A Methodology For Studying Design Cognition In The Real World, Bo Christensen May 2005

A Methodology For Studying Design Cognition In The Real World, Bo Christensen

Nordes Conference Series

The in vivo research methodology holds promise to improve some of the limitations of typical design cognition methodologies. Whereas typical design cognition methodology use protocol analysis (utilizing special ‘think-aloud’ instructions and/or artificial settings) or retrospective analyses, in vivo research attempts to study design thinking and reasoning ‘live’ or ‘online’ as it takes place in the real world. No special instructions are used since the method relies on natural dialogue taking place between designers. By recording verbalizations at product development meetings (or other suitable objects of study), transcribing, and coding the data, it is possible to test hypotheses about design cognition …

If Everything Is Design, What Then Is A Designer?, Sara Ilstedt Hjelm May 2005

If Everything Is Design, What Then Is A Designer?, Sara Ilstedt Hjelm

Nordes Conference Series

Design as an activity, a subject and an end product is expanding. Today we design everything from drugs to welfare systems. Society is an artefact where natural laws or science are no longer valid. But if everything is design and everyone designs what is then the particular competence of the practising professional in graphic, industrial or interior design? How can a design researcher contribute to the development of knowledge when it is argued that all research is design? The background for the discussion is pragmatic rather than ideological and is based in the authors own practice as a designer, researcher …

The Salient Features Of The Clock – A Functional Semiotic Design Analysis Of Relevance To Digital Design, Toke Riis Ebbesen May 2005

The Salient Features Of The Clock – A Functional Semiotic Design Analysis Of Relevance To Digital Design, Toke Riis Ebbesen

Nordes Conference Series

What is the basis for talking about digital design products? How can designers be more concise in their discourse on design. This article argues for the use of semiotics in practical design processes as well as within historical and interpretive research approaches. For this purpose the position of functional semiotics is explained in short terms and then further demonstrated in the analysis of a basic mechanical alarm clock. On this ground, the digital watch and digital design products in general are characterised and three possible avenues for the interpretation of the interactive possibilities of design products are discussed. Finally some …

Of Machines And Man: Exploring Growth And Decay Of Movement For Interaction Design, Larisa Sitorus, Esti Utami Handarini

Nordes Conference Series

In this article we explore Ingold’s notion of growth and decay of movement, an approach of understanding the relationship between human and the environment. We presented two instances regarding human and machine movement from our exploration during a brief ethnographic study at a local pot warehouse. This is followed by further analysis of two video clips, where we explore the richness of human movement as a relationship between the actor and the environment; we then analyze how the task is done differently in the machine’s case. In the last part of this article, we raise issues regarding the appropriation and …

Design And Test Of Lead-Zirconate-Titanate Flexural Plate Wave Based Actuators, Sriram Akella May 2005

Design And Test Of Lead-Zirconate-Titanate Flexural Plate Wave Based Actuators, Sriram Akella

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Current MEMS development is driven by the need to develop various 'Miniaturized Total Chemical Analysis Systems ([mu]TAS), biological and chemical sensing, drug delivery, molecular separation, microfiltration, amplification, and sequencing systems. In this work, the use of flexural plate wave devices as an actuator has been investigated.

This research was done with the aim of developing a platform to build FPW devices for use in System-On-Chip applications. It is well known that acoustic forces generated by a flexural plate wave (FPW) device can cause fluid motion, by the principle of acoustic streaming. Also the proven ability of FPW devices to cause …

Recombinant Bovine Interleukin-12 Stimulates A Gut Immune Response But Does Not Provide Resistance To Cryptosporidium Parvum Infection In Neonatal Calves, Paolo Pasquali, Ronald Fayer, Dante Zarlenga, Ana Canals, Tine De Marez, Maria Teresa Gomez Munoz, Sonia Almeria, Louis C. Gasbarre

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This study was undertaken to determine if administration of recombinant bovine interleukin-12 (rBoIL-12) could stimulate a cellular immune response that protected calves from an oral challenge inoculation with Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts. In a first experiment, rBoIL-12 intraperitoneally administered as a single dose 1 day before challenge inoculation, did not alter the course of infection. The percentage of immune competent cells and levels of cytokine gene expression in the ileo-cecal mucosa and in the draining lymph nodes of treated calves were similar to those of untreated control calves. However, when rBoIL-12 was subcutaneously administered daily from 2 days before infection to …

Pyrrolysine And Selenocysteine Use Dissimilar Decoding Strategies, Yan Zhang, Pavel V. Baranov, John F. Atkins, Vadim N. Gladyshev May 2005

Pyrrolysine And Selenocysteine Use Dissimilar Decoding Strategies, Yan Zhang, Pavel V. Baranov, John F. Atkins, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenocysteine (Sec) and pyrrolysine (Pyl) are known as the 21st and 22nd amino acids in protein. Both are encoded by codons that normally function as stop signals. Sec specification by UGA codons requires the presence of a cis-acting selenocysteine insertion sequence (SECIS) element. Similarly, it is thought that Pyl is inserted by UAG codons with the help of a putative pyrrolysine insertion sequence (PYLIS) element. Herein, we analyzed the occurrence of Pyl-utilizing organisms, Pyl-associated genes, and Pyl-containing proteins. The Pyl trait is restricted to several microbes, and only one organism has both Pyl and Sec. We found that methanogenic …

Interannual And Decadal Variability Of The Western Pacific Sea Surface Condition For The Years 1787-2000: Reconstruction Based On Stable Isotope Record From A Guam Coral, Ryuji Asami, Tsutomu Yamada, Yasufumi Iryu, Terrence M. Quinn, Christopher P. Meyer, Gustav Paulay May 2005

Meyer, Gustav Paulay

Marine Science Faculty Publications

We present a monthly resolved, 213‐year stable isotope time series from a coral from Guam (13°N, 145°E), which is located on the northern edge of the western Pacific warm pool. Oxygen isotopic composition of the coral skeleton (δ18Ocoral) shows seasonal, interannual, and decadal variability, which documents significant oceanographic changes related to thermal and hydrologic variations in this region. The δ18Ocoral anomaly reflects sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly and sea surface salinity (SSS) anomaly with significant r values of −0.69 and 0.49, respectively, which are strongly linked to oceanographic changes that occur during El …

Role Of Stat3 In Regulating Hif-1alpha Expression And Tumor Angiogenesis, Jon J. Briggs May 2005

Role Of Stat3 In Regulating Hif-1alpha Expression And Tumor Angiogenesis, Jon J. Briggs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Increased vascularization (angiogenesis) is a required adaptation for sustained tumor growth, and the primary mediator of de novo blood vessel formation is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The central transcriptional activator of VEGF is hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), a heterodimeric transcription factor composed of an inducible HIF-1α subunit and a constitutively expressed HIF-1β subunit. In addition to HIF-1, it has recently been reported that signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3) is required for VEGF production and angiogenesis. Although it is known that Stat3 is an important mediator of many of the oncogenic signaling pathways that regulate HIF-1α, it …

Endothelial Cell Pseudopods And Angiogenesis Of Breast Cancer Tumors, Ivan L. Cameron, Nicholas Short, Luzhe Sun, W. Elaine Hardman May 2005

Endothelial Cell Pseudopods And Angiogenesis Of Breast Cancer Tumors, Ivan L. Cameron, Nicholas Short, Luzhe Sun, W. Elaine Hardman

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Background

A neoplastic tumor cannot grow beyond a millimeter or so in diameter without recruitment of endothelial cells and new blood vessels to supply nutrition and oxygen for tumor cell survival. This study was designed to investigate formation of new blood vessels within a human growing breast cancer tumor model (MDA MB231 in mammary fat pad of nude female mouse). Once the tumor grew to 35 mm3, it developed a well-vascularized capsule. Histological sections of tumors greater than 35 mm3were stained with PAS, with CD-31 antibody (an endothelial cell maker), or with hypoxia inducible factor 1α …

Specific Functions Of Synaptically Localized Potassium Channels In Synaptic Transmission At The Neocortical Gabaergic Fast-Spiking Cell Synapse, Ethan Goldberg, Shigeo Watanabe, Su Ying Chang, Rolf Joho, Z Josh Huang, Christopher S. Leonard, Bernardo Rudy May 2005

Specific Functions Of Synaptically Localized Potassium Channels In Synaptic Transmission At The Neocortical Gabaergic Fast-Spiking Cell Synapse, Ethan Goldberg, Shigeo Watanabe, Su Ying Chang, Rolf Joho, Z Josh Huang, Christopher S. Leonard, Bernardo Rudy

NYMC Faculty Publications

Potassium (K+) channel subunits of the Kv3 subfamily (Kv3.1-Kv3.4) display a positively shifted voltage dependence of activation and fast activation/deactivation kinetics when compared with other voltage-gated K+ channels, features that confer on Kv3 channels the ability to accelerate the repolarization of the action potential (AP) efficiently and specifically. In the cortex, the Kv3.1 and Kv3.2 proteins are expressed prominently in a subset of GABAergic interneurons known as fast-spiking (FS) cells and in fact are a significant determinant of the fast-spiking discharge pattern. However, in addition to expression at FS cell somata, Kv3.1 and Kv3.2 proteins also are expressed prominently at …

Forest Resource Use, Land-Use, And Ecotourism In The RíO PláTano Biosphere Reserve, Honduras, Christina Marie Friedle

Dissertations and Theses

The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, a tropical rainforest reserve in the northeastern corner of Honduras, is home to several subsistence-based indigenous groups, including the Miskito, Pech and Garifuna, as well as the non-indigenous Ladinos. Communities within the reserve depend on forest resources, swidden agriculture, marine resources and/or small-scale ranching as the foundations for local economies. Regulations placed on these subsistence practices, after establishment of the biosphere reserve in 1980, have created unique and new pressures and resulted in a blend of traditional and innovative resource use. A notable result is the promotion of ecotourism as a solution for meeting the …
