Distortional Buckling Of Cold-Formed Steel Members In Bending, Cheng Yu, Benjamin W. Schafer Jan 2005

Distortional Buckling Of Cold-Formed Steel Members In Bending, Cheng Yu, Benjamin W. Schafer

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

Laterally braced cold-formed steel beams generally fail due to local and/or distortional buckling in combination with yielding. For many cold-formed steel (CFS) studs, joists, purlins, or girts, distortional buckling may be the predominant buckling mode. However, distortional buckling of CFS beams remains a largely unaddressed problem in the current North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (NAS). Further, adequate experimental data on unrestricted distortional buckling in bending is unavailable. Therefore, two series of bending tests on industry standard CFS C and Z-sections were performed and presented in this dissertation. The testing setup was carefully designed in …

Maltese Fisheries And The Sustainability Of Resources Around The Maltese Islands, Matthew Camilleri Jan 2005

Maltese Fisheries And The Sustainability Of Resources Around The Maltese Islands, Matthew Camilleri

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Despite the socio-cultural importance of Maltese fisheries, a very limited number of studies and reports on the industry have been published, and scientific studies on the interaction between the Maltese fishing fleet and the fisheries resources exploited have never been carried out. Data collection schemes to monitor Maltese fisheries were also found to be extremely limited, however, this study has analysed the information arising from recently initiated data collection programmes, coordinated by the author, related to the fleet, its activities and the resources exploited; these programmes were namely a fishing fleet census, catch and effort sampling schemes and trawl surveys. …

Comparative Advertising In The United States And In France, Charlotte J. Romano Jan 2005

Comparative Advertising In The United States And In France, Charlotte J. Romano

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Comparative advertising has been widely used for over thirty years in the United States. By contrast, the use of this advertising format has traditionally been-and still is-very marginal in France. The term "comparative advertising" refers to any form of advertising in which a trademark owner draws a comparison between his product, service, or brand and that of a competitor. The central issue of this article is to determine why, despite identical guiding policies, comparative advertising remains unusual in France while it is commonplace in the United States. Attempting to answer that question unavoidably raises numerous related issues: can the two …

Setting A Global Standard: The Case For Accounting Convergence, David Tweedie, Thomas R. Seidenstein Jan 2005

Setting A Global Standard: The Case For Accounting Convergence, David Tweedie, Thomas R. Seidenstein

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

As capital markets play an increasingly central role in today's modern economies, policy-makers are confronted with the question of how to assure the continued effective functioning of these markets and, in particular, how to develop a sound financial reporting infrastructure. Recent experience suggests that such a reporting infrastructure must be built on accounting standards that are consistent, comprehensive, and based on clear principles to enable financial reports to reflect underlying economic reality.

A Dual Catastrophe Of Protectionism, Sungjoon Cho Jan 2005

A Dual Catastrophe Of Protectionism, Sungjoon Cho

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Suppose that a consortium of wealthy and powerful local industries, acting through lawmakers captured by these industries, managed to pass a statute, damaging to the larger public welfare, purely for a protectionist purpose. Suppose further that this statute victimizes exports from a small, poor country such as Vietnam, to a large, rich country such as the United States, because these imported products are cheaper and thus pose a competitive threat to rival domestic industries. Suppose also that courts in the importing country can do little to stop this chain of events. Rational individuals might find these events objectionable, if not …

Query Engine Of Novelty In Video Streams, James Kang Jan 2005

Query Engine Of Novelty In Video Streams, James Kang

Theses

Prior research on novelty detection has primarily focused on algorithms to "detect" novelty for a given application domain. Effective storage, indexing and retrieval of novel events (beyond detection) are largely ignored as a problem in itself. In light of the recent advances in counter-terrorism efforts and link discovery initiatives, the need for effective data management of novel events assumes apparent importance. Automatically detecting novel events in video data streams is an extremely challenging task. The aim of this thesis is to provide evidence to the fact that the notion of novelty in video as perceived by a human is extremely …

Surface Modification Of Plga Biomaterials For Site-Directed Immobilization Of Growth Factors, Jessica Bennett Lynn Sharon Jan 2005

Surface Modification Of Plga Biomaterials For Site-Directed Immobilization Of Growth Factors, Jessica Bennett Lynn Sharon

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Biodegradable polymer materials, specifically poly(lactic-co-glycolide) (PLGA) can be used as bone replacements for bone regeneration. Scaffolds can be prepared to be porous to induce bone growth into a scaffold so that it is replaced with natural tissue as the polymer degrades. However, simply using PLGA will result in formation of scar tissue rather than regeneration of natural bone. Therefore focus has turned to attaching growth factors to the PLGA molecules to elicit a specific cellular response when the implant is placed in the body. Site-directed immobilization utilizes specific groups on both the biomaterial and biomolecule so that growth factors can …

Development Of Protein-Imprinted Polysiloxane Biomaterials: Protein Selectivity And Cellular Responses, Kyoungmi Lee Jan 2005

Development Of Protein-Imprinted Polysiloxane Biomaterials: Protein Selectivity And Cellular Responses, Kyoungmi Lee

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Surface modification is an extensively researched approach in order to overcomethe limitations, and improve the performance of orthopedic and dental implants. It is atthe surface of the implant materials that the initial interactions of tissues or body fluidstake place. Therefore, surface properties of biomaterials are the important factors that cancontrol these biological responses. Molecular imprinting is a surface modificationtechnique that creates specific recognition sites on the surface of biomaterials. Todevelop the recognition sites, a functional monomer is assembled with templatebiomolecule and then crosslinked. After removal of the template, the surface can rebindthe molecules. Therefore, desired reactions can be initiated at …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Cupc Based Organic Solar Cells, Balaji Parthasarathy Jan 2005

Fabrication And Characterization Of Cupc Based Organic Solar Cells, Balaji Parthasarathy

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

In this work, organic solar cells of the configuration ITO/Pedot:PSS/CuPc/PTCBI/Al (Indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonic acid/copper phthalocyanine/3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic bisbenzimidazole/aluminum) were investigated. A high open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.15 V was obtained when the PTCBI layer was 7 nm thick. Lower Voc values were observed for the same structure with silver, copper and gold electrodes instead of aluminum. However, short-circuit current density (Jsc) with these electrodes was much higher (4 mA/cm2) than in the case of aluminum (0.12 mA/cm2). Results were interpreted in terms of a modified CuPc/Al Schottky diode for the thin PTCBI case and a CuPc/PTCBI heterojunction for the thick …

Pierre Bayle's Philosophical Commentary On The Words Of Jesus Christ: Compel Them To Come In, John Kilcullen, Chandran Kukathas Jan 2005

Pierre Bayle's Philosophical Commentary On The Words Of Jesus Christ: Compel Them To Come In, John Kilcullen, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this defence of religious toleration, Bayle discusses the words attributed to Jesus Christ in Luke 14:23, “And the Lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be full.” Bayle contends that the word compel cannot mean “force.” From this perspective, he constructs his doctrine of toleration based on the singular importance of conscience. Bayle argues that if the orthodox have the right and duty to persecute, then every sect will persecute since every sect considers itself orthodox. The result will be mutual slaughter, something God …

Centennial Bibliography On The History Of American Sociology, Michael R. Hill Jan 2005

Centennial Bibliography On The History Of American Sociology, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

THE CENTENNIAL BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN SOCIOLOGY is intended as an inclusive clearinghouse for sources, studies, and other references that illuminate the origins and subsequent development of the sociological enterprise in the United States of America.2 As such, this bibliography is necessarily provisional and is envisioned as an on-going project to which further citations may be added as they are discovered and as new works are published. Due to the enormous scope of the project, and the short time frame within which the initial compilation was completed, countless useful and insightful references have been unintentionally omitted. Some portions …

Publishing Archaeology In Science And Scientific American, 1940-2003, R. L. Lyman, Michael J. O'Brien, M. B. Schiffer Jan 2005

Publishing Archaeology In Science And Scientific American, 1940-2003, R. L. Lyman, Michael J. O'Brien, M. B. Schiffer

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

Many new, or processual, archaeologists of the 1960s argued that Americanist archaeology became scientific only in the 1960s. The hypothesis that the rate of publication of archaeological research in Science and Scientific American increased after about 1965, as new archaeologists sought to demonstrate to their peers and other scientists that archaeology was indeed a science, is disconfirmed. The rate of archaeological publication in these journals increased after 1955 because the effort to be more scientific attributed to the processualists began earlier. Higher publication rates in both journals appear to have been influenced by an increased amount of archaeological research, a …

Quality Costs And Enterprise Size In The Manufacturing Industry: A Survey Of American Society For Quality (Asq) Members, Suhansa Rodchua Jan 2005

Quality Costs And Enterprise Size In The Manufacturing Industry: A Survey Of American Society For Quality (Asq) Members, Suhansa Rodchua

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Companies can lose money because they fail to use significant opportunities to improve their costs of quality. Most cost accounting data are not revealed to the public and are rarely exchanged among businesses, and there is no known study testing the effect of organization size, i.e., small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and large organizations, on quality costs. The study identified important factors and measures contributing to a successful quality cost program implementation and developed an empirically based model for quality costs in the manufacturing environment. The study used the Quality Cost Model, or PAF (prevention, appraisal, and failure costs) model …
