Allelic Variation In The Erythropoietin Receptor Gene Is Associated With Uterine Capacity And Litter Size In Swine, J. L. Vallet, B. A. Freking, K. A. Leymaster, R. K. Christenson

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP; C vs. T) that creates an extra GATA-1 site (T allele) in intron 4 of the swine erythropoietin receptor (EPOR) gene was discovered and a genotyping assay for this SNP was developed. A total of 402 gilts from lines selected either at random (control), for ovulation rate (OR) or for uterine capacity (UC) for 11 generations were unilaterally hysterectomized-ovariectomized (UHO) at 160 days of age, mated at approximately 250 days of age and slaughtered at 105 days of pregnancy. Blood samples and spleens were collected from each foetus and the numbers of corpora lutea (CL) …

Different Levels Of Ovine Interferon-T Gene Expressions Are Regulated Through The Short Promoter Region Including Ets-2 Binding Site, Fuko Matsuda-Minehata, Momoko Katsumura, Sho Kijima, Ronald K. Christensen, Kazuhiko Imakawa

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Regulation of interferon-t (IFNt) production, a conceptus secretory protein implicated in the process of maternal recognition of pregnancy, has not been fully elucidated. Among more than 10 ovine IFNt (oIFNt) gene sequences characterized, approximately 75% of oIFNt transcripts expressed in utero is derived from oIFNt-o10 gene and amounts of transcripts from other oIFNt genes such as oIFNt-o8 or oIFNt-o2 are minimal. It was hypothesized that the variation in expression levels exhibited by oIFNt-o10 and oIFNt-o8/-o2 genes was due to differences in the proximal promoter regions of these oIFNt genes. To test this hypothesis, transient transfection experiments with human choriocarcinoma JEG3 …

Perspectives For Artificial Insemination And Genomics To Improve Global Swine Populations, Roger J. Gerrits, Joan K. Lunney, Lawrence A. Johnson, Vernon G. Pursel, Robert R. Kraeling, Gary A. Rohrer, John R. Dobrinsky

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Civilizations throughout the world continue to depend on pig meat as an important food source. Approximately 40% of the red meat consumed annually worldwide (94 million metric tons) is pig meat. Pig numbers (940 million) and consumption have increased consistent with the increasing world population (FAO 2002). In the past 50 years, research guided genetic selection and nutrition programs have had a major impact on improving carcass composition and efficiency of production in swine. The use of artificial insemination (AI) in Europe has also had a major impact on pig improvement in the past 35 years and more recently in …

Post-Harvest Interventions To Reduce/Eliminate Pathogens In Beef, M. Koohmaraie, T. M. Arthur, J. M. Bosilevac, M. Guerini, S. D. Shackelford, T. L. Wheeler Jan 2005

Post-Harvest Interventions To Reduce/Eliminate Pathogens In Beef, M. Koohmaraie, T. M. Arthur, J. M. Bosilevac, M. Guerini, S. D. Shackelford, T. L. Wheeler

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

In 1999 the foodborne pathogens Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter, and Escherichia coli (both O157 and non-O157) were estimated to cause more than 6 million illnesses and approximately 9000 deaths each year. However, the most recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report on the sources and incidence of foodborne disease, released in 2004, has shown a dramatic decrease in E. coli O157:H7 infections. Since raw beef products are the most frequently foodborne sources of these pathogens, the results of this report demonstrate that the microbiological quality of raw beef has improved greatly. During the intervening years, post-harvest interventions have continually …

Setting Fires To Stem Cell Research, Roxanne Greitz Miller Jan 2005

Setting Fires To Stem Cell Research, Roxanne Greitz Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The goal of this lesson is to present the basic scientific knowledge about stem cells, the promise of stem cell research to medicine, and the ethical considerations and arguments involved. One of the challenges of discussing stem cell research is that the field is constantly evolving and the most current information changes almost daily. Few science texts contain stem cell information, and those that do are generally written at a reading level above that of a typical middle grade student. In the lesson, students are introduced to the FIRES strategy and given an opportunity to evaluate stem cell information from …

Pictures In America: It Isn't Just About How Many Words They're Worth, Cameron Granger Jan 2005

Pictures In America: It Isn't Just About How Many Words They're Worth, Cameron Granger

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

The people who produce the visual media (commercials, magazines, billboards, television, and so on) have a gargantuan capacity for affecting our culture because they reach out across all of America. While the media commands a powerful position, we, the individuals, have little-to-no capacity for affecting our culture and are left to be fed only a version of our culture from the spoon that is popular media.

Cameron Granger is a sophomore at JMU majoring in biology. He plays lacrosse on the men's club team and also enjoys skateboarding and surfing. Cameron "loves the self-exploration and discovery of writing and believe[s] …

As Natural As The Birds And The Bees, Ricky Hamberg

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

Theologians and other moralists have said that homosexual acts violate the "natural law” and that they are therefore immoral and ought to be prohibited by the state. The word "nature" has a built-in ambiguity that can lead to serious misunderstandings.

Against The Ubiquity Of Fictional Narrators, Andrew Kania Jan 2005

Against The Ubiquity Of Fictional Narrators, Andrew Kania

Philosophy Faculty Research

In this paper I argue against the theory – popular among theorists of narrative artworks – that we must posit a fictional narrative agent in every narrative artwork in order to explain our imaginative engagement with such works. I accept that every narrative must have a narrator, but I argue that in some central literary cases the narrator is not a fictional agent, but rather the actual author of the work. My criticisms focus on the strongest argument for the ubiquity of fictional narrators, Jerrold Levinson’s ontological-gap argument. Finally, I outline an alternative “minimal theory” of narrators, and some consequences …

A Tutorial On Radiation Oncology And Optimization, Allen G. Holder, Bill Salter Jan 2005

A Tutorial On Radiation Oncology And Optimization, Allen G. Holder, Bill Salter

Mathematics Faculty Research

Designing radiotherapy treatments is a complicated and important task that affects patient care, and modern delivery systems enable a physician more flexibility than can be considered. Consequently, treatment design is increasingly automated by techniques of optimization, and many of the advances in the design process are accomplished by a collaboration among medical physicists, radiation oncologists, and experts in optimization. This tutorial is meant to aid those with a background in optimization in learning about treatment design. Besides discussing several optimization models, we include a clinical perspective so that readers understand the clinical issues that are often ignored in the optimization …

Global Stability Of Periodic Orbits Of Non-Autonomous Difference Equations And Population Biology, Saber Elaydi, Robert J. Sacker Jan 2005

Global Stability Of Periodic Orbits Of Non-Autonomous Difference Equations And Population Biology, Saber Elaydi, Robert J. Sacker

Mathematics Faculty Research

Elaydi and Yakubu showed that a globally asymptotically stable(GAS) periodic orbit in an autonomous difference equation must in fact be a fixed point whenever the phase space is connected. In this paper we extend this result to periodic nonautonomous difference equations via the concept of skew-product dynamical systems. We show that for a k-periodic difference equation, if a periodic orbit of period r is GAS, then r must be a divisor of k. In particular sub-harmonic, or long periodic, oscillations cannot occur. Moreover, if r divides k we construct a non-autonomous dynamical system having minimum period k and …

Social Organization Of The Eastern Rock Elephant-Shrew (Elephantulus Myurus): The Evidence For Mate Guarding, David O. Ribble, M. R. Perrin Jan 2005

Social Organization Of The Eastern Rock Elephant-Shrew (Elephantulus Myurus): The Evidence For Mate Guarding, David O. Ribble, M. R. Perrin

Biology Faculty Research

Understanding the costs and benefits of defending solitary females, or mate guarding, may be the key to understanding the evolution of monogamy in most mammals. Elephant-shrews, or sengis, are a unique clade of small mammals that are particularly attractive for studies of mate guarding. We studied the spatial organization of Eastern Rock Sengis (Elephantulus myurus) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, from August – December 2000. Our objectives were to describe the home ranges of males and females using radiotelemetry, noting the sizes and overlap of adjacent ranges and how the spatial organization changes through time. Males and females were …
