We present the results of an experimental study on the formation and propagation of thermohaline intrusions from an initial state that is stably stratified in two diffusing components. The intrusions form in a layer that contains compensating horizontal gradients of the two components and that lies above a denser reservoir layer that is homogeneous. In the initial state, a vertical barrier separates the upper layer into two half layers each with a different concentration but with the same density. Differential diffusion of solute from the reservoir into the upper layer initiates intrusions that are separated by an interface and that …

We develop a new theory relating atmospheric pCO₂ and the efficiency of the soft tissue pump of CO₂ in the ocean, measured by P*, a quasi-conservative tracer. P* is inversely correlated with preformed phosphate, and its global average represents the fraction of nutrients transported by the export and remineralization of organic material. This view is combined with global conservation constraints for carbon and nutrients leading to a theoretical prediction for the sensitivity of atmospheric pCO₂ to changes in globally averaged P*. The wind-driven double-gyre circulation in a rectangular basin goes through several dynamical regimes as the amount of lateral friction is decreased. This paper studies the transition to irregular flow in the double-gyre circulation by applying dynamical systems methodology to a quasi-geostrophic, equivalent-barotropic model with a 10-km resolution.The origin of the irregularities, in space and time, is the occurrence of homoclinic bifurcations that involve phase-space behavior far from stationary solutions. The connection between these homoclinic bifurcations and earlier transitions, which occur at larger lateral friction, is explained. Long-term current measurements of the East Sakhalin Current (ESC) in the Sea of Okhotsk are analyzed using the technique of empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) in the frequency domain. The first and second EOFs at subtidal frequencies represent motions over the continental shelf and slope, respectively, corresponding to the variability of the two cores of the intense ESC. The first EOF can be explained by the first-mode coastal trapped wave (CTW). The structure of the second EOF is similar to that of the second-mode CTW to the first approximation. Invertebrate colonization in a shallow estuarine embayment was studied with the use of artificial substrates (bottle brushes) to create and mimic complex habitats. Substrates were manipulated to obtain varying levels of habitat density and surface area by shortening and/or removing bristles from the brushes. Complexity was quantified as the total surface area of bristles and bristle surface area within the geometric volume of the substrate (i.e., bristle density). Short-bristled brushes provided greater habitat density while long-bristled brushes provided larger surface area within the same removal treatment. Genetic diversity is indispensable to sustain genetic gain in breeding programs. Cultivated sugarcane is a highly heterozygous hybrid derived from crossing two highly heterozygous parents. Sugarcane breeders traditionally rely on pedigree records to select parents. Molecular markers now make it possible to assess genetic diversity at the DNA level. Sixty three sugarcane clones were characterised using Target Region Amplification Polymorphism (TRAP) markers and pedigree relationship (Coefficient of parentage (COP)). The most common primary brain tumor in adults is glioblastoma. These tumors are highly invasive and aggressive with a mean survival time of nine to twelve months from diagnosis to death. Current treatment modalities are unable to significantly prolong survival in patients diagnosed with glioblastoma. As such, glioma is an attractive target for developing novel therapeutic approaches utilizing gene therapy. Equine influenza is a cause of epizootic respiratory disease of the equine. The detection of equine influenza virus using real-time Light Cycler reverse transcription (RT)-PCR technology was evaluated over two influenza seasons with the analysis of 171 samples submitted for viral respiratory disease. Increased sensitivity was found in overall viral detection with this system compared to Directigen Flu A and virus isolation, which were 40% and 23%, respectively, that of the RT-PCR. BACKGROUND: Paralemmin (Palm) is a prenyl-palmitoyl anchored membrane protein that can drive membrane and process formation in neurons. Earlier studies have shown brain preferred Palm expression, although this protein is a major water insoluble protein in chicken lens fiber cells and the Palm gene may be regulated by Pax6. METHODS: The expression profile of Palm protein in the embryonic, newborn and adult mouse eye as well as dissociated retinal neurons was determined by confocal immunofluorescence. Dissolved oxygen dynamics in a shallow stream system were analyzed under dry weather conditions on the Blackstone River in the state of Massachusetts. A dissolved oxygen modeling was conducted with the enhanced stream water quality EPA model QUAL2E by Brown and Barnwell (1987). The dissolved oxygen model was successfully calibrated and validated for dynamical simulations. The accuracy of the model results was proved by graphical and statistical comparison. This research was conducted to survey the assessment and diagnostic practices of school psychologists who assess individuals referred for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Results showed that a substantial number of school psychologists routinely provide ADHD assessments despite concerns about the quality of the psychological instruments available to them or a lack of an agreed-upon gold standard for ADHD assessment. Participants reported that ADHD-related referrals were accurate approximately 65% of the time, and teachers were rated as both the most common and accurate of all referral sources. Dynamics of this population are not well understood, however, and loss terms from advection and starvation may be large.
