Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of An Electrostatically Actuated Microfluidic Valve, Ryan Dale Rivers Jun 2005

Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of An Electrostatically Actuated Microfluidic Valve, Ryan Dale Rivers

Master's Theses

Microfluidic device construction uses certain critical structures throughout many different applications. The valve structure remains one of the primary structures that present a barrier to miniaturization and portability. The extensive support devices required to power common microfluidic valves remove a significant amount of freedom from microfluidic device design. Moving to electrostatic methods of actuation could reduce the overall footprint of the microfluidic valve. This thesis covers three concept prototypes. Concept I presents an attempt at inlaying gold electrodes into polydimethylsiloxane substrates. Concept II attempts to use liquid silver injected into channels as electrode materials. Concept III uses aluminum sputtering to …

The Effects Of Price Regulation On Pharmaceutical R&D And Innovation, Heather M. O'Neill, Lena Clarissa Crain Jun 2005

The Effects Of Price Regulation On Pharmaceutical R&D And Innovation, Heather M. O'Neill, Lena Clarissa Crain

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

As rising health care expenditures focus government attention on slowing the growth, the pharmaceutical industry comes under increasing pressure to curb prices of ethical drugs. Pharmaceutical price regulations have been implemented in many countries to control pharmaceutical expenditures. Yet, creating innovative drugs requires enormous R&D costs, which in turn require adequate expected economic returns. Since price controls reduce profits and expected returns, as countries invoke stricter price regulations, firms will either move their R&D process into less regulated markets or move out of innovative R&D. This paper assesses the impact of drug price regulations in Japan compared to market-priced drugs …

Heat Damage In Alfalfa Silage, Alvaro Garcia Jun 2005

Heat Damage In Alfalfa Silage, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Differences in maturity of the stand, the weather, and harvesting, storing practices, and facilities affect the successful preservation of alfalfa silage. Silage fermentation is basically a destructive process, for nutrients are lost through chemical changes. The feeding value of alfalfa silage will always be less than that of the original forage, and the ensiling practices that are used will determine the extent of those losses. Losses from fresh forage to the ensiled feed arise from one or more of the following: field, oxidation, fermentation, and effluent. Aeration and the heating that results are among the most important causes.

The Unionid Mussel Fauna Of Northeastern Ohio’S Grand River, Martin K. Huehner, Robert A. Krebs, Gregory Zimmerman, Melissa Mejia

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Unionid mussel distribution, numbers, and species were examined in the Grand River to provide a recent and comprehensive study of mussels from northeast Ohio’s longest river. The entire length of the Grand was canoed and examined for unionid mussel beds, with the exception of upstream areas where the river was small; SCUBA was used to survey just upstream of Fairport Harbor. The lower river, designated Grand River’s Wild and Scenic section, was studied in 1995, the middle reaches, called the Scenic section, were surveyed in 1996, and completion of the headwater region followed in 1998. Finally, a survey near the …

Illinois River 2004 Pollutant Loads At Arkansas Highway 59 Bridge, Marc A. Nelson, L. Wade Cash, Keith Trost, Jennifer Purtle

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Automatic water sampler and a U. S. Geological Survey gauging station were established in 1995 on the main stem of the Illinois River at the Arkansas Highway 59 Bridge. Since that time, continuous stage and discharge measurements and water quality sampling have been used to determine pollutant concentrations and loads in the Arkansas portion of the Illinois River. This report represents the results from the measurement and sampling by the Arkansas Water Resources Center -Water Quality Lab for January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2004.

Water Quality Sampling, Analysis And Annual Load Determinations For Tss, Nitrogen And Phosphorus At The Washington County Road 195 Bridge On The West Fork Of The White River, 2004 Annual Report, Marc A. Nelson, L. Wade Cash, G. Keith Trost, Jennifer Purtle

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

A water quality sampling station was installed at the Washington County road 195 bridge on the West Fork of the White River just above the confluence of the three main forks of the Upper White River in December 2001. The Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) was approved by EPA Region six on March 2002 and sampling was begun at that time. This station is coordinated with a USGS gauging station at the same location. This station was instrumented to collect samples at sufficient intervals across the hydrograph to accurately estimate the flux of total suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus into …
