Where Do White People Come From? A Foucaultian Critique Of Whiteness Studies, Ladelle Mcwhorter
Where Do White People Come From? A Foucaultian Critique Of Whiteness Studies, Ladelle Mcwhorter
Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications
Over the past 15 years we have seen the rise of a field of inquiry known as Whiteness Studies. Two of its major tenets are (1) that white identity is socially constructed and functions as a racial norm and (2) that those who occupy the position of white subjectivity exercise ‘white privilege’, which is oppressive to non-whites. However, despite their ubiquitous use of the term ‘norm’, Whiteness Studies theorists rarely give any detailed account of how whiteness serves to normalize. A case is made here that we can only understand how whiteness normalizes if we place the development of white …

"Every Shut Eye, Ain't Sleep": Exploring The Impact Of Crack Cocaine Sentencing And The Illusion Of Reproductive Rights For Black Women From A Critical Race Feminist Perspective, Deleso Alford Washington
Journal Publications
For purposes of this paper, I will address societal regulations imposed upon the Black wombman's ability to control her reproductive rights. As we - Critical Race Feminist ("CRF") theorists who are becoming more empowered Critical Race Feminist activists - engage in necessary dialogue, there must be an appropriate point of departure. Once CRF theorists open our eyes, we will see what I refer to as "her-story." We will also see that it is time to move into action mode in order to address the illusion of reproductive rights for Black women.
Mr. Atod’S Wild Ride: What Do Alcohol, Tobacco, And Other Drugs Have In Common?, David T. Courtwright
Mr. Atod’S Wild Ride: What Do Alcohol, Tobacco, And Other Drugs Have In Common?, David T. Courtwright
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
All researchers agree that individuals can become intoxicated by and dependent on alcohol, tobacco, and other psychoactive drugs. But they have disagreed over whether, and to what extent, drug pathologies comprise a unitary medical problem. Most critically, does addiction have a biological common denominator? Consensus on this question has shifted back and forth. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, physicians often studied and treated various drug addictions together, working under the “inebriety” paradigm. By the mid-twentieth century the inebriety paradigm had collapsed. Tobacco and alcohol had split off, both in the medical research community and in western popular …

Toward Developing A Provenance Ontology For Biological Images, Jun Liu, Sudha Ram
Research & Publications
Recording and maintaining metadata of biological images has been a challenging issue in life sciences. Our research focuses on managing provenance, an important type of metadata for biological images. We develop an ontology that captures the semantics of provenance for biological images. We also describe a software system that helps record and maintain provenance in a convenient way.
An Sem Study Of The Sporulation Process Of Pandora Neoaphidis And Neozygites Fresenii, Özlem Kalkar
An Sem Study Of The Sporulation Process Of Pandora Neoaphidis And Neozygites Fresenii, Özlem Kalkar
Turkish Journal of Biology
The objective of this study was to investigate the development of fungal pathogens in aphid hosts and identify structures characteristic of each fungal species. Aphids infected by Pandora neoaphidis and Neozygites fresenii were incubated for different time periods and examined by SEM. In P. neoaphidis, hyphal bodies concentrated in clumps beneath the cuticle and these formed rosette patterns consisting of a central structure, the developing cystidium, surrounded by developing conidiophores. Rhizoids were the first structure emerging from the P. neoaphidis-killed aphid. Primary spores were formed after 6 h and secondary spores after 10 h of incubation. In N. fresenii, the …

The magnitude of the Harry Potter phenomenon alone would make it worthy of consideration; the fact that it is children's literature, and thus may play a significant part in forming a future generation's attitudes toward law and legal institutions, makes it even more so. The various contributions to this article explore various aspects of law and culture as presented in or viewed through the Harry Potter stories. The contributions of James Charles Smith and Danaya Wright address the depiction of families in the narratives and the limited role and development of family law. Benjamin H. Barton's contribution considers the failings …

Embracing Segregation: The Jurisprudence Of Choice And Diversity In Race And Sex Separatism In Schools, Nancy Levit
Embracing Segregation: The Jurisprudence Of Choice And Diversity In Race And Sex Separatism In Schools, Nancy Levit
Faculty Works
Fifty years after Brown v. Board of Education, segregation based on race and sex is sweeping the nation's educational systems. Courts are rapidly dismantling desegregation orders, and when those desegregation orders end, school districts racially resegregate. At precisely the same time this end to racial desegregation is occurring, the government is beginning to sponsor sex segregation in schools as well. The No Child Left Behind Act provides over $400 million in federal funds for experiments in education, such as single-sex schools and classes. Embracing Segregation draws connections between the end of racial desegregation and the beginning of government-sponsored sex segregation …
Of Desi, J. Lo And Color Matters: Law, Critical Race Theory The Architecture Of Race, Imani Perry
Of Desi, J. Lo And Color Matters: Law, Critical Race Theory The Architecture Of Race, Imani Perry
Cleveland State Law Review
In this article I want to posit two ways in which a critique of the black white binary leads us to understandings of race and racism that are useful for the struggles of all peoples of color. The first is, the critique should lead us to advocate for an understanding of race as an architecture rather than categorical. The second argument is that when we focus upon race as an architecture it leads us away from a linear notion of racial hierarchy with white at the top and black at the bottom, and towards a sense that the distribution of …
Law, Ethics, And Complexity: Complexity Theory & (And) The Normative Reconstruction Of Law, Julian Webb
Law, Ethics, And Complexity: Complexity Theory & (And) The Normative Reconstruction Of Law, Julian Webb
Cleveland State Law Review
My intention in this paper is a modest one, and a preliminary to more detailed analysis of the relevance of complexity theory to law. Accordingly, this paper presents an argument in three phases: it looks first at the nature of complexity and the philosophical grounds which, I suggest, inform a social theory of complexity; second, it ascribes characteristics which can be seen as constitutive of complexity, and applies those to the field of law, before looking (third) at how an acknowledgment of complexity can assist us in the process of normative reconstruction.

High Quality Dna Isolation Method For Chickpea Genotypes, Hasi̇be Ci̇ngi̇lli̇, Abdulkadi̇r Akçi̇n
Turkish Journal of Biology
In chickpea breeding genetic studies of individual plants need to be evaluated at the DNA level using molecular markers. A simple and reliable DNA extraction method is a prerequisite. This small-scale method is cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-based and extracts DNA from 1 to 3 folded young leaves processed in a 1.5 ml tube with 0.5 ml of extraction buffer and homogenized using an electric drill. Compared with the micro-prep method the improved mini-prep CTAB method is highly efficient and much cheaper in terms of time, chemical use and labor input. About 49 samples per day can easily be processed by one …

Emerging Vector-Borne Diseases In A Changing Environment, Nurdan Özer
Turkish Journal of Biology
Vector-borne infectious diseases are emerging or resurging as a result of changes in public health policy, demographic and societal changes, insecticide and drug resistance, shift in emphasis from prevention to emergency response, genetic changes in pathogens in the last two decades of the twentieth century. Climate changes also can influence the emergence and reemergence of these diseases which are malaria, dengue, yellow fever, plague, filariasis, louse-borne typhus, lyme disease, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis and viral diseases. West Nile virus is just the latest example of this type of invasion by exotic virus. This paper will provide an overview of the distribution, reasons …

Identification Of Alkaliphilic Bacillus Species Isolated From Lake Van And Its Surroundings By Computerized Analysis Of Extracellular Protein Profiles, İsmet Berber, Elçi̇n Yeni̇dünya
Turkish Journal of Biology
Five reference Bacillus species and 17 native alkaliphilic Bacillus strains, isolated from the water of Lake Van and the soil surrounding it, were identified using phenotypic characteristics and extracellular protein profiles by the method of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). According to the phenotypic characteristics, all the native isolates were Gram-positive, aerobic, endospore-forming, motile, facultatively alkaliphilic Bacillus spp. It was also found that the native alkaliphilic Bacillus isolates were distinguished phenotypically from other Bacillus species. A numerical analysis based on the resulting extracellular protein profiles revealed 5 distinct clusters: native isolates and B. megaterium formed 4 clusters that varied …
A Gene Expression Study Of The Tgf-\Beta Signaling Pathway Components In Differentiating Pc12 Cells, Işil Aksan Kurnaz
A Gene Expression Study Of The Tgf-\Beta Signaling Pathway Components In Differentiating Pc12 Cells, Işil Aksan Kurnaz
Turkish Journal of Biology
The neuronal differentiation process has been studied in great detail from many aspects. In the PC12 system, NGF was found to induce neuronal differentiation as measured by neurite extensions and neuronal marker expression. This effect was seen to be mainly conducted through the Ras/MAPK pathway; however, additional pathways are suspected to play a significant role in this cellular response. One such pathway is Smad signaling - NGF was previously reported to induce the expression of the TGF-\beta signal, although the physiological relevance of this was not completely understood. In this study, we analyzed the expression profiles of several TGF-\beta pathway …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Diversity, Murat Kasap
Phylogenetic Analysis Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Diversity, Murat Kasap
Turkish Journal of Biology
The secreted glycoprotein vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent and specific mitogen for vascular endothelial cells, capable of stimulating angiogenesis during embryonic development and tumor formation. Despite intensive research, the functions of several VEGF family members remain a mystery. Insight into their evolutionary relationships could profoundly improve our understanding of why there are so many VEGFs and why we have not been able to dissect their function to our satisfaction. It appears from the presence of several structurally related VEGF proteins that VEGF proteins do have a long divergence history. We investigated the evolution and phylogenetic relationships among …
