Sexual conflict occurs when individuals of one sex express traits that reduce the fitness of their mates. Males of many species harass females to gain copulations, which benefits males by increasing the number of offspring they sire but imposes energetic and opportunity costs on the females they harass. This thesis examined the fitness costs of sexual harassment to females, the energetic costs of mating to males, and the factors influencing the intensity of male competition for mates in the western mosquitofish Gambusia affinis. In this study, mitochondrial transcript information from a recent EST project wasextended to obtain complete mitochondrial genome sequence for 5 tiger salamandercomplex species (Ambystoma mexicanum, A. t. tigrinum, A. andersoni, A. californiense,and A. dumerilii). For the first time, aspects of mitochondrial transcription in arepresentative amphibian are described, and then complete mitochondrial sequencedata are used to examine salamander phylogeny at both deep and shallow levels ofevolutionary divergence. The available mitochondrial ESTs for A. mexicanum (N=2481)and A. t. tigrinum (N=1205) provided 92% and 87% coverage of the mitochondrialgenome, respectively. Phytopathogenic bacterium, Xylella fastidiosa, causes a number of economically important diseases, including Pierces disease (PD) of grape and bacterial leaf scorch (BLS) of a number of landscape trees. In Kentucky (KY), BLS affects a number of shade trees including many oak and maple species. In 2001, PD was diagnosed in grapevines in western KY. Xylella fastidiosa is also detected in many asymptomatic landscape plants and grasses. A sequential imaging system using a flat bed scanner interfaced to a personal computer was developed to study seed germination and vigor. The utility of the system was demonstrated in studies relating aspects of seed vigor in impatiens seed lots and for dormancy release in two woody perennials. Impatiens seed lots were kept in storage for 6 months to obtain a range in vigor levels. The ability to see differences at the individual seed level was possible because of the development of the sequential imaging system. Atmospheric-pressure diffuse discharge plasmas are susceptible to instabilities and, in particular, to arcing (the glow-to-arc transition). Some of the most promising approaches to ‘stabilizing’ atmospheric-pressure plasmas are based on the recognition that arc formation can be avoided when the plasmas are generated and maintained in spatially constricted geometries with dimensions from tens to hundreds of microns. Known as microplasmas or microdischarges, these weakly-ionized discharges represent a new and fascinating realm of plasma science in which several scientific issues, such as the potential breakdown of pd scaling and the role of boundary-based phenomena, come to the fore. Lead-based paints are commonly used for painting steel bridge structures. Soils in the immediate vicinity of older bridges have been contaminated with Pb as a result of normal weathering and peeling of the paint coupled with removal prior to repainting. The objectives of this project were to assess the extent of lead contamination near highway bridges and to evaluate phytoremediation and immobilization as means of remediation. We examined soils in the vicinity of approximately 20 bridges in Indiana that had been repainted recently and were know to have been painted originally with Pb-based paint. Assessment of angry patients with mental retardation or borderline intellectual functioning is time consuming. Existing assessment tools may be inadequate for gathering data and for guiding treatment, thus presenting a challenge for practitioners. The Anger Disorders Scale (DiGiuseppe & Tafrate, 2001) samples the cognitive, affective, and behavioral components of anger. However, this scale is a self-report survey for adults of average or higher intellectual functioning. This investigation provided a feasibility test of the "Anger Disorders Interview for persons diagnosed with Mental Retardation" (ADIMR), a modified version of the Anger Disorders Scale designed as a clinical interview for cognitively limited patients …

For economical and ecological reasons, efficiency and profitability ofswine production relies heavily on the way pigs utilize key nutrients such as P,which is considered a potential pollutant of water ecosystems. Although cerealgrains and oilseed meals contain enough P to fulfill the biological needs of pigs,most of this P is tightly bound as phytate. As pigs do not have enough phytase(PHY) to cleave P from phytate, it is excreted in the feces. To prevent adeficiency, diets have traditionally been supplemented with highly availableinorganic sources of P. A series of acute (96h) toxicity tests were conducted on six species of crayfish inthe family Cambaridae. Toxicity values fell into a sensitive group comprising Orconectesplacidus and Procambarus acutus (LC 50= 0.368mg Cd/L - 0.487mg Cd/L; LC10= 0.048mg Cd/L - 0.092 mg Cd/L) and tolerant group comprising O. juvenilis, O. virilis, P.alleni, and P. clarkii (LC 50= 2.44 mg Cd/L - 3.30 mg Cd/L; LC10= 0.386 mg Cd/L -0.947 mg Cd/L). Crystal structures of anhydrous pinacol, the hexagonal pinacol, pinacol monohydrate, and pinacol hexahydrate were studied. In all the structures crystal packing is unusual and complicated. The origin of the complexity may be the difficulty in filling space densely and while also satisfying the H-bonding requirements when the molecule has few internal degrees of freedom.

Five 15-crown-5 complexes of M(NO₃)₂ (M = Cu, Zn, Mg, Co, Mn) were synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The system is rich in polymorphs. Nine definite solid-state phases were identified. More phases probably exist in the solid state …

Cadherin is a cell adhesion protein that is significant in tissue formation. The protein is comprised of an extracellular region, a transmembrane segment and a cytoplasmic domain. The extracellular region contains five independently folded Pbarrel domains. They communicate with one another through calcium ions that bind at the interface between each domain. Our laboratory is interested in characterizing the interactions that the extracellular domains participate in. Calmodulin is the quintessential member of the EF-hand family of calcium binding proteins. Two mutants of the C-domain of Calmodulin were created as a series of proteins that can be used as model 1-site calcium binding systems, terminal glutamate in Site 3 was mutated to either glutamine or aspartate, mutations were expected to abrogate binding in the mutated site such that only Site 4 is functional. There was minimal overall perturbation to the folding and stability of the apo-state. Picric acid is an explosive historically produced and disposed of at the Louisiana Army Ammunitions Plant (LAAP). The potential for natural degradation was investigated in two studies by creating picric acid slurries with four LAAP samples of sediment of variable composition. While the first study combined the sediment with picric acid without alteration to the sediment, the second study sterilized the sediment before the slurries were created. The purpose of the soil sterilization was to quantify the role of microbes in the degradation process. Problem. A survey of the literature revealed that there was little by way of empirical study on the relationship between youth ministry and attitudes, beliefs, and values held by young people. We empirically tested the anecdotal evidence that youth ministry is effective in the transmission of beliefs and values. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether Seventh-day Adventist youth ministry in North America makes any difference in the lives of youth in the Seventh-day Adventist school system.

In 1975, the US Fish and Wildlife Service listed the grizzly bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Following the listing, a recovery plan was drafted in which the Bitterroot Ecosystem of central Idaho and extreme western Montana was one of six proposed grizzly bear recovery areas. It was the only one of the six, however, which did not contain a resident population of grizzlies. The Fish and Wildlife Service eventually accepted a proposal submitted by a coalition of environmental and timber industry groups. The present study has established that physiological concentrations of estradiol can modulate stress-induced increases in plasma epinephrine (EPI). In anesthetized female rats, insulin-induced hypoglycemia (0.25 U/kg) increased plasma EPI concentration to a significantly greater extent in 14-day ovariectomized (OVEX) rats compared to sham-operated controls. In 17-estradiol (E2)-replaced OVEX rats, the hypoglycemia-induced rise in plasma EPI was significantly reduced compared to OVEX rats. This suppression was due to both decreased adrenal medullary output and increased clearance of EPI. Adrenal venous EPI concentration was significantly reduced in OVEX+E2 rats, suggesting that EPI secretion from the adrenalmedulla was decreased by E2 replacement. The …

Despite distinct dissimilarities, diverse cancers express several common pro-tumorigenic traits. We present here evidence that the pro-apoptotic protein Par-4 utilizes one such common tumorigenic trait to become selectively activated and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. Elevated PKA activity noted in cancer cells activated the apoptotic function of ectopic Par-4 or its SAC domain, which induces apoptosis selectively in cancer cells and not in normal or immortalized cells. PKA preferentially phosphorylated Par-4 at the T155 residue within the SAC domain in cancer cells. Moreover, pharmacological-, peptide- or siRNA-mediated inhibition of PKA activity in cancer cells resulted in abrogation of both T155 …
