Standardization Of Photometric Measurement Of Sperm Concentration From Diploid And Tetraploid Pacific Oysters, Crassostrea Gigas (Thunberg), Qiaoxiang Dong, Benoit Eudeline, Changjiang Huang, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

To provide necessary standardization of procedures for cryopreservation of sperm, a spectrophotomeric method was developed to determine the sperm concentration of diploid and tetraploid Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas. Wavelengths of 380, 550, 581 and 780 nm were compared, and 550 and 581 nm were found to be the most sensitive and reliable. A linear relationship between sperm concentration and photometric absorbance was observed for sperm concentrations between 2 × 107 and 2 × 109 cells mL -1. The regression equation for the standard curve at 550 nm for sperm of diploid oysters was Y = - 8.528+1.165 log X. The …

Obtaining Optimal Data Length For Fmri Images, Vikram M. Natarajan Jan 2005

Obtaining Optimal Data Length For Fmri Images, Vikram M. Natarajan

Theses

Interest in brain hemodynamics has led to a substantial increase in state of the art research within the field of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). FMRI enables research to be conducted on brain mapping in healthy individuals, as well as in patient populations. The need for accurate functional images is required. The primary objective was the development of a method to determine the optimal number of time points required to obtain reliable activation maps. The second phase involved the development of a program, which enabled the conversion of functional magnetic resonance images to a format that the neurosurgeon's scanner could …

The Role Of University Participation In Integrated Coastal Zone Management : A Case Study Of The Ria De Aviero, Amie Barbosa Figueiredo

Theses

The purpose of this investigation is to examine the efforts of the Universidade de Aveiro to create a public participation process and provide information for the management of the Ria de Aveiro, a lagoon system, in Portugal. This thesis examines whether universities are effective as coordinators and facilitators of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). The Universidade de Aveiro, through the European Union-ICZM Demonstration Programme, spearheaded two projects, MARIA and ESGIRA-Maria, in efforts towards moving forward with ICZM in the area. A framework was created and then applied through a series of pilot-projects. Examination of the results of these pilot projects …

Electrospinning Of Biphasic Biopolymer And Polymer : A Feasibility And Characterization Study, Sherry Hsiu-Ying Wang Jan 2005

Electrospinning Of Biphasic Biopolymer And Polymer : A Feasibility And Characterization Study, Sherry Hsiu-Ying Wang

Theses

Electrospinning of polymeric materials have been experimented to achieve nanoscaled diameters. The approaches to the current study are to combine a natural material such as collagen with synthetic materials and determine if the interactions between the materials can be used in the electrospinning process. Collagen is a material of choice due to its biocompatibility. When collagen is combined with polymer, Polyethylene Oxide (PEG), the fiber diameters ranged from 150nm to one micron. The fibers produced have shown drastic phase separation. The next study involved using a duel solvent system to electrospin fibers. The polymer of choice is Poly (1-lactic acid) …

2d Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship Modeling Of Methylphenidate Analogues Using Algorithm And Partial Least Square Regression, Noureen Wadhwaniya Jan 2005

2d Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship Modeling Of Methylphenidate Analogues Using Algorithm And Partial Least Square Regression, Noureen Wadhwaniya

Theses

Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) analysis attempts to develop a predictive model of biological activity based on molecular descriptors. 2D QSAR uses descriptors, such as topological indices, that are independent of molecular conformation. A genetic algorithm - partial least squares (GA-PLS) approach was used to identify the molecular descriptors that correlate to the biological activity (binding affinity) of a set of 80 methylphenidate analogues and to construct a predictive model. The GA code was implemented using the fitness function (1-(n-1)(1-q2)/ (n - c)), where n is the number of compounds, c is the optimal number of components, and q …

Attempts To Redefine The Experience Of The Eight Witnesses, Richard Lloyd Anderson Jan 2005

Attempts To Redefine The Experience Of The Eight Witnesses, Richard Lloyd Anderson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Skeptics have misused some historical sources as they attempt to reverse the Eight Witnesses’ statements about their physical contact with the Book of Mormon plates. The Eight Witnesses speak of viewing the plates themselves with unobstructed vision. They left 10 specific statements of handling the plates. This article provides an overview of the statements and experiences of the Eight Witnesses and the arguments of their critics, both then and now. Their unequivocal testimonies resist revisionists’ attempts to portray their experience as mere illusion or deception.

Who's Your Daddy?: Challenging The Application Of The Best Interest Of The Child Standard To Adults And In The Context Of An Intestate Estate, Tyler E. Heffron Jan 2005

Who's Your Daddy?: Challenging The Application Of The Best Interest Of The Child Standard To Adults And In The Context Of An Intestate Estate, Tyler E. Heffron

ExpressO

This article includes a discussion of (1) whether the best interest of the child standard should apply to an adult, (2) whether the best interest of the child standard should apply in the context of an intestate estate, and (3) whether the Kansas Probate Code should defer heirship challenges to the Kansas Parentage Act. The article, following case law from New Mexico and statutes from Georgia, concludes that the best interest of the child standard should not apply to an adult or in the context of an intestate estate. The article proposes an amendment to the Kansas Probate Code.

Amyloid-Β Protofibrils Differ From Amyloid-Β Aggregates Induced In Dilute Hexafluoroisopropanol In Stability And Morphology, Michael Nichols, Melissa Moss, Dana Reed, Stephanie Cratic-Mcdaniel, Jan Hoh, Terrone Rosenberry Jan 2005

Amyloid-Β Protofibrils Differ From Amyloid-Β Aggregates Induced In Dilute Hexafluoroisopropanol In Stability And Morphology, Michael Nichols, Melissa Moss, Dana Reed, Stephanie Cratic-Mcdaniel, Jan Hoh, Terrone Rosenberry

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The brains of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients contain large numbers of amyloid plaques that are rich in fibrils composed of 40- and 42-residue amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides. Several lines of evidence indicate that fibrillar Aβ and especially soluble Aβ aggregates are important in the etiology of AD. Recent reports also stress that amyloid aggregates are polymorphic and that a single polypeptide can fold into multiple amyloid conformations. Here we demonstrate that Aβ-(1–40) can form soluble aggregates with predominant β-structures that differ in stability and morphology. One class of aggregates involved soluble Aβ protofibrils, prepared by vigorous overnight agitation of monomeric Aβ-(1–40) …
