Fabrication Of Hollow Waveguides With Sacrificial Aluminum Cores, John P. Barber, Donald B. Conkey, Jeffrey Ryan Lee, Neal B. Hubbard, Larry L. Howell, Aaron R. Hawkins, Gongliang Yin, Holger Schmidt

Faculty Publications

We have developed a process to fabricate dielectric waveguide structures with long hollow cores formed by etching a sacrificial core material. The process is compatible with other planar silicon fabrication techniques. Using aluminum as the sacrificial material, we have investigated fabrication limits and design parameters that determine mechanical integrity of the waveguides. Internal pressure due to the production of gaseous compounds during the core removal process was identified as the yield-limiting factor. A mechanical model based on finite element analysis and confirmed by experiment, predicts ultimate pressures sustainable by these structures. Waveguides less than 10 m wide with 2- m-thick …

Fast And Robust Incremental Action Prediction For Interactive Agents, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura Feb 2005

Fast And Robust Incremental Action Prediction For Interactive Agents, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

The ability for a given agent to adapt on-line to better interact with another agent is a difficult and important problem. This problem becomes even more difficult when the agent to interact with is a human, since humans learn quickly and behave non-deterministically. In this paper we present a novel method whereby an agent can incrementally learn to predict the actions of another agent (even a human), and thereby can learn to better interact with that agent. We take a case-based approach, where the behavior of the other agent is learned in the form of state-action pairs. We generalize these …

The Long Reach Of Divorce: Divorce And Child Well-Being Across Three Generations, Paul R. Amato, Jacob Cheadle Feb 2005

The Long Reach Of Divorce: Divorce And Child Well-Being Across Three Generations, Paul R. Amato, Jacob Cheadle

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

We used data from the study of Marital Instability Over the Life Course to examine links between divorce in the grandparent generation and outcomes in the grandchild generation (N = 691). Divorce in the first generation (G1) was associated with lower education, more marital discord, weaker ties with mothers, and weaker ties with fathers in the third generation (G3). These associations were mediated by family characteristics in the middle generation (G2), including lower education, more marital discord, more divorce, and greater tension in early parent- child relationships. In supplementary analyses, we found no evidence that the estimated effects of divorce …

Child Neglect And Adolescent Violence: Examining The Effects Of Self-Control And Peer Rejection, Constance L. Chapple, Kimberly A. Tyler, Bianca E. Bersani Feb 2005

Child Neglect And Adolescent Violence: Examining The Effects Of Self-Control And Peer Rejection, Constance L. Chapple, Kimberly A. Tyler, Bianca E. Bersani

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Child maltreatment researchers have often suggested that experiences with child neglect have long-term, negative effects. Child neglect is thought to have particularly adverse effects on self-control, peer relations, and delinquency. In this research, we examine the relationship of child neglect with adolescent violence via self-control and peer rejection. Using prospective, longitudinal data from a community sample, we find that child neglect adversely affects peer rejection and violence. Neglected children were more likely to be rejected by their peers in early adolescence and were more likely to be violent later in adolescence. Contrary to theoretical predictions, child neglect was not a …

Automatic Classification And Speaker Identification Of African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Vocalizations, Patrick J. Clemins, Michael T. Johnson, Kirsten Leong, Anne Savage

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A hidden Markov model (HMM) system is presented for automatically classifying African elephant vocalizations. The development of the system is motivated by successful models from human speech analysis and recognition. Classification features include frequency-shifted Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and log energy, spectrally motivated features which are commonly used in human speech processing. Experiments, including vocalization type classification and speaker identification, are performed on vocalizations collected from captive elephants in a naturalistic environment. The system classified vocalizations with accuracies of 94.3% and 82.5% for type classification and speaker identification classification experiments, respectively. Classification accuracy, statistical significance tests on the model parameters, …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Protein kinase CK1, also known as casein kinase 1, participates in the phosphorylation of β-catenin, which regulates the functioning of the Wnt signaling cascade involved in embryogenesis and carcinogenesis. β-catenin phosphorylation occurs in a multiprotein complex assembled on the scaffold protein axin. The interaction of CK1α from Dani rerio with mouse-axin has been studied using a pull-down assay that uses fragments of axin fused to glutathione S transferase, which is bound to glutathione sepharose beads. The results indicate that the three lysines present in the basic region of residues 228-231 of CK1α are necessary for the binding of CK1 to …

The Feasibility Of Micromachined Dynamic Resonant Beam Coriolis True Mass Flow Meter, Sang Hwui Lee Jan 2005

The Feasibility Of Micromachined Dynamic Resonant Beam Coriolis True Mass Flow Meter, Sang Hwui Lee

Dissertations

The technological advances of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) in the past two decades have been remarkable for innovations in microfluidic systems as well as automotive applications such as pressure sensors and accelerometers. MEMS flow sensing has emerged as a field of interest in microfluidics, with a variety of sensing methods being miniaturized, such as thermal anemometry, ultrasonic sensing and flow measurement based on the Coriolis effect. Coriolis sensing is particularly attractive since, unlike most other methods which provide volumetric flow information, Coriolis sensing is capable of providing a direct, true mass flow measurement. Because of this advantage, Coriolis flow sensing has …

Development And Application Of Fractionation Procedure For Drinking Water Organic Matters, Yong Pu Jan 2005

Development And Application Of Fractionation Procedure For Drinking Water Organic Matters, Yong Pu

Dissertations

USEPA mandates a control of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in finished drinking water and recommends reduction of natural organic matters (NOM), DBP precursors, to achieve this regulatory goal. Studies relating NOM with DBP include fractionation of water samples, characterization of collected organic fractions, fractions' formation potential tests, and jar or similar tests to remove NOM. This study discussed a current resin fractionation procedure on principle, procedure, and its efficiency when applied to water samples of low NOM (< 5mgIL). The primary objective of this research is to develop a fractionation procedure intended for water of low NOM by carefully applying mass balance concept through each fraction's fractionation and a selection of stable ion exchange resins. A new protocol was presented with triple columns of XAD-8 adsorption resin, one column of AG-MP-50 cationic resin, and another column of WA 10 weak anionic resin in sequence. This protocol was experimented and confirmed for its efficiency (±10% loss of mass) with samples from Canal Road (CR) and Raritan Millstone (RM) surface water treatment plants (WTPs) in central New Jersey. The second objective of this study is to develop a statistical model with a potential of online delineation of organic fractions of NOM. The resulting model based on samples of Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) WTP in northern New Jersey was applied to predict organic fractions of samples from CR and RM plants. Paired T-test (paired t ratio 1.15 < t critical 2.02) indicated a good correlation between the predicted and actual fraction concentration. Finally, samples of Middlesex Water Company (MWC) were fractionated and Trihalomethane formation potential tests (THMFP) on collected fraction showed hydrophilic matters possessed a higher potential to produce TTHM in finished water than hydrophobic matter. Jar tests indicated while coagulation was effective in removing hydrophobic matter, it may not be optimum for removal of hydrophilic matter.

This study developed an accurate fractionation procedure for low NOM waters. It provided a better understanding of organic matter transformation at different treatment …

Pattern Discovery In Structural Databases With Applications To Bioinformatics, Sen Zhang Jan 2005

Pattern Discovery In Structural Databases With Applications To Bioinformatics, Sen Zhang

Dissertations

Frequent structure mining (FSM) aims to discover and extract patterns frequently occurring in structural data such as trees and graphs. FSM finds many applications in bioinformatics, XML processing, Web log analysis, and so on. In this thesis, two new FSM techniques are proposed for finding patterns in unordered labeled trees. Such trees can be used to model evolutionary histories of different species, among others.

The first FSM technique finds cousin pairs in the trees. A cousin pair is a pair of nodes sharing the same parent, the same grandparent, or the same great-grandparent, etc. Given a tree T, our …

Tide-Influenced Contaminant Transport In Coastal Aquifers, Yong Peng Jan 2005

Tide-Influenced Contaminant Transport In Coastal Aquifers, Yong Peng

Dissertations

Coastal aquifers are distinguished from other aquifers because of tidal effects which cause complicated groundwater flow and contaminant transport phenomena in regions immediately adjacent to the coast. This study is designed to address the significance of tidal influence on contaminant transport by focusing on one-dimensional homogeneous coastal aquifers.

This study formulates a conceptual model and corresponding flow and transport equations, analyzes coastal boundary conditions, solves numerically the transport equation, and uses experiments to verify the numerical results.

Results of numerical and experimental studies conclude that tides can have a significant impact on contaminant transport, especially when under unconfined conditions, subject …

The Testing Of Semiconductor-Based Adsorption Modified Photosensitive Sensors For Their Response To A Volatile Organic Compound, Oxygen, Humidity, And Heating, Roberta Rosty Jan 2005

The Testing Of Semiconductor-Based Adsorption Modified Photosensitive Sensors For Their Response To A Volatile Organic Compound, Oxygen, Humidity, And Heating, Roberta Rosty

Dissertations

Two thin-film sensors, composed of different thicknesses (approximately 0.5 microns and 4.5 microns) of a cadmium sulfide layer coated with Rhodamine B fluorescent dye on a glass substrate, were tested for change in photoconductivity due to exposure to different concentrations of gaseous organic molecules in the parts-per-million (ppm) range.

It was theorized that the gaseous organic molecules would adsorb to the dyed semiconductor surface and that some energy would be transferred to the adsorbed analyte rather than to the cadmium sulfide semiconductor layer through the dye, thereby decreasing the photoconductivity of the surface in an amount proportional to the analyte …

Ancient Voyages Across The Ocean To America: From “Impossible” To “Certain”, John L. Sorenson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

In the past, experts have assumed that primitive sailors would have found it impossible to cross the oceans between the Old World and the New. However, John Sorenson here concludes that the evidence for transoceanic contacts now drowns out the arguments of those who have seen the New World as an isolated island until ad 1492. Sorenson’s arguments are based on evidences from Europe, Asia, and Polynesia of the diffusion of New World plants and infectious organisms. His research identifies evidence for transoceanic exchanges of 98 plant species, including tobacco and peanuts. The presence of hookworm in both the Americas …
