The Evolution Of Our Preferences: Evidence From Capuchin-Monkey Trading Behavior, Keith M. Chen, Venkat Lakshminarayanan, Laurie Santos Jun 2005

The Evolution Of Our Preferences: Evidence From Capuchin-Monkey Trading Behavior, Keith M. Chen, Venkat Lakshminarayanan, Laurie Santos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Behavioral economics has demonstrated systematic decision-making biases in both lab and field data. But are these biases learned or innate? We investigate this question using experiments on a novel set of subjects — capuchin monkeys. By introducing a fiat currency and trade to a capuchin colony, we are able to recover their preferences over a wide range of goods and risky choices. We show that standard price theory does a remarkably good job of describing capuchin purchasing behavior; capuchin monkeys react rationally to both price and wealth shocks. However, when capuchins are faced with more complex choices including risky gambles, …

Effects Of Leukemia Inhibitory Factor On 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Jessica C. Hogan, Jacqueline M. Stephens Jun 2005

Effects Of Leukemia Inhibitory Factor On 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Jessica C. Hogan, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a member of the gp130 cytokine family and signals through the receptor complex of gp130 and the LIF receptor (LIFR) to activate the JAK/STAT signaling cascade. Since LIF activates STATs 1 and 3 in adipocytes, we examined the effects of LIF on 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Our studies clearly demonstrate that LIF treatment had minimal effects on adipocyte differentiation as judged by marker gene expression, but did inhibit triacylglyceride (TAG) accumulation during adipogenesis. Acute treatment with LIF resulted in increased expression of suppressors of cytokine signaling-3 (SOCS3) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-δ (C/EBPδ) mRNA in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Moreover, the …

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Of Cancer: Current Status And Future Prospects, Rolf F. Barth, Jeffrey A. Coderre, M. Graça H. Vicente, Thomas E. Blue Jun 2005

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Of Cancer: Current Status And Future Prospects, Rolf F. Barth, Jeffrey A. Coderre, M. Graça H. Vicente, Thomas E. Blue

Faculty Publications

Background: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is based on the nuclear reaction that occurs when boron-10 is irradiated with low-energy thermal neutrons to yield high linear energy transfer α particles and recoiling lithium-7 nuclei. Clinical interest in BNCT has focused primarily on the treatment of high-grade gliomas and either cutaneous primaries or cerebral metastases of melanoma, most recently, head and neck and liver cancer. Neutron sources for BNCT currently are limited to nuclear reactors and these are available in the United States, Japan, several European countries, and Argentina. Accelerators also can be used to produce epithermal neutrons and these are …

Subzero Water Permeability Parameters And Optimal Freezing Rates For Sperm Cells Of The Southern Platyfish, Xiphophorus Maculatus, D. Pinisetty, C. Huang, Q. Dong, T. R. Tiersch, R. V. Devireddy

Faculty Publications

This study reports the subzero water transport characteristics (and empirically determined optimal rates for freezing) of sperm cells of live-bearing fishes of the genus Xiphophorus, specifically those of the southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus. These fishes are valuable models for biomedical research and are commercially raised as ornamental fish for use in aquariums. Water transport during freezing of X. maculatus sperm cell suspensions was obtained using a shape-independent differential scanning calorimeter technique in the presence of extracellular ice at a cooling rate of 20°C/min in three different media: (1) Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS) without cryoprotective agents (CPAs); (2) HBSS with …

Automatically Discovering The Number Of Clusters In Web Page Datasets, Zhongmei Yao Jun 2005

Automatically Discovering The Number Of Clusters In Web Page Datasets, Zhongmei Yao

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Clustering is well-suited for Web mining by automatically organizing Web pages into categories, each of which contains Web pages having similar contents. However, one problem in clustering is the lack of general methods to automatically determine the number of categories or clusters. For the Web domain in particular, currently there is no such method suitable for Web page clustering. In an attempt to address this problem, we discover a constant factor that characterizes the Web domain, based on which we propose a new method for automatically determining the number of clusters in Web page data sets. We discover that the …

A New Early Eocene Mammalian Fauna From The Great Divide Basin, Southwestern Wyoming: Vertebrate Paleontology, Paleoclimatology, And Biostratigraphy, Edward M. Johnson

Masters Theses

A new early Eocene mammalian fauna from a series of localities in the Great Divide Basin of southwestern Wyoming is described in this Masters Thesis. Seven localities in the vicinity of Tipton Buttes have yielded 1627 fossil specimens that have been identified, catalogued, and analyzed. The goal of this thesis is to develop a biostratigraphic framework for dating this fossil assemblage based on comparisons with well-dated assemblages from other localities in the American West. Field crews from Western Michigan University have collected fossil vertebrates from Tipton Buttes during most summer field seasons between 1995 and 2003. The analyses indicate that …

Manganese Distribution Across The Blood-Brain Barrier. Iv. Evidence For Brain Influx Through Store-Operated Calcium Channels, Janelle S. Crossgrove, Robert A. Yokel

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Manganese (Mn) is a required co-factor for many ubiquitous enzymes; however, chronic Mn overexposure can cause manganism, a parkinsonian-like syndrome. Previous studies showed Mn influx into brain is carrier-mediated, though the putative carrier(s) were not established. Studies conducted with cultured bovine brain microvascular endothelial cells (bBMECs), which comprise the blood–brain barrier, revealed 54Mn (II) uptake positively correlated with pH, was temperature-dependent, and was sodium- and energy-independent. Brain 54Mn uptake correlated inversely with calcium (Ca) concentration, but 45Ca uptake was unaltered by high Mn concentration. Lanthanum (La), a non-selective inhibitor of several Ca channel types, as well as …

The Hunter-Self: Perforations, Prescriptions, And Primordial Beings Among The Jotï, Venezuelan Guayana, Eglee L. Zent

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article is an ethnographic exploration of reproducing the self and life through hunting among the Jotï, a group of about 900 persons living along the slopes and intermountain valleys of the Sierra Maigualida in the Amazonas and Bolívar states of the Venezuelan Guayana. Jotï hunting knowledge, as conceived by the author, is an instrumental part of a lifestyle. This essay concentrates on the dynamics of Jotï hunting as it involves magic and ritual practices, mythology and ontology, ecological symbolism, and spirituality. Analysis of the symbolic components of Jotï hunting habits discloses a deep, complex, and holistic conception of reality, …

Fisheries Occasional Publication No.21 - Allocation Of The Western Rock Lobster Resource Between User Groups, Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Occasional Publications

In this submission to IFAAC, the Department will outline what it believes are the most practical and cost effective ways of managing a system of allocation amongst the commercial, customary and recreational sectors. This recommendation recognises that cost efficiencies and outcomes will be greatly affected by the type of allocation model that is chosen. Consequently the Department recommends that the allocation system should be based on a single allocation to each sector that is available over the entire fishery.

The Department does not recommend having any finer scale zoning of the allocations, or the creation of exclusive recreational fishing areas. …

Husserl’S Concept Of The ‘Transcendental Person’: Another Look At The Husserl–Heidegger Relationship, Sebastian Luft Jun 2005

Husserl’S Concept Of The ‘Transcendental Person’: Another Look At The Husserl–Heidegger Relationship, Sebastian Luft

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This paper offers a further look at Husserl’s late thought on the transcendental subject and the Husserl–Heidegger relationship. It attempts a reconstruction of how Husserl hoped to assert his own thoughts on subjectivity vis-à-vis Heidegger, while also pointing out where Husserl did not reach the new level that Heidegger attained. In his late manuscripts, Husserl employs the term ‘transcendental person’ to describe the transcendental ego in its fullest ‘concretion’. I maintain that although this concept is a consistent development of Husserl’s earlier analyses of constitution, Husserl was also defending himself against Heidegger, who criticized him for framing the subject in …

Disordered Speech Assessment Using Automatic Methods Based On Quantitative Measures, Lingyun Gu, John G. Harris, Rahul Shrivastav, Christine Sapienza

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Speech quality assessment methods are necessary for evaluating and documenting treatment outcomes of patients suffering from degraded speech due to Parkinson's disease, stroke, or other disease processes. Subjective methods of speech quality assessment are more accurate and more robust than objective methods but are time-consuming and costly. We propose a novel objective measure of speech quality assessment that builds on traditional speech processing techniques such as dynamic time warping (DTW) and the Itakura-Saito (IS) distortion measure. Initial results show that our objective measure correlates well with the more expensive subjective methods. © 2005 Hindawi Publishing Corporation.

An Evolutionary Algorithm To Generate Hyper-Ellipsoid Detectors For Negative Selection, Joseph M. Shapiro, Gary B. Lamont, Gilbert L. Peterson Jun 2005

An Evolutionary Algorithm To Generate Hyper-Ellipsoid Detectors For Negative Selection, Joseph M. Shapiro, Gary B. Lamont, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

This paper introduces hyper-ellipsoids as an improvement to hyper-spheres as intrusion detectors in a negative selection problem within an artificial immune system. Since hyper-spheres are a specialization of hyper-ellipsoids, hyper-ellipsoids retain the benefits of hyper-spheres. However, hyper-ellipsoids are much more flexible, mostly in that they can be stretched and reoriented. The viability of using hyper-ellipsoids is established using several pedagogical problems. We conjecture that fewer hyper-ellipsoids than hyper-spheres are needed to achieve similar coverage of nonself space in a negative selection problem. Experimentation validates this conjecture. In pedagogical benchmark problems, the number of hyper-ellipsoids to achieve good results is significantly …
