Nonrandom Dispersal And Local Adaptation, Jay F. Storz May 2005

Nonrandom Dispersal And Local Adaptation, Jay F. Storz

Jay F. Storz Publications

Two recent studies of wild bird populations provide new insights into mechanisms of microevolutionary change by revealing how variation in fitness-related traits may be maintained over very small spatial scales.
When a population is distributed across a heterogeneous environment, the prospects for local adaptation depend on the spatial scale of fitness variation relative to the spatial scale of dispersal. If the patchiness of environmental conditions is too “fine-grained,” the spatial acuity of natural selection may be severely diminished by the homogenizing effects of gene flow (García-Ramos and Kirkpatrick, 1997; Lenormand, 2002). For example, habitat variation over a scale of several …

In animals and plants, innate immunity is regulated by nucleotide binding domain and leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR) proteins that mediate pathogen recognition and that activate host-cell defense responses [1, 2]. Plant NB-LRR proteins, referred to as R proteins, have amino-terminal domains that contain a coiled coil (CC) or that share similarity with animal Toll and interleukin 1 receptors (TIR) [3]. To investigate R protein function, we are using the TIR-NB-LRR protein N that mediates resistance against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) [4] through recognition of the TMV p50 protein. Here, we describe N requirement gene 1 (NRG1), a novel N-resistance component that …

Association Between Archaeal Prolyl- And Leucyl-Trna Synthetases Enhances TrnaPro Aminoacylation, Mette Praetorius-Ibba, Theresa E. Rogers, Rachel Samson, Zvi Kelman, Michael Ibba

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase-containing complexes have been identified in different eukaryotes, and their existence has also been suggested in some Archaea. To investigate interactions involving aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases in Archaea, we undertook a yeast two-hybrid screen for interactions between Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus proteins using prolyl-tRNA synthetase (ProRS) as the bait. Interacting proteins identified included components of methanogenesis, protein-modifying factors, and leucyl-tRNA synthetase (LeuRS). The association of ProRS with LeuRS was confirmed in vitro by native gel electrophoresis and size exclusion chromatography. Determination of the steady-state kinetics of tRNAPro charging showed that the catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) of ProRS increased 5-fold …

The Web Of Law, Thomas A. Smith May 2005

The Web Of Law, Thomas A. Smith

University of San Diego Law and Economics Research Paper Series

Scientists and mathematicians in recent years have become intensely interested in the structure of networks. Networks turn out to be crucial to understanding everything from physics and biology, to economics and sociology. This article proposes that the science of networks has important contributions to make to the study of law as well. Legal scholars have yet to study, or even recognize as such, one of the largest, most accessible, and best documented human-created networks in existence. This is the centuries-old network of case law and other legal authorities into which lawyers, judges, and legal scholars routinely delve in order to …

New Statistical Paradigms Leading To Web-Based Tools For Clinical/Translational Science, Knut M. Wittkowski May 2005

New Statistical Paradigms Leading To Web-Based Tools For Clinical/Translational Science, Knut M. Wittkowski

COBRA Preprint Series

As the field of functional genetics and genomics is beginning to mature, we become confronted with new challenges. The constant drop in price for sequencing and gene expression profiling as well as the increasing number of genetic and genomic variables that can be measured makes it feasible to address more complex questions. The success with rare diseases caused by single loci or genes has provided us with a proof-of-concept that new therapies can be developed based on functional genomics and genetics.

Common diseases, however, typically involve genetic epistasis, genomic pathways, and proteomic pattern. Moreover, to better understand the underlying biologi-cal …

Using Databases And Computational Techniques To Infer The Function Of Novel Proteins, Viswanathan Ramanathan, Kelly A. Mercier, Robert Powers, Peter Revesz

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The Human Genome Project and similar efforts have resulted in the identification of an abundance of novel proteins. There is a need to expedite the process of assigning function to novel proteins. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy can be used to infer a general biological function for a protein of unknown function by identifying compounds that preferentially bind the protein and comparing these results against proteins with defined structure and function. The Functional NMR screen generates hundreds of data sets and a manual analysis of these data sets is laborious and time- consuming. It is hypothesized that several sub-tasks of …

Cdse Quantum Dots And Luminescent/Magnetic Particles For Biological Applications, Desheng Wang May 2005

Cdse Quantum Dots And Luminescent/Magnetic Particles For Biological Applications, Desheng Wang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

CdSe semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots--QDs) with diameters ranging between 1.5 and 8 nm exhibit strong, tunable luminescence [1-5]. They have been widely investigated for their size-dependent optoelectronic properties [6], and for their potential use in optical devices [7], biological labels [8] and sensors [9]. Luminescent quantum dots (QDs) show higher photostability and narrower emission peaks compared to organic fluorophores [8]. The objective of my project was to apply QDs magnetic/luminescent nanoparticle as biological labels in cells. Luminescent CdSe QDs emit bright visible light with high quantum yield and sharp emission peak. The CdSe QDs were capped with a ZnS layer. …

Oxidation Chemistry Of Some Early Transition-Metal Layered Perovskites, Karachie Ward May 2005

Oxidation Chemistry Of Some Early Transition-Metal Layered Perovskites, Karachie Ward

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Early transition-metal oxyhalides, (MCl)LaNb2O7 (M = V, Cr) have been prepared by ion exchange of layered perovskite hosts, ALaNb2O7 (A = Li, Rb), with anhydrous metal halides, MCl2. These compounds contain low-valent metals (M2+) that are receptive to oxidation. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows oxygen uptake at low temperatures (< 500 °C) and subsequent X-ray powder diffraction indicates that the host structure is maintained upon oxidation. Also through EDAX of the starting material and products, it has been found that there is a loss of chlorine upon oxidation. Thorough characterization of oxidation products will be presented and the ramifications of this chemistry on low-temperature topotactic formation of metal-oxide layers within perovskite hosts will be discussed.

Environmental Remediation With Fenton Reagents And Synthesis Of A Novel Halide Fluorescence Sensor, Guoxiang Xu May 2005

Environmental Remediation With Fenton Reagents And Synthesis Of A Novel Halide Fluorescence Sensor, Guoxiang Xu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and humic acid (SRHA) were used as dissolved organic matter (DOM) and were applied to probe the effect of DOM. Addition of DOM resulted in decreased first order rate constants for all species selected. The inhibition became more significant as the hydrophobicity of the species increased. The decrease could not be simply attributed to the binding of hydrophobic species to DOM. This can be explained by the physical isolation of iron (II), which binds to hydrophilic sites of DOM and is the hydroxyl radical generation site, from hydrophobic pollutants which bind to hydrophobic sites of …

Regression Analysis Of Dissolved Heavy Metals In Storm Water Runoff From Elevated Roadways, Ruben Erlacher May 2005

Regression Analysis Of Dissolved Heavy Metals In Storm Water Runoff From Elevated Roadways, Ruben Erlacher

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This proposed research focused on the prediction and identification of dissolved heavy metals in storm water runoff from elevated roadways. Storm water runoff from highways transports a significant load of contaminants, especially heavy metals and particulate matter, to receiving waters. Heavy metals, either in dissolved or particulatebound phases, are unique in the fact that unlike organic compounds, they are not degraded in the environment. The objective of this research was to develop a mathematical model to relate dissolved heavy metal concentration to different measurable parameters which are easily available and routinely measurable for elevated roadways. The reliability of the developed …
