed Jan 2005

State Planning Strategies To Implement The Scientific Based Research Components Of The Nclb Act, Shereeza F. Mohammed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The recent shift toward favoring the scientific paradigm and evidence-based practice has resulted in the comprehensive use of the term Scientific Based Research (SBR) in the No Child Left Behind Act. This shift to economically introduce scientifically based interventions to nationally raise student achievement has taken on greater significance. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among a state's capacity to implement the SBR components, its contextual environment, its implementation strategy and the comprehensiveness of its planned policy implementation. The data for Capacity to implement, Context and Strategy were gathered through a 66-item survey sent to State …

Using The Braden Scale To Predict Heel Pressure Ulcer Development In Hospitalized Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease, Charlene A. Demers Jan 2005

Using The Braden Scale To Predict Heel Pressure Ulcer Development In Hospitalized Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease, Charlene A. Demers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to attempt to determine if the Braden Scale predicts heel pressure ulcer development in hospitalized patients with peripheral vascular disease. A retrospective chart review was conducted on 235 medical records of patients admitted to the hospital with a primary and secondary diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease. One hundred thirty-two of the records reviewed were excluded from the study due to a confounding diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Of the 103 medical records that met criteria, only three patients developed a heel pressure ulcer. All patients were white and over the age of 80. …

Un-Resistive Reproduction? Medical Hegemony, Pregnancy, And Reality Television, Serena R. Bruno Jan 2005

Un-Resistive Reproduction? Medical Hegemony, Pregnancy, And Reality Television, Serena R. Bruno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A new trend of unscripted, reality television programming chronicling the real-life childbirth experiences of American women and families has gained considerable ground in recent years. These programs, especially Discovery Health's BirthDay and The Learning Channel's A Baby Story, record, edit and broadcast the prenatal, childbirth, and postnatal health care of "everyday" women volunteers, including their physical, social, and emotional concerns. This research study focuses attention on the authoritative, technological and therefore, medically hegemonic perspective of this type of programming, illuminating through content, textual, focus group, and survey analyses the abundance of medically hegemonic meanings in both the discursive and visual …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this paper is to enable the reader to gain a truer understanding of the treatment of Urinary Incontinence over the past one hundred and fifty-five years. Specifically this work will compare medical and nursing interventions to those of the alternative medicine and lay or popular medicine practices. Grounded in historicism, the study produces a documentary effect allowing the reader to empathize with the healers of the past. The social context of the specific time frame was integrated into the study illuminating the Jacksonian and Progressive eras. In addition, the birth of professional nursing as we know it …

When We Hurt The Ones We Love: Predicting Violence Against Women From Men's Mate-Retention Behaviors, Aaron T. Goetz Jan 2005

When We Hurt The Ones We Love: Predicting Violence Against Women From Men's Mate-Retention Behaviors, Aaron T. Goetz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Mate-retention behaviors are designed to solve several adaptive problems, such as deterring a partner's infidelity and preventing defection from the relationship. Although many mate-retention behaviors appear to be innocuous romantic gestures (e.g., giving flowers), some may be harbingers of violence. Here, the relationship between men's mate-retention and violence against women was investigated. In Study 1, men reported their use of mate-retention behaviors and violence in their relationships. Study 2 assessed women's reports of their partners' mate-retention behaviors and their partners' violence against them. Study 3 secured husbands' reports of their mate retention and wives' reports of their husbands' violence. As …

Validating The Search, Experience, And Credence Product Classification Framework In A Model Of Patronage Intentions, Tulay. Girard Jan 2005

Validating The Search, Experience, And Credence Product Classification Framework In A Model Of Patronage Intentions, Tulay. Girard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Although the Internet as a shopping medium provides convenience to easily access products, the U.S. e-commerce retail sales still make up a very small percentage of the U.S. total retail sales. To better understand what influences consumers' choices to shop for products or services on the Internet versus local retail stores, this study tests the influence of antecedent factors of consumer patronage intentions for Internet and local retail stores. The study draws the antecedent factors from the extant literature, which include product classes, the importance consumers place on retailer attributes, and consumer perceived risk in product classes. Because the Internet …

Moody Investing And The Supreme Court: Rethinking The Materiality Of Information And The Reasonableness Of Investors, Peter H. Huang Jan 2005

Moody Investing And The Supreme Court: Rethinking The Materiality Of Information And The Reasonableness Of Investors, Peter H. Huang

Publications

This Article critically analyzes the judicial decisions and reasoning of the United States Supreme Court and lower courts accepting certain defenses in securities fraud litigation. This Article develops how and why the core notions of materiality of information and the reasonable investor should be revised in light of recent empirical data, experimental evidence, and theoretical models of moody investing. This Article proposes modifying three recent developments in materiality doctrine to take into account moody investing. In particular, this Article argues that current judicial treatment of puffery is flawed because it neglects the power of puffery to alter moods. This Article …

The Hillmon Case, The Macguffin, And The Supreme Court, Marianne Wesson Jan 2005

The Hillmon Case, The Macguffin, And The Supreme Court, Marianne Wesson

Publications

The case of Mutual Life Insurance Company v. Hillmon is one of the most influential decisions in the law of evidence. Decided by the Supreme Court in 1892, it invented an exception to the hearsay rule for statements encompassing the intentions of the declarant. But this exception seems not to rest on any plausible theory of the categorical reliability of such statements. This article suggests that the case turned instead on the Court's understanding of the facts of the underlying dispute about the identity of a corpse. The author's investigations into newspaper archives and the original case documents point to …

Actor And Partner Effects Among Marital Dyads In Retirement Adjustment And Well-Being, Julie Guenette Howard Jan 2005

Actor And Partner Effects Among Marital Dyads In Retirement Adjustment And Well-Being, Julie Guenette Howard

Dissertations and Theses

Our understanding of and interest in how retirement impacts the lives of individuals have grown over the past 20 years. Studies to date have ranged from small, convenience samples composed primarily of men to large, national longitudinal samples of men and women from different professional and socioeconomic backgrounds. There is consensus in the literature that older adults generally function better with a partner; however, gaps remain. We know little about the impact of retirement beyond the individual, although research in other areas on couples has produced evidence of crossover and contagion effects relative to depression and other outcomes, including absenteeism, …

Absence Of Intellect? Spike Tv And A Crisis In Masculinity, Wesley R. Akers Jan 2005

Absence Of Intellect? Spike Tv And A Crisis In Masculinity, Wesley R. Akers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study analyzes the programming, narrative structure and scheduling of Spike TV to reveal how this "first network for men" continues to support hegemonic masculinity through a strategy of gendered narrowcasting. Such representations mediate a crisis in masculinity by glorifying action-oriented males and, therefore, marginalize intellectual representations. The study suggests that such hegemonically masculine representations are contributing to the academic struggles currently plaguing young males in our culture.

Carnival, Sacred And Sovereign: The Intellectual Intersection Of Bakhtin And Bataille, Jared E. Lemole Jan 2005

Carnival, Sacred And Sovereign: The Intellectual Intersection Of Bakhtin And Bataille, Jared E. Lemole

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The common intellectual ground shared by Mikhail Bakhtin and Georges Bataille routinely suffers from a dearth of consideration. Yet Bakhtin's celebrated "carnival" writings are invested in undeniably Bataillean interests---death, excess, transgression, heterogeneity. Both Bakhtin and Bataille inherited the Wagnerian Nietzsche's nostalgia for effusive communal ritual, collapsing the boundaries between bodies and the boundary between life and death (this is "transgression," eroticism , according to Bataille; too often transgression is spoken of in terms of stealing a pornographic magazine). Thus bodies in Bakhtin and Bataille are "open," mainly in comic and inglorious ways, and death is the cynosure of festival. Death …

Nature/Culture Clash: The Transnational Trade In Gmos, Dayna Scott Jan 2005

Nature/Culture Clash: The Transnational Trade In Gmos, Dayna Scott

All Papers

This paper aims to offer a fresh perspective into what is at stake in the cross-cultural trade dispute over genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) by subjecting a particular discursive sample, the parties’ submissions to the WTO panel, to critical scrutiny. The first step involves a survey of the rhetorical strategies deployed by the parties’ in the presentation of their arguments to the Panel. Next, I embark on the task of ‘disassembling the double helix’. My use of the term ‘double helix’ in this analysis refers to the close coupling of scientific and legal discourses in the trade regime: science and law are …

Enhancing The Status Of Non-State Actors Through A Global War On Terror?, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2005

Enhancing The Status Of Non-State Actors Through A Global War On Terror?, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

Soon after September 11, President Bush declared a global war on terrorism and members of terrorist groups "combatants." These declarations are not only generally inconsistent with international law; they also reverse the trend regarding the legal status of international non-state actors. For decades, law-abiding non-state actors, such as international humanitarian aid organizations, enjoyed ever-expanding rights on the international plane. Professor Schachter observed how this trend came at the expense of the nation-state. He also predicted, however, that the nation-state would not fade away any time soon. And, by the late Twentieth Century, the trend toward enhanced status was noticeably slowing. …

Democracy Without A Net? Separation Of Powers And The Idea Of Self-Sustaining Constitutional Constraints On Undemocratic Behavior, James A. Gardner Jan 2005

Democracy Without A Net? Separation Of Powers And The Idea Of Self-Sustaining Constitutional Constraints On Undemocratic Behavior, James A. Gardner

Journal Articles

The United States Constitution is designed to achieve good government by relying on two distinct systems: a primary system that achieves good governance through democratic electoral accountability; and a set of self-sustaining structural backup systems designed for situations in which the democratic system fails, and which operate by limiting the ability of bad rulers to do serious harm to the public good. A key premise of this kind of dual structural arrangement is that effective backup systems must operate independently of primary democratic systems; because they are needed precisely when democratic mechanisms have failed, they cannot depend for their success …

Roper V. Simmons And Our Constitution In International Equipoise, Roger P. Alford Jan 2005

Roper V. Simmons And Our Constitution In International Equipoise, Roger P. Alford

Journal Articles

In Roper v. Simmons, the Court unequivocally affirms the use of comparative constitutionalism to interpret the Eighth Amendment. It does not, however, provide an obvious theoretical basis to justify the practice. This Article searches for a theory to explain the comparativism in Roper using the theories advanced in the author's previous scholarship. It concludes that of the colorable candidates, natural law constitutionalism is the most plausible explanation, with the attendant problems associated therewith. The Article concludes with an analysis of the possible ramifications of the Court's comparative approach, suggesting that it may be pursuing a Constitution that is in international …
