Fantastic Visions: On The Necessity Of Feminist Utopian Narrative, Tracie Anne Welser Apr 2005

Fantastic Visions: On The Necessity Of Feminist Utopian Narrative, Tracie Anne Welser

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Works of feminist utopian literature project longing for and predict political change while confronting current social inequities. Often, they effectively interrogate Western models of citizenship and the institutions which reify them, suggesting alternate models. Here, I define Western citizenship as determined by the maintenance of the nation-state through gendered social roles that restrict women to the private sphere and men to the public. This thesis asserts that feminist utopian literature, like politically conscious music, art, and other forms of feminist praxis, is a politically necessary component of feminist consciousness because it facilitates much-needed visions of a more equitable future for …

Maternal Age, Paternal Age And Effective Fecundability In Rural Bangladesh, Ek Brunson, Dj Holman, D. B. Neill Apr 2005

Maternal Age, Paternal Age And Effective Fecundability In Rural Bangladesh, Ek Brunson, Dj Holman, D. B. Neill

Social Sciences

Effective fecundability is defined as the monthly probability for a conception that leads to a livebirth. One method of assessing effective fecundability is by examining lengths of first birth intervals. Using demographic records of marriage and birth, we examine the effects of maternal age, paternal age, mother’s education, and religion on effective fecundability in a rural region of Bangladesh. Data came from a prospective demographic and health survey conducted in Matlab thana by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. Marriage and birth records from 1975 to 1982 were used to generate first birth intervals. A parametric hazards model …

Effects Of Grandmother's Presence And Work Effort On Fertility, Survivorship, And Weight In Two Ethnic Groups In N.E. India, D. L. Leonetti, D. C. Nath, N. S. Hemam, D. B. Neill Apr 2005

Effects Of Grandmother's Presence And Work Effort On Fertility, Survivorship, And Weight In Two Ethnic Groups In N.E. India, D. L. Leonetti, D. C. Nath, N. S. Hemam, D. B. Neill

Social Sciences

Hypotheses regarding the selection for extension of post-menopausal life in humans depend on showing that reproductive success is enhanced via positive effects of older persons on the fertility and offspring viability of descendants. We investigate grandmother effects in 617 patrilineal Bengali and 772 matrilineal Khasi households in N.E. India. Direct access to resources varies. Bengali women do no field labor nor do they market or own property. Khasi women own property and are productive workers in the fields and in wage labor and manage the household resources via selling and buying in the markets. The current living status and the …

Progress Of African Americans In Higher Education Attainment: The Widening Gender Gap And Its Current And Future Implications, Amadu J. Kaba Apr 2005

Progress Of African Americans In Higher Education Attainment: The Widening Gender Gap And Its Current And Future Implications, Amadu J. Kaba

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This research argues that despite all of the obstacles that African Americans have confronted in the history of the United States, they have made substantial progress in higher education attainment from the 1970s to the beginning of the 21st century. It reveals that the rise in attainment of college and university degrees has resulted in a substantial increase in living standards and that African Americans are making important economic, social and political contributions to the United States. I present several reasons why black males are not performing as well as black females in higher education attainment. Analyses are also presented …

Proopiomelanocortin Neurons In Nucleus Tractus Solitarius Are Activated By Visceral Afferents: Regulation By Cholecystokinin And Opioids, Suzanne M. Appleyard, Timothy W. Bailey, Mark W. Doyle, Young-Ho Jin, James L. Smart, Malcolm J. Low, Michael C. Andresen Apr 2005

Proopiomelanocortin Neurons In Nucleus Tractus Solitarius Are Activated By Visceral Afferents: Regulation By Cholecystokinin And Opioids, Suzanne M. Appleyard, Timothy W. Bailey, Mark W. Doyle, Young-Ho Jin, James L. Smart, Malcolm J. Low, Michael C. Andresen

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

The nucleustractus solitarius (NTS) receives dense terminations from cranial visceral afferents, including those from the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Although the NTS integrates peripheral satiety signals and relays this signal to central feeding centers, little is known about which NTS neurons are involved or what mechanisms are responsible. Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons are good candidates for GI integration, because disruption of the POMC gene leads to severe obesity and hyperphagia. Here, we used POMC– enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) transgenic mice to identify NTS POMC neurons. Intraperitoneal administration of cholecystokinin (CCK) induced c-fos gene expression in NTS POMC–EGFP neurons, suggesting that they …

Learning Computer Programs With The Bayesian Optimization Algorithm, Moshe Looks, R. P. Loui Apr 2005

Learning Computer Programs With The Bayesian Optimization Algorithm, Moshe Looks, R. P. Loui

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The hierarchical Bayesian Optimization Algorithm (hBOA) [24, 25] learns bit-strings by constructing explicit centralized models of a population and using them to generate new instances. This thesis is concerned with extending hBOA to learning open-ended program trees. The new system, BOA programming (BOAP), improves on previous probabilistic model building GP systems (PMBGPs) in terms of the expressiveness and open-ended flexibility of the models learned, and hence control over the distribution of individuals generated. BOAP is studied empirically on a toy problem (learning linear functions) in various configurations, and further experimental results are presented for two real-world problems: prediction of sunspot …

Microsomal Prostaglandin E Synthase-1: The Inducible Synthase For Prostaglandin E2, Annaleise V. Sampey, Seetha Monrad, Leslie J. Crofford Apr 2005

Microsomal Prostaglandin E Synthase-1: The Inducible Synthase For Prostaglandin E2, Annaleise V. Sampey, Seetha Monrad, Leslie J. Crofford

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) is an inducible enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of prostaglandin (PG)H2 to PGE2. Proinflammatory stimuli markedly increase levels of mPGES-1 expression both in vivo and in vitro. mPGES-1 knockout studies and animal models of inflammatory arthritis also provide a strong basis for the contribution of mPGES-1 in the increased local production of PGE2 observed in inflammatory arthritis. The focus of this article is to review some recent advances in our understanding of mechanisms specific to the regulation of inducible mPGES-1 in inflammatory arthritis.
