Ca2+ regulates a spectrum of cellular processes including many aspects of neuronal function. Ca2+-sensitive events such as neurite extension and axonal guidance are driven by Ca2+ signals that are precisely organized in both time and space. These complex cues result from both Ca2+ influx across the plasma membrane and the mobilization of intracellular Ca2+ stores. In the present study, using rat cortical neurons, we have examined the effects of the novel intracellular Ca 2+-mobilizing messenger nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP) on neurite length and cytosolic Ca2+ levels. We show that NAADP potentiates neurite extension in response to serum and …

Influence Of The Number Of Repellent-Treated And Untreated Food Or Water Containers On Intake By The European Starling, Arla G. Hile, Michael G. Tordoff Feb 2005

Influence Of The Number Of Repellent-Treated And Untreated Food Or Water Containers On Intake By The European Starling, Arla G. Hile, Michael G. Tordoff

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The availability of multiple sources of food and drink has a profound influence on choice behavior in rodents. It is not known how other taxa might respond to the same kind of variation in availability. We tested European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) with various combinations of unadulterated and repellent-treated (0.025% citronellyl acetate) resources. In Experiment 1, birds drank more plain than repellent-treated water than when given (a) 2 bottles of plain water and 2 of repellent-water, or (b) 3 bottles of plain water and 1 of repellent-water. However, they drank more repellent than water when given 3 bottles of repellent-water and …

This edition of the Wooster Voice was published on February 18 of 2005, and it is eight pages long. A new academic policy has been approved by the Educational Policy Committee to raise the minimum grade point average requirement for a student to be in good academic standing. Shane Windmeyer gave a lecture on Tuesday on, "Out and Greek: Being an Ally to a Brother or Sister." Sophomore David J. Kozak passed away at his home on February 10. The letters to the editor on page three are dedicated to David J. Kozak. Erik Shilling's article on page four reflects …

Selective Rescue Of Selenoprotein Expression In Mice Lacking A Highly Specialized Methyl Group In Selenocysteine Trna, Bradley A. Carlson, Xue-Ming Xu, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield Feb 2005

Selective Rescue Of Selenoprotein Expression In Mice Lacking A Highly Specialized Methyl Group In Selenocysteine Trna, Bradley A. Carlson, Xue-Ming Xu, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenocysteine (Sec) is the 21st amino acid in the genetic code. Its tRNA is variably methylated on the 2’-Ohydroxyl site of the ribosyl moiety at position 34 (Um34). Herein, we identified a role of Um34 in regulating the expression of some, but not all, selenoproteins. A strain of knock-out transgenic mice was generated, wherein the Sec tRNA gene was replaced with either wild type or mutant Sec tRNA transgenes. The mutant transgene yielded a tRNA that lacked two base modifications, N6- isopentenyladenosine at position 37 (i6A37) and Um34. Several selenoproteins, including glutathione peroxidases 1 and 3, …

Using The Veil Of Ignorance To Ensure Distributive Justice In Class Actions: A Rawlsian Approach To 'Adequacy Of Representation' After Stephenson, David A. Dana Feb 2005

Using The Veil Of Ignorance To Ensure Distributive Justice In Class Actions: A Rawlsian Approach To 'Adequacy Of Representation' After Stephenson, David A. Dana

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

This Article's normative claim - that a rule allowing subsequent challenges to class action settlements is compelled by our basic intuitions of fairness and justice when class members could not conceivably have agreed to the arrangement had they been present but not known their precise position in the class - builds on the Rawlsian construct of fairness as the product of (hypothetical) decision-making in an "original position," behind a "veil of ignorance," and the economics of human decision-making under conditions of uncertainty. This approach suggests that certain types of settlements in both high-individual-stakes/toxic torts/personal injury class actions and small-individual-stakes/consumer fraud …

A Macroscopic Kinetic Model For Dna Polymerase Elongation And High-Fidelity Nucleotide Election, Steve Viljoen, Mark A. Griep, Michael Nelson, Hendrik J. Viljoen Feb 2005

A Macroscopic Kinetic Model For Dna Polymerase Elongation And High-Fidelity Nucleotide Election, Steve Viljoen, Mark A. Griep, Michael Nelson, Hendrik J. Viljoen

Papers in Enzyme Kinetics

The enzymatically catalyzed template-directed extension of ssDNA/primer complex is an impor-tant reaction of extraordinary complexity. The DNA polymerase does not merely facilitate the insertion of dNMP, but it also performs rapid screening of substrates to ensure a high degree of fidelity. Several kinetic studies have determined rate constants and equilibrium constants for the elementary steps that make up the overall pathway. The information is used to develop a macro-scopic kinetic model, using an approach described by Ninio [Ninio J., 1987. Alternative to the steady-state method: derivation of reaction rates from first-passage times and pathway probabili-ties. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. …

Disclosure Of Clinical Trial Data: Why Exemption 4 Of The Freedom Of Information Act Should Be Restored, Janene Boyce

Duke Law & Technology Review

Clinical trial data generated during the FDA drug approval process can be very valuable. While patients and doctors desperately need this information to make informed choices about medical treatment, drug sponsors strive to keep this resource secret to ensure their ability to profit from their own research. In the wake of the controversy over antidepressant use in children, both the public and Congress have called for the disclosure of all clinical trial data. However, rather than taking an all-or-nothing approach that could harm the development of new drugs, this iBrief argues that Congress should address the issue of trial data …

Implicit Indicators For Interesting Web Pages, Hyoung-Rae Kim, Philip K. Chan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A user's interest in a web page can be estimated by unobtrusively (implicitly) observing his or her behaviour rather than asking for feedback directly (explicitly). Implicit methods are naturally less accurate than explicit methods, but they do not waste a user's time or effort. Implicit indicators of a user's interests can also be used to create models that change with a user's interests over time. Research has shown that a user's behavior is related to his/her interest in a web page. We evaluate previously studied implicit indicators and examine the time spent on a page in more detail. For example, …

Apparent Soil Electrical Conductivity: Applications For Designing And Evaluating Field-Scale Experiments, C. K. Johnson, Kent M. Eskridge, D. L. Corwin Feb 2005

Apparent Soil Electrical Conductivity: Applications For Designing And Evaluating Field-Scale Experiments, C. K. Johnson, Kent M. Eskridge, D. L. Corwin

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

On-farm field-scale research has become increasingly common with the advent of new technologies. While promoting a realistic systems perspective, field-scale experiments do not lend themselves to the traditional design concepts of replication and blocking. Previously, a farm-scale dryland experiment in northeastern Colorado was conducted to evaluate apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) classification (within-field blocking) as a basis for estimating plot-scale experimental error. Comparison of meansquare (MS) errors for several soil properties and surface residue mass measured at this site, with those from a nearby plot-scale experiment, revealed that ECa-classified within-field variance approximates plot-scale experimental error. In the …
