Classification Of The Aesthetic Value Of Urban Rivers, Ales Bisjak
Classification Of The Aesthetic Value Of Urban Rivers, Ales Bisjak
2005
Environmental goals of the European Water Framework Directive (hereinafter called: WFD) (The European Parliament and the Council, 2000), adopted by the European Community in 2000, foresee the achievement of the Good Ecological Status of all surface water bodies by the year 2015. Goals should be achieved by the way of applying the measures, such as restoration or rehabilitation works. In the context of the modern care of the river environment, rivers in urban environment areas should be considered as a special category. European project URBEM (Urban River Basin Enhancement Methods), funded by the European Commission in the 5th Framework Programme …
Restoration Design For An Urban River: Some Lessons Learned, David C. Nyman
Restoration Design For An Urban River: Some Lessons Learned, David C. Nyman
2005
In 1997, a project was completed on the Mad River in Waterbury, Connecticut to provide physical habitat enhancement measures in a previously altered reach of river. That project provides several lessons about the application of such restoration techniques in an urbanized setting.
Maine And New England Fish Introductions - A Historical Perspective, David Halliwell
Maine And New England Fish Introductions - A Historical Perspective, David Halliwell
2005
New England's waterways have served as corridors for spreading legally-illegally introduced fish over the past 170 years, resulting in artificially enriched and altered fish assemblages in many lakes and ponds. Biological contamination - in terms of Maine fish introductions, range from the original transplantation of native species (e.g., chain pickerel - 1832) to the early importation of exotic common carp, goldfish, brown trout, and black bass during the latter half of the 19th century and up to the recent illegal introduction of bluegill and green sunfish in the early 21st century. During the 20th century, introduced (transplanted) fish species included …
Saltcedar Eradication Along The Pecos River In Texas, Wayne Belzer
Saltcedar Eradication Along The Pecos River In Texas, Wayne Belzer
2005
The Red Bluff Water and Power Control District proposed the Pecos River Ecosystem Project in 1997, to address saltcedar issues along the Pecos River. The initial objectives of the project were to increase efficiency of water delivery in the river to irrigation districts within the Red Bluff District and improve the quality of the water by decreasing the salinity. After four years of herbicide application on the saltcedar, the project has emerged as the first step to what could be important to the overall statewide plan for water conservation along Texas rivers by managing saltcedar infestations.
The National Park Service’S Exotic Plant Management Teams: A Rapid Response To Controlling Invasive Species, Todd Neel
2005
Today, exotic plants infest approximately 2.6 million acres in the national park system, reducing the natural diversity of these special places. Drawing funds from the Natural Resource Challenge, the National Park Service (NPS) Biological Resource Management Division (BRMD) established rapid response Exotic Plant Management Teams (EPMT) to control exotic plants. Modeled after the approach used in wild land fire fighting, EPMTs provide highly trained, mobile strike forces of plant management specialists who assist parks in the control of exotic plants.

Biological Control Of Common Salvinia In Louisiana, Seth Johnson
Biological Control Of Common Salvinia In Louisiana, Seth Johnson
2005
The United States Geological Survey lists over 30 non-native aquatic plant species colonizing water bodies in Louisiana. Some have been here for decades and remain fairly rare (such as Asian duck lettuce) while others (such as common salvinia, Salvinia minima), have covered hundreds of thousands of acres in the last 20 years. Common salvinia, along with alligator weed, water hyacinth, hydrilla, torpedo grass and water lettuce are the six most troublesome non-native species in Louisiana. Common salvinia can be controlled with herbicides but relief is temporary and repeated applications are often uneconomical. Biological control could offer a cheaper and more …
Economic Effects Of Riparian Corridors And Upland Wildlife Habitat, Noelwah R. Netusil
Economic Effects Of Riparian Corridors And Upland Wildlife Habitat, Noelwah R. Netusil
2005
This study uses the hedonic price method to examine the relationship between the sale price of single-family residential properties in an urban watershed in Portland, Oregon and (1) the amount of riparian vegetation and upland wildlife habitat on a property, and (2) the amount and quality of riparian corridors within ½ mile of a property. Streams on a property are found to increase a property’s sale price while streams in the surrounding neighborhood have a negative effect. While increasing the overall percentage of riparian corridors and upland wildlife habitat is found to have a positive but declining effect on sale …

Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Links Nf-Κb To Pge2 In Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Altered Fibroblast In-Vitro Wound Healing, Yi Jia, John Turek
Department of Basic Medical Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: This study investigated mechanisms of altered fibroblast collagen production induced by polyunsaturated fatty acids. 3T3-Swiss fibroblasts were grown in medium containing either eicosapentaenoic or arachidonic acid. The effects of nuclear factor-kappaB activation by lipopolysaccharide on inducible nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, collagen production, and in-vitro wound healing were studied. Results: Eicosapentaenoic acid treated cells produced less prostaglandin E2 but had increased inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, nitric oxide production, collagen formation, and recoverage area during in-vitro wound healing than cells treated with arachidonic acid. Activation of nuclear factor-kappaB with lipopolysaccharide increased inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, the …

Sibling Influence On Adolescent Cigarette, Alcohol, And Marijuana Use, Benjamin G. Gibbs
Sibling Influence On Adolescent Cigarette, Alcohol, And Marijuana Use, Benjamin G. Gibbs
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to estimate the association between sibling drug use and adolescent alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use. Research is conducted using survey data from a probability sample of 4,987 adolescents in grades 9–12 in Utah. To account for the limited frequency of drug use among respondents, Poisson regression is used to estimate models for each type of drug. In support of current literature, findings indicate that having a sibling who uses drugs increases the frequency of drug use substantially, even when peer influences are taken into account. Significant sibling associations with adolescent drug use found in …

Investigation Of The Mechanisms Of Ozone-Mediated Viral Inactivation, Seiga Ohmine
Investigation Of The Mechanisms Of Ozone-Mediated Viral Inactivation, Seiga Ohmine
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies have established that ozone-oxygen mixtures can be used to inactivate a variety of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi and viruses. Ozone is a potent reactive oxygen species (ROS) that rapidly decays into a variety of additional short half-life ROS which have been shown to cause oxidative damage to biological molecules. I hypothesize that controlled ozone exposure and the subsequent generation of additional ROS would reduce viral infectivity by lipid and/or protein peroxidation. A proprietary ozone-oxygen delivery system was used to inactivate a series of enveloped [herpes simplex virus type-1 strain McIntyre (HSV-1), vaccinia strain Elstree (VAC), vesicular stomatitis virus …

Holocene Hydrologic Variation At Lake Titicaca, Bolivia/Peru, And Its Relationship To North Atlantic Climate Variation, P. A. Baker, Sherilyn C. Fritz, J. Garland, E. Ekdahl
Holocene Hydrologic Variation At Lake Titicaca, Bolivia/Peru, And Its Relationship To North Atlantic Climate Variation, P. A. Baker, Sherilyn C. Fritz, J. Garland, E. Ekdahl
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
A growing number of sites in the Northern Hemisphere show centennial- to millennial-scale climate variation that has been correlated with change in solar variability or with change in North Atlantic circulation. However, it is unclear how (or whether) these oscillations in the climate system are manifest in the Southern Hemisphere because of a lack of sites with suitably high sampling resolution. In this paper, we reconstruct the lake-level history of Lake Titicaca, using the carbon isotopic content of sedimentary organic matter, to evaluate centennial-to millennial-scale precipitation variation and its phasing relative to sites in the Northern Hemisphere. The pattern and …

Bats Of Jamaica, Hugh H. Genoways, John W. Bickham, Robert J. Baker, Carleton J. Phillips
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The modern history of Jamaica is entwined with European exploration of the New World beginning with the landing of Columbus at Discovery Bay on May 4, 1494, during his second voyage to the Americas. Since that time the word Jamaica has conjured thoughts of tropical beaches, trade winds, pleasant tropical nights, Spaniards, British navy, Empire, sugar, rum, plantations, slavery, revolt, maroons, pirates, Port Royal, disasters, hurricanes, and in more recent years independence, tourism, Reggae, and welcoming and happy residents. Our knowledge of Jamaican natural history begins with Browne (1789). He and other early naturalists displayed a broad interest in plants …

Evaluating Modeling Techniques For Cattle Heat Stress Prediction, T. M. Brown-Brandl, David D. Jones, Wayne Woldt
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Researchers have traditionally predicted animal responses by means of statistical models. This study was conducted to evaluate modeling techniques. One hundred and twenty-eight feedlot heifers were observed during a 2-month period during the summer of 2002. Respiration rate and surface temperature were taken on a random sample of 40 animals twice a day. Five different models (two statistical models, two fuzzy inference systems, and one neural network) were developed using 70% of this data, and then tested using the remaining 30%. Results showed that the neural network described the most variation in test data (68%), followed by the data-dependent fuzzy …

A Mathematical Model Of Adhesion Interactions Between Living Cells, Casey P. Johnson
A Mathematical Model Of Adhesion Interactions Between Living Cells, Casey P. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a simple force-based model of moving and interacting cells that incorporates a realistic description of cell adhesion and applies it to a system of spherical cells. In addition, several results in matrix theory are proved with the end of showing that the equations produced by the model uniquely determine the motion of the system or cells.
