Background: The health information needs of developing countries increasingly include population-based estimates determined by biological and physiological measures. Collection of data on these biomarkers requires careful reassessment of ethical standards and procedures related to issues of safety, informed consent, reporting, and referral policies. This paper reviews the survey practices of health examination surveys that have been conducted in developed nations and discusses their application to similar types of surveys proposed for developing countries.DISCUSSION: The paper contends that a unitary set of ethical principles should be followed for surveys around the world that precludes the danger of creating double standards (and …

Electrochemical Controllable Preparation Of Hydroxyapatite Coating With Different Morphologies And Preliminary In Vitro Tests, Hai-Yan Shi, Ren Hu, Chang-Jian Lin

The Controllable electrochemical deposition has been developed to prepare the hydroxyapatite(HA) coatings on Ti substrate with different morphologies and structures. Three kinds of typical topography of HA coatings, i.e. standing-up, flower and ordered porous structures have been obtained. The XRD and FTIR results demonstrate high crystallinity of the coating and exclusion of other forms of calcium phosphates. In vitro tests reveal that the biological property is largely dependent on the structure and morphology of the HA coating. It has been found that all pure HA coating show good biocompatibilities, while only the HA coating with ordered porous structures exhibits best …

As the Semantic Web gains importance for sharing knowledge on the Internet this has lead to the development and publishing of many ontologies in different domains. When trying to reuse existing ontologies into their applications, users are faced with the problem of determining if an ontology is suitable for their needs. In this paper, we introduce OntoQA, an approach that analyzes ontology schemas and their populations (i.e. knowledgebases) and describes them through a well defined set of metrics. The neuronal nitric-oxide synthase (nNOS) flavoprotein domain (nNOSr) contains regulatory elements that repress its electron flux in the absence of bound calmodulin (CaM). The repression also requires bound NADP(H), but the mechanism is unclear. The crystal structure of a CaM-free nNOSr revealed an ionic interaction between Arg1400 in the C-terminal tail regulatory element and the 2′-phosphate group of bound NADP(H). We tested the role of this interaction by substituting Ser and Glu for Arg1400 in nNOSr and in the full-length nNOS enzyme. The CaM-free nNOSr mutants had cytochrome c reductase activities that were less repressed than in wild-type, and this …

Lipoxygenases (LOXs) catalyze the regio- and stereospecific dioxygenation of polyunsaturated membrane-embedded fatty acids. We report here the 3.2 Å resolution structure of 8R-LOX from the Caribbean sea whip coral Plexaura homomalla, a LOX isozyme with calcium dependence and the uncommon R chiral stereospecificity. Structural and spectroscopic analyses demonstrated calcium binding in a C2-like membrane-binding domain, illuminating the function of similar amino acids in calcium-activated mammalian 5-LOX, the key enzyme in the pathway to the pro-inflammatory leukotrienes. Mutation of Ca2+- ligating amino acids in 8R-LOX resulted not only in a diminished capacity to bind membranes, as monitored by fluorescence resonance energy …

Zooplankton communities in the Krenceng Reservoair, Cilegon, Banten. This research was carried out to know the structure of zooplankton communities and relations between the phytoplankton and zooplankton in the Krenceng Reservoair, Cilegon. The zooplankton abundance with used Sedwigck Rafter Counting Method, diversity and evenness were counted. Relations between zooplankton and the environmental factors as well as its relations to phytoplankton calculated with regression. The results showed that are 13 species of the zooplankton found which including in three classes with the highest abundance on Novembers 2002 and March 2003 of the Rotifera. Study on Pb Content in 3 Week and 6 Week Old Kangkung (Ipomoea reptans Poir) Planted in Pb containing Media. A study on the content of Pb in kangkung has been conducted. Land kangkung (Ipomoea reptans) was used as the sample, and was planted in hydrophonic media, and watered with Multigrow Complete Plant Food (2000 mg/L) and Pb solution (2 mg/L) twice a day. Triterpenoids from n-hexane extract of Garcinia picrorrhiza Miq. stem bark. Chromatographic separation of n-hexane extract of dried Garcinia picrorrhiza Miq. stem bark (Cluciaceae) furnished two triterpenoids, identified as 3oxo-7,24-euphadien-26oic acid (1), 3β-hydroxy-7,24-euphadien-26 oic acid (2). The structure of compounds were determined by using UV-vis, FT-IR, 1D and 2D NMR techniques.

Notes on the Echinoderm Fauna of the Tanjung Merah Bay Waters Sulawesi Utara. A total of 21 species of echinoderms, belonging to of 5 species holothuroidea, 5 species of asteroidea, 4 species echinoidea and 7 species ophiuroidea have been found in the Tanjung Merah of Sulawesi Utara. The Ophiuroidea were relatively common in the sea grass zone. On the basis of population density, Ophiuroidea was the dominant group and relatively highest in the individual density. The species composition, community structure, zonation, and spatial distribution of echinoderm fauna are discussed in this paper

Background:

Protein tyrosine kinases are important enzymes for cell signalling and key targets for anticancer drug discovery. The catalytic mechanisms of protein tyrosine kinase-catalysed phosphorylation are not fully understood. Protein tyrosine kinase Csk requires two Mg²⁺ cations for activity: one (M1) binds to ATP, and the other (M2) acts as an essential activator.

Results:

Experiments in this communication characterize the interaction between M2 and Csk. Csk activity is sensitive to pH in the range of 6 to 7. Kinetic characterization indicates that the sensitivity is not due to altered substrate binding, but caused by the sensitivity of M2 binding …

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a staple grain for the indigenous people of the Andean region of South America with excellent nutritional qualities, including protein content.
