Shadow Detection By Combined Photometric Invariants For Improved Foreground Segmentation, Filiz Bunyak, Ilker Ersoy, S. R. Subramanya

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Detection and tracking of moving objects are the essential steps of many video understanding applications such as traffic monitoring, video surveillance and visual event recognition. Moving object detection process segments the scene into foreground (moving) and background regions. Moving cast shadows cause serious problems in this process because they can easily be misclassified as foreground. This misclassification may lead to drastic changes in the shapes of objects or merging of multiple objects. in this paper, we present a method to detect moving cast shadows to improve the performance of moving object detection. the foreground regions are processed in terms of …

Technology Competition And Optimal Investment Timing: A Real Options Perspective, Robert J. Kauffman, X. Li Jan 2005

Technology Competition And Optimal Investment Timing: A Real Options Perspective, Robert J. Kauffman, X. Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Companies often choose to defer irreversible investments to maintain valuable managerial flexibility in an uncertain world. For some technology-intensive projects, technology uncertainty plays a dominant role in affecting investment timing. This article analyzes the investment timing strategy for a firm that is deciding about whether to adopt one or the other of two incompatible and competing technologies. We develop a continuous-time stochastic model that aids in the determination of optimal timing for managerial adoption within the framework of real options theory. The model captures the elements of the decision-making process in such a way so as to provide managerial guidance in …

The Effects Of Shilling On Final Bid Prices In Online Auctions, Robert J. Kauffman, Charles A. Wood Jan 2005

The Effects Of Shilling On Final Bid Prices In Online Auctions, Robert J. Kauffman, Charles A. Wood

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An increasing number of reports of online auction fraud are of growing concern to auction operators and participants. In this research, we discuss reserve price shilling, where a bidder shills in order to avoid paying auction house fees, rather than to drive up the price of the final bid. We examine the effect that premium bids have upon the final selling price, since they are linked with reserve price shill bids. We use 10,260 eBay auctions during April 2001, and identify 919 auctions involving 322 sellers and 1583 bidders involved in concurrent auctions for the exact same item. We find …

Optimal Location Of Intermodal Freight Hubs, Illia Racunica, Laura Wynter Jan 2005

Optimal Location Of Intermodal Freight Hubs, Illia Racunica, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present an optimization model that has been developed to address the problem of increasing the share of rail in intermodal transport through the use of hub-and-spoke type networks for freight rail. The model defined is a generalization of the hub location problem in that it allows for non-linear and concave cost functions on different segments. A linearization procedure along with two efficient variable-reduction heuristics was developed for its resolution, making use of recent results on polyhedral properties of this class of problems. Computational experience and a qualitative analysis from a case study on the Alpine freight network is provided.

Consistency Management Among Replicas In Peer-To-Peer Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Takahiro Hara Jan 2005

Consistency Management Among Replicas In Peer-To-Peer Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Takahiro Hara

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent advances in wireless communication along with peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm have led to increasing interest in P2P mobile ad hoc networks. In this paper, we assume an environment where each mobile peer accesses data items held by other peers which are connected by a mobile ad hoc network. Since peers' mobility causes frequent network partitions, replicas of a data item may be inconsistent due to write operations performed by mobile peers. In such an environment, the global consistency of data items is not desirable by many applications. Thus, new consistency maintenance based on local conditions such as location and time …

Energy-Efficient Rate Adaptation Mac Protocol For Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2005

Energy-Efficient Rate Adaptation Mac Protocol For Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Resource constraints in ad hoc wireless networks require that they are energy efficient during both transmission and rate adaptation. In this paper, we propose a novel energy-efficient rate adaptation protocol that selects modulation schemes online to maximize throughput based on channel state while saving energy. This protocol uses the distributed power control (DPC) algorithm (M. Zawodniok et al., 2004) to accurately determine the necessary transmission power and to reduce the energy consumption. Additionally, the transmission rate is altered using energy efficiency as a constraint to meet the required throughput, which is estimated with queue fill ratio. Moreover, back-off scheme is …

Esd Susceptibility Characterization Of An Eut By Using 3d Esd Scanning System, Kai Wang, Jayong Koo, Giorgi Muchaidze, David Pommerenke

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrostatic discharges (ESD) can lead to soft-errors (e.g., bit-errors, wrong resets etc.) in digital electronics. The use of lower threshold voltages and faster I/O increases the sensitivity. In the analysis of ESD problems, an exact knowledge of the affected pins and nets is essential for an optimal solution. In this paper, a three dimensional ESD scanning system which has been developed to record the ESD susceptibility map for printed circuit board is presented and the mechanisms that the ESD event couples into the digital devices is studied. The ESD susceptibility of a fast CMOS EUT is characterized by generating the …

Genetic Algorithms Based Economic Dispatch With Application To Coordination Of Nigerian Thermal Power Plants, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, G. A. Bakare, U. O. Aliyu, Y. K. Shu'aibu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The main focus of this paper is on the application of genetic algorithm (GA) to search for an optimal solution to a realistically formulated economic dispatch (ED) problem. GA is a global search technique based on principles inspired from the genetic and evolution mechanism observed in natural biological systems. A major drawback of the conventional GA (CGA) approach is that it can be time consuming. The micro-GA (µGA) approach has been proposed as a better time efficient alternative for some engineering problems. The effectiveness of CGA and µGA. to solving ED problem is initially verified on an IEEE 3-generating unit, …

Experimental results are provided, showing that the proposed controller provides more effective damping than the conventional PI controller in a typical …

Making The Graduate-Industry Connection, Mariesa Crow Jan 2005

Making The Graduate-Industry Connection, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many utilities are beginning to ramp up their recruiting and hiring efforts to attract bright young engineering graduates into the industry to replace the large numbers of engineers that have recently retired or will retire in the next few years. Unfortunately, the long drought in hiring brought on by the uncertainty of deregulation and the perspective that the industry is "old and conservative" has caused a mismatch in the interests of young engineers and the companies that want to hire them. in addition, the number of young people pursuing engineering degrees is decreasing as they become attracted to other lucrative …

Model For Estimating Radiated Emissions From A Printed Circuit Board With Attached Cables Due To Voltage-Driven Sources, Todd H. Hubing, Hwan-Woo Shim Jan 2005

Model For Estimating Radiated Emissions From A Printed Circuit Board With Attached Cables Due To Voltage-Driven Sources, Todd H. Hubing, Hwan-Woo Shim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Common-mode currents induced on cables attached to printed circuit boards (PCBs) can be a significant source of unintentional radiated emissions. This paper develops a model for estimating the amount of common-mode cable current that can be induced by the signal voltage on microstrip trace structures or heatsinks on a PCB. The model employs static electric field solvers or closed-form expressions to estimate the effective self-capacitances of the board, trace, and/or heatsink. These capacitances are then used to determine the amplitude of an equivalent common-mode voltage source that drives the attached cables. The model shows that these voltage-driven common-mode cable currents …

Optimal Control Parameters For A Upfc In A Multimachine Using Pso, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The crucial factor affecting the modern power systems today is load flow control. The unified power flow controller (UPFC) is an effective means for controlling the power flow and can provide damping capability during transient conditions. The UPFC is controlled conventionally using PI controllers. The optimal design of the PI controllers for a UPFC is a challenging task and time consuming using the conventional techniques. This paper presents an approach using particle swarm optimization (PSO) for the design of optimal conventional controllers for a UPFC in a multimachine power system. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the …

Suitability Of Pulse Train Control Technique For Bifred Converter, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Ali Emadi, Mark Telefus, Anatoly Shteynberg

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pulse TrainTM control scheme is presented and applied to a boost integrated flyback rectifier/energy storage dc-dc (BIFRED) converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), which avoids the light-load high-voltage stress problem. In contrast to the conventional control techniques, the principal idea of Pulse Train technique is to regulate the output voltage using a series of high and low energy pulses generated by the current of the inductor. The applicability of the proposed technique to both the input and magnetizing inductances of BIFRED converter is investigated. Analysis of BIFRED converter operating in DCM as well as the output voltage ripple …

A Neural Network Based Wide Area Monitor For A Power System, Xiaomeng Li, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the deregulation of power industry, many tie lines between control areas are driven to operate near their maximum capacity, especially those serving heavy load centers. Wide area controllers (WACs) using wide-area or global signals can provide remote auxiliary control signals to local controllers such as automatic voltage regulators, power system stabilizers, etc to damp out inter-area oscillations. The power system is highly nonlinear system with fast changing dynamics. In order to have an efficient WAC, an online system monitor/predictor is required to provide inter-area information to the WAC from time to time. This paper presents the design of an …

Gene Regulatory Networks Inference With Recurrent Neural Network Models, Rui Xu, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Large-scale time series gene expression data generated from DNA microarray experiments provide us a new means to reveal fundamental cellular processes, investigate functions of genes, and understand their relations and interactions. To infer gene regulatory networks from these data with effective computational tools has attracted intensive efforts from artificial intelligence and machine learning. Here, we use a recurrent neural network (RNN), trained with particle swarm optimization (PSO), to investigate the behaviors of regulatory networks. The experimental results, on a synthetic data set and a real data set, show that the proposed model and algorithm can effectively capture the dynamics of …

Negative Reinforcement And Backtrack-Points For Recurrent Neural Networks For Cost-Based Abduction, Donald C. Wunsch, Ashraf M. Abdelbar, M. A. El-Hemaly, Emad A. M. Andrews

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Abduction is the process of proceeding from data describing a set of observations or events, to a set of hypotheses which best explains or accounts for the data. Cost-based abduction (CKA) is an AI formalism in which evidence to be explained is treated as a goal to be proven, proofs have costs based on how much needs to be assumed to complete the proof, and the set of assumptions needed to complete the least-cost proof are taken as the best explanation for the given evidence. In this paper, we introduce two techniques for improving the performance of high order recurrent …

Optimal Dynamic Neurocontrol Of A Gate-Controlled Series Capacitor In A Multi-Machine Power System, Swakshar Ray, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Edson H. Watanabe, F. D. De Jesus

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the design of an optimal dynamic neurocontroller for a new type of FACTS device - the gate controlled series capacitor (GCSC) incorporated in a multi-machine power system. The optimal neurocontroller is developed based on the heuristic dynamic programming (HDP) approach. In addition, a dynamic identifier/model and controller structure using the recurrent neural network trained with backpropagation through time (BPTT) is employed. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the dynamic neurocontroller and its performance is compared with that of the conventional PI controller under small and large disturbances.
