Relieved, Angela Cuyugan

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Emotionally drained, feeling insincere...

Crying tears in vain, wishing you were here.

Just not feelin’ the vibe of today, my head’s poundin’

Getting’ sick of givin’ sides in this game, I dread countin’

...The time tickin’ away, in my insomniac world.

One Night In Mexico, Alaina Siminovsky Apr 2005

One Night In Mexico, Alaina Siminovsky

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Suspense is uniquely utilized in this short story. You may think one this is occurring, but the opposite may too be in the works. A man and a woman are both in Mexico for Halloween. Festivities surround them as he slowly moves toward where she is, plotting in his mind. She waits, unknowing what is about to unfold. What is? Don’t be fooled by the unconventional use of words.

Perpetuating Pre-Feminist Ideals, Alaina Siminovsky Apr 2005

Perpetuating Pre-Feminist Ideals, Alaina Siminovsky

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Society escapes the drudge of everyday through film. Young girls often attempt to emulate what they see on the big screen. Everyday films that are geared toward the younger female audience often champion pre-feminist ideals. Even films that are meant to empower women do so only by reaffirming a stereotypical feminine character or by allowing them to achieve something in the context of winning acceptance from a man, typically a father figure. This sort of story line reinforces the necessity of male acceptance and entirely disregards feminism. With the plethora of films being released on this subject, the writer sought …

Introspective Narcissist, Alaina Siminovsky

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Through the heavy use of descriptions this story traces the internal conflict of a concerned protagonist. Self-discovery and realization are themes throughout. Attempted withdrawal from society and the creation of a self pariah based on sever disillusionment strike the antagonist and the protagonist expressed concern. Resolution occurs in an unexpected fashion at the story’s close.

Depth Of A Darkened Soul, Earl Tinsley Apr 2005

Depth Of A Darkened Soul, Earl Tinsley

Undergraduate Student Symposium

This poetic piece describes the feelings and actions associated with one of the most challenging emotions in any human beings’ life - loneliness. This selection goes into great detail about the epicenter of the author’s loneliness and how it takes the joy out of commitments that are otherwise maintained to occupy time not spent wallowing in their own self despair. It also explains how this feeling of loneliness takes over your overall demeanor, distorting your eyes, your voice, your mind and your very soul. Like the selection reads, “Loneliness is a reality that grows and increases with age.” In fact, …

The Role Of Checkpoint Kinase 1 In Sensitivity To Topoisomerase I Poisons, Karen Flatten, Nga T. Dai, Benjamin T. Vroman, David Loegering, Charles Erlichman, Larry M. Karnitz, Scott H. Kaufmann

ETSU Faculty Works

Agents that target topoisomerase I are widely utilized to treat human cancer. Previous studies have indicated that both the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM)/ checkpoint kinase (Chk) 2 and ATM- and Rad 3-related (ATR)/Chk1 checkpoint pathways are activated after treatment with these agents. The relative contributions of these two pathways to survival of cells after treatment with topoisomerase I poisons are currently unknown. To address this issue, we assessed the roles of ATR, Chk1, ATM, and Chk2 in cells treated with the topoisomerase I poisons camptothecin and 7-ethyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (SN-38), the active metabolite of irinotecan. Colony forming assays demonstrated that down-regulation of …

Biomechanical Evaluation Of Injury Severity Associated With Patient Falls From Bed, Bonnie E. Bowers Apr 2005

Biomechanical Evaluation Of Injury Severity Associated With Patient Falls From Bed, Bonnie E. Bowers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The incidence of falls in the elderly population is a growing concern in the healthcare industry as associated morbidity is high, particularly morbidity associated with falls from bed. Bedrails were implemented as a device intended to reduce the incidence of falls from bed; however, recent evidence may indicate that bedrails contribute to adverse events including entrapment and entanglement. As such, efforts have been made to reduce the use of bedrails and implement alternatives including height adjustable beds and floor mats. An instrumented anthropomorphic test dummy was used in the current study to measure the deceleration profiles of the head, thorax, …

Experience And Inquiry In John Dewey’S Contextualism, Christopher C. Kirby Apr 2005

Experience And Inquiry In John Dewey’S Contextualism, Christopher C. Kirby

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper will focus on two elements, viz. experience and inquiry, which are central to John Deweys philosophy and their relation to the movement known as pragmatism. Although each of these concepts has received extensive treatment by other schools of thought, the pragmatists, and particularly Dewey, did much to redefine each in hopes of alleviating the tension between conflicting philosophical viewpoints. An explication of Deweys view on experience is the first step in understanding his application of the pragmatic method towards reconstructing philosophical thinking. Therefore, this paper will explore the meaning that Dewey gave to each and how that meaning …

“They Say That This Clinic Is For Migrants”: Cultural Sensitivity In A Rural Health Center, Nadine I. Ohlinger Apr 2005

“They Say That This Clinic Is For Migrants”: Cultural Sensitivity In A Rural Health Center, Nadine I. Ohlinger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The growing number of minority populations living in the United States makes it mandatory that all health care organizations seek to be culturally sensitive. There is no consensus on the definition of the term cultural sensitivity. The goal of this thesis is to define what cultural sensitivity means in a rural health center, from the perspective of the staff as well as the Hispanic patient. Anthropological methods, such as participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and archival data analysis, show that the qualities that Hispanic patients value in a clinic are 1) attention, 2) availability of Spanish language, 3) financial assistance, 4) …

Association Between Area Socioeconomic Status And Hospital Admissions For Childhood And Adult Asthma, Tomas Tamulis Apr 2005

Association Between Area Socioeconomic Status And Hospital Admissions For Childhood And Adult Asthma, Tomas Tamulis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite an improved understanding of the disease, the prevalence of asthma and asthma-related morbidity continue to rise, particularly among minority and inner-city populations. Despite the growing epidemic of asthma, the surveillance of disease at the state or even local levels is very limited. Such information is very important to identify high-risk population groups and to design more effective community-based preventive interventions or risk management programs that may modify these trends.

The study provided important information about spatial differences by the geographical area of residence and changes in asthma hospital admissions over time in the selected area. Environmental exposure to ambient …

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population Winter 2005, James A. Dubovsky

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Observers counted 5,361 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during February 2005, an increase of 17% from the 4,584 counted in February 2004 and the second consecutive record-high count for the Mid-winter Survey. The numbers of white birds (4,206) and cygnets (1,155) increased 10% and 53%, respectively, from counts last year. In the tri-state area, increases in total swans occurred in Idaho (+20%) and Wyoming (+25%), but decreased slightly in Montana (-7%). The number of birds wintering in areas near restoration flocks was higher than counts in recent years, largely due to more …
