Carbon Canister Fuel Vapor Recovery Adsorption Performance Using Experimental Techniques, Kyle Benne Jan 2005

Carbon Canister Fuel Vapor Recovery Adsorption Performance Using Experimental Techniques, Kyle Benne

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Laboratory experiments have been conducted on a 1 L carbon bed canister in order to measure the performance of the canister in containing automotive fuel vapors that would otherwise escape from the fuel tank. The investigation simulates gasoline fuel vapor using iso-octane vapor carried in helium gas. Tests were conducted at two different concentrations of the hydrocarbon. The results indicate that the performance of the canister is improved for higher inlet concentrations. For the lower concentration there is a significant point where the performance of the canister degrades rapidly, however this point is not as clear for the higher concentration. …

This study examines the interaction between carbon fiber and aluminum. The results showed that surface finish and the manufacturing of such interface did play a significant role in the strength of each sample.

Making Sense Of Nanocrystal Lattice Fringes, P. Fraundorf, Wentao Qin, Peter Moeck, Eric Mandell Jan 2005

Making Sense Of Nanocrystal Lattice Fringes, P. Fraundorf, Wentao Qin, Peter Moeck, Eric Mandell

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The orientation dependence of thin-crystal lattice fringes can be gracefully quantified using fringe-visibility maps, a direct-space analog of Kikuchi maps [Nishikawa and Kikuchi, Nature (London) 121, 1019 (1928)]. As in navigation of reciprocal space with the aid of Kikuchi lines, fringe-visibility maps facilitate acquisition of crystallographic information from lattice images. In particular, these maps can help researchers to determine the three-dimensional lattice of individual nanocrystals, to 'fringe-fingerprint' collections of randomly oriented particles, and to measure local specimen thickness with only a modest tilt. Since the number of fringes in an image increases with maximum spatial-frequency squared, these strategies (with help …

Continuous Solidification Of Yba2cu3o7−X By Isothermal Undercooling, Fatih Dogan Jan 2005

Continuous Solidification Of Yba2cu3o7−X By Isothermal Undercooling, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Growth kinetics and microstructural development of single crystal YBa2Cu3O7−x (Y123) superconductors, prepared by a melt texturing method under isothermal undercooling conditions, were investigated. At small undercooling, ΔT = 6 K, the initial growth of Y123 crystal was terminated at a size of ∼8 mm × 8 mm in the semisolid phase before the entire sample was fully solidified through the peritectic reaction. With incremental increase of ΔT, the growth of the crystal continued so that the whole sample (22 mm diameter and 8 mm thickness) solidified as a single crystal. Termination of the crystal growth …

Farming At Wylie : A Technical Biography 1933- 1963, Bruce Rhind Jan 2005

Farming At Wylie : A Technical Biography 1933- 1963, Bruce Rhind

Theses : Honours

The genesis of this project was my father Graeme Rhind's collection of photographs of farming in Western Australia, dating back to 1929 when his parents first began farming in the wheatbelt near Wyalkatchem. I was interested in the way these photographs illustrated changing farming practices during the following three decades, and how they provided both documentary evidence and stimulated recall of memory. I was also concerned by the loss of knowledge of old photographic collections. The photographs are insufficient by themselves because each image requires specialised knowledge which the viewer may not possess, and that knowledge is lost with the …

Scholarly Profit Margins And The Legal Scholarship Network: Reflections On The Web, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2005

Scholarly Profit Margins And The Legal Scholarship Network: Reflections On The Web, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Controversy surrounding scholastic rankings arises, in part, because of complexities associated with measuring academic contributions. Legal researchers use various methodologies to assess scholarly production and impact but all suffer from inherent limitations and none provides data useful to scholarly self-reflection. The 10-year old Legal Scholarship Network (LSN) offers potential to improve considerably on both scores of public and personal assessment. This Essay critically evaluates approaches to conceptualizing scholarly profit margins, explores how LSN can enhance these conceptions, and opens new frontiers for this innovative Web-based repository of legal writing.

Ip Transactions: On The Theory & Practice Of Commercializing Innovation, F. Scott Kieff Jan 2005

Ip Transactions: On The Theory & Practice Of Commercializing Innovation, F. Scott Kieff

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

All too often within organizations and communities, innovations are not generated or put to use as rapidly or as broadly as they could be. Chief targets for blame include the problems of transaction costs, agency costs, lack of coordination, and improper incentives. Borrowing from the rich literature in the field generally known as new institutional economics, which has studied these types of problems more broadly, this Article elucidates how some practical tools might be expected to mitigate such problems. Particular arrangements of formal law and informal practice may help reach across the "valley of death" between early stage technologies and …

Organizational Conflicts Of Interest: A Growing Integrity Challenge, Daniel I. Gordon Jan 2005

Organizational Conflicts Of Interest: A Growing Integrity Challenge, Daniel I. Gordon

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Recent experience in the United States suggests that public procurement professionals increasingly encounter a particular kind of conflict of interest, organizational conflicts of interest (OCIs). OCIs arise in situations where an entity plays two or more roles that are, in some sense, at odds with one another. This article endeavors to set out some points for consideration in this increasingly important area. Alleged OCIs have been identified in various activities of the U.S. federal procurement process, from contracts for security services in Iraq to public/private competitions for work to be performed in the U.S. This article first suggests reasons for …

Education, Technological Progress And Economic Growth, Winston T. H. Koh, Hing-Man Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

An important role of education – and the resultant accumulation of human capital – for a less-developed economy is to facilitate technology diffusion in order for it to catch up with developed economies. This paper presents a model linking education, the accumulation of physical capital and technological progress. In the model, investment in education and the accumulation of physical capital are complementary, and intertwine with the technology progress through related effects on technology diffusion and the expansion of the technology frontier. The allocation of effort to education, the optimal savings rate and the technology gap are endogenously determined in the …

An Analytical Framework Of Science Parks And Technology Districts With An Application To Singapore, Francis Koh, Winston T. H. Koh, Ted Feichin Tschang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper analyzes the question: What does it take for science parks and technology districts to evolve and grow? We propose an analytical framework to examine the gestation, evolution, and sustainability of science parks and related but broader regional phenomena such as technology districts. The framework comprises three aspects of a science park's development: growth mechanisms, level of technological capabilities, and nature of its integration with national or global markets. The main growth mechanisms we identify are government-led infrastructure provision, agglomeration effects, and continual self-renewal through the creation of new businesses. We apply this framework to analyze Singapore's science park …

Protecting The Communication Structure In Sensor Networks, S. Olariu, Q. Xu, M. Eltoweissy, A. Wadaa

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In the near future wireless sensor networks will be employed in a wide variety of applications establishing ubiquitous networks that will pervade society. The inherent vulnerability of these massively deployed networks to a multitude of threats, including physical tampering with nodes exacerbates concerns about privacy and security. For example, denial of service attacks (DoS) that compromise or disrupt communications or target nodes serving key roles in the network, e.g. sink nodes, can easily undermine the functionality as well as the performance delivered by the network. Particularly vulnerable are the components of the communications or operation infrastructure. Although, by construction, most …

Assessing The Deterrent Effect Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act's Certification Provisions, Kathleen A. Lacey, Barbara C. George, Clyde Stoltenberg

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In the 1970s, Congress reacted to the financial wrongdoing of Lockheed Corp. and others by enacting § 102 of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), which (1) requires corporations to keep records that accurately reflect financial transactions and (2) mandates a system of internal accounting controls. Going a step further in 2002, Congress responded to the Enron scandal by imposing personal accountability on chief executive officers in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOA). After recounting responses prior to the existence of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to corporate abuses and the historical background of the SEC's requirements for corporate financial reporting …

Between The Red Tent And The Red Haze : Representations Of Perimenopause, Sheena Maureen Mcchlery Jan 2005

Between The Red Tent And The Red Haze : Representations Of Perimenopause, Sheena Maureen Mcchlery

Theses : Honours

Perimenopause is a relatively new word in our language. It is found in a variety of texts, from medical literature to popular literature and the Internet. In this thesis, I explore some current representations of perimenopause. To do so, I utilise feminist analyses of representations of premenstrual syndrome and menopause. A feminist theoretical framework guides my methodology and organisation and interpretation of data. My methodology includes an extensive literature review of feminist theorising around premenstrual syndrome and menopause, as well as discourse analysis of textual representations of perimenopause and the use of a reflexive journal as a 'perimenopausal' woman. My …

Towards Persistent Resource Identification With The Uniform Resource Name, Luke Brown Jan 2005

Towards Persistent Resource Identification With The Uniform Resource Name, Luke Brown

Theses : Honours

The exponential growth of the Internet, and the subsequent reliance on the resources it connects, has exposed a clear need for an Internet identifier which remains accessible over time. Such identifiers have been dubbed persistent identifiers owing to the promise of reliability they imply. Persistent naming systems exist at present, however it is the resolution of these systems into what Kunze, (2003) calls "persistent actionable identifiers" which is the focus of this work. Actionable identifiers can be thought of as identifiers which are accessible in a simple fashion such as through a web browser or through a specific application. This …
