Facts: The appellants are two women who live together in a single-sex relationship. The appellants gave birth to two children and one child respectively, by means of anonymous sperm donations. They are raising the three children jointly. The appellants applied to the Family Court for adoption orders, so that each of the appellants could adopt the other’s children. The applications were dismissed in limine by the Family Court and, on appeal, by the District Court (by majority opinion), on the grounds that the appellants were not competent to adopt under the provisions of the Adoption of Children Law. The appellants …

Insights Into Latent Class Analysis, Margaret S. Pepe, Holly Janes Jan 2005

Insights Into Latent Class Analysis, Margaret S. Pepe, Holly Janes

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Latent class analysis is a popular statistical technique for estimating disease prevalence and test sensitivity and specificity. It is used when a gold standard assessment of disease is not available but results of multiple imperfect tests are. We derive analytic expressions for the parameter estimates in terms of the raw data, under the conditional independence assumption. These expressions indicate explicitly how observed two- and three-way associations between test results are used to infer disease prevalence and test operating characteristics. Although reasonable if the conditional independence model holds, the estimators have no basis when it fails. We therefore caution against using …

Limiting Impervious Surface Cover And Protecting Water Resources Through Better Site Design And Planning, Rockingham Planning Commission

PREP Reports & Publications

The Rockingham Planning Commission (RPC) provided two forms of technical assistance to coastal communities to raise awareness and understanding of how to limit impervious surface cover, mitigate impacts of development, and protect water resources. The first phase of this project involved the organization of a workshop entitled “Improving Site Planning and Site Design for Sustainable Development”, held October 4, 2004 in Durham, New Hampshire. The workshop was offered to local decision makers and municipal employees in the forty two coastal communities and featured speakers from state agencies, local government, and the private sector. For the second phase of this project, the …

Expression Of Hepatocyte Growth Factor And Its Receptor C-Met, Correlates With Severity Of Pathological Injury In Experimental Alcoholic Liver Disease., El-Nasir Lalani, Richard Poulsom, Gordon Stamp, Franz Fogt, Peter Thomas, Amin A. Nanji

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and its receptor, c-met is up-regulated in various forms of liver injury. This study evaluated the relationship between HGF and c-met expression and pathological changes in experimental alcoholic liver disease. Rats (5 per group) were fed ethanol and a diet containing saturated fat corn oil or fish oil by intragastric infusion. Dextrose isocalorically replaced ethanol in controls. In a second set of experiments, Kupffer cells, endothelial cells and hepatocytes were isolated from rats in each group. Pathological evaluation and analysis of HGF and c-met expression were performed in liver and the different cell types. …

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Regulation For Nonessential Experimental Populations Of The Western Distinct Population Segment Of The Gray Wolf Jan 2005

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Regulation For Nonessential Experimental Populations Of The Western Distinct Population Segment Of The Gray Wolf

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) establish a rule for the nonessential experimental populations (NEPs) of the Western Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of the gray wolf (Canis lupus), so that in States and on Tribal reservations with Service-approved wolf management plans, we can better address the concerns of affected landowners and the impacts of a biologically recovered wolf population. In addition, States and Tribes with Service accepted wolf management plans can petition the Service for lead management authority for experimental wolves consistent with this rule. Within the Yellowstone and central Idaho experimental population areas, only the …

Characterization Of Microbial Activity, Mark P. Buttner, Patricia Cruz, Klaus J. Stetzenbach, Abe Van Luik, Thomas Williams, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

The overall goal of this study is to investigate the phenomena that affect the fate and transport of radionuclides in the environment. The objective of this task, “Characterization of Microbial Activity”, is to develop a molecular biological method for the characterization of the microbial population indigenous to the Yucca Mountain Project site, with emphasis in detection and measurement of species or groups of microorganisms that could be involved in actinide and/or metal reduction, and subsurface transport. Subtasks consist of QA planning and preparation, and literature review. This task is part of a cooperative agreement between the UNLV Research Foundation and …

Cluster Analysis Of Genomic Data With Applications In R, Katherine S. Pollard, Mark J. Van Der Laan Jan 2005

Cluster Analysis Of Genomic Data With Applications In R, Katherine S. Pollard, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In this paper, we provide an overview of existing partitioning and hierarchical clustering algorithms in R. We discuss statistical issues and methods in choosing the number of clusters, the choice of clustering algorithm, and the choice of dissimilarity matrix. In particular, we illustrate how the bootstrap can be employed as a statistical method in cluster analysis to establish the reproducibility of the clusters and the overall variability of the followed procedure. We also show how to visualize a clustering result by plotting ordered dissimilarity matrices in R. We present a new R package, hopach, which implements the hybrid clustering method, …

Multiple Testing Procedures And Applications To Genomics, Merrill D. Birkner, Katherine S. Pollard, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sandrine Dudoit

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

This chapter proposes widely applicable resampling-based single-step and stepwise multiple testing procedures (MTP) for controlling a broad class of Type I error rates, in testing problems involving general data generating distributions (with arbitrary dependence structures among variables), null hypotheses, and test statistics (Dudoit and van der Laan, 2005; Dudoit et al., 2004a,b; van der Laan et al., 2004a,b; Pollard and van der Laan, 2004; Pollard et al., 2005). Procedures are provided to control Type I error rates defined as tail probabilities for arbitrary functions of the numbers of Type I errors, V_n, and rejected hypotheses, R_n. These error rates include: …

The Genetics Of Ray Pattern Variation In Caenorhabditis Briggsae, Scott Everet Baird, Cynthia R. Davidson, Justin C. Bohrer Jan 2005

The Genetics Of Ray Pattern Variation In Caenorhabditis Briggsae, Scott Everet Baird, Cynthia R. Davidson, Justin C. Bohrer

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: How does intraspecific variation relate to macroevolutionary change in morphology? This question can be addressed in species in which derived characters are present but not fixed. In rhabditid nematodes, the arrangement of the nine bilateral pairs of peripheral sense organs (rays) in tails of males is often the most highly divergent character between species. The development of ray pattern involves inputs from hometic gene expression patterns, TGFβ signalling, Wnt signalling, and other genetic pathways. In Caenorhabditis briggsae, strain-specific variation in ray pattern has provided an entrée into the evolution of ray pattern. Some strains were fixed for a derived …

Using Ems’S To Improve Compliance On Livestock And Poultry Operations, L. Mark Risse, Richard K. Koelsch, W. L. Bland, Elizabeth A. Bird, Thomas M. Bass

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Across the United States and abroad, innovative producers, processors, trade organizations and others in the agricultural sector are exploring the promise of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) to improve their environmental and business performance. An Environmental Management System or EMS helps farmers develop their own, personal strategies for reducing environmental risk on their operations by integrating environmental management considerations into production management decisions. It is a voluntary, flexible approach and is based on a producer's own sense of how best to manage an operation.

Partnerships for Livestock Environmental Management Systems is a 4-year project to explore the potential of livestock Environmental …
