Analysis Of Liquid-Phase Chemical Detection Using Guided Shear Horizontal-Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors, Zhonghui Li, Yolanda Jones, Jeanne M. Hossenlopp, Richard Cernosek, Fabien Josse

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Direct chemical sensing in liquid environments using polymer-guided shear horizontal surface acoustic wave sensor platforms on 36° rotated Y-cut LiTaO3 is investigated. Design considerations for optimizing these devices for liquid-phase detection are systematically explored. Two different sensor geometries are experimentally and theoretically analyzed. Dual delay line devices are used with a reference line coated with poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and a sensing line coated with a chemically sensitive polymer, which acts as both a guiding layer and a sensing layer or with a PMMA waveguide and a chemically sensitive polymer. Results show the three-layer model provides higher sensitivity than the …

The Role Of Choice Versus Preference: An Analysis Of Why Choice Interventions Work, John D. Adelinis Jul 2005

The Role Of Choice Versus Preference: An Analysis Of Why Choice Interventions Work, John D. Adelinis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has shown that providing students with the opportunity to choose the type of academic assignment could reduce a variety of problem behavior. However, procedural limitations of previous research prevent definitive conclusions regarding the mechanism by which choice interventions effect behavioral change. Furthermore, because research related to choice interventions has been limited primarily to children with developmental and emotional disabilities, the generality of such interventions is unclear. Therefore, the current study set out to extend the efforts of previous researchers by attempting to further isolate the mechanism by which choice procedures produce improved behavioral performance and attempted to further …

Adaptive Sampling Of Phytoplankton Responses To Episodic Physical Forcing In The Nearshore Coastal Ocean, Mark A. Moline Jul 2005

Adaptive Sampling Of Phytoplankton Responses To Episodic Physical Forcing In The Nearshore Coastal Ocean, Mark A. Moline

Biological Sciences

The original proposal focused on the linkages between in-water physical, biological and optical dynamics and to assess the degree to which remote sensing could be applied. These areas were approached during the 2001 sampling season and with follow on studies, as part of the extension of the grant through the PECASE award, there are three specific areas of work that have evolved from these original efforts. The first is a further examination of the coherence between convergence zones, general current patterns and spatial distribution of in-water biological signals (phytoplankton). The second is a remote sensing focus, attempting to define the …

Angiotensin Ii-Mediated Regulation Of The Human Angiotensin Ii Type 1 Receptor Gene, Xylophone Vijai Aasee Victor Jul 2005

Angiotensin Ii-Mediated Regulation Of The Human Angiotensin Ii Type 1 Receptor Gene, Xylophone Vijai Aasee Victor

Theses and Dissertations

The physiological responses of angiotensin II (Ang II) are mediated across the cell membrane through the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), a heptahelical membrane protein coupled to trimeric G-proteins on the cytosolic side. AT1R on binding its ligand, Ang II, leads to downregulation of cell-surface receptor and also its mRNA. We have investigated whether the 3'- and 5'-untranslated regions of the human AT1R mRNA mediate the degradation of hAT1R mRNA by post-transcriptional mechanisms in human adrenocortical carcinoma cell line (H295R cells). Protein kinase C (PKC) activator, phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), showed that the downregulation of hAT1R mRNA is mediated by the …

Is The Party Over? Unmarried Fatherhood And Drug And Alcohol Use, Jonathan A. Jarvis Jul 2005

Is The Party Over? Unmarried Fatherhood And Drug And Alcohol Use, Jonathan A. Jarvis

Theses and Dissertations

Using waves two and three of the National Survey of Adolescent Males (1990 and 1995) I examine the effects of marriage, paternity and father involvement on the use of drugs and alcohol by young men. Despite the importance of fatherhood as an adult role, I argue that commitment to the role of fatherhood and not paternity itself is what alters behavior. I hypothesize that young men who assume responsibility for fathering their children are more likely to reduce their drug and alcohol use over time than young men who father children but do not assume the role of parent. Results …

Visualizing And Interacting With Externally Coupled Engineering Analysis Results, Paul Frederick Nelson Jul 2005

Visualizing And Interacting With Externally Coupled Engineering Analysis Results, Paul Frederick Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Visualizing and interacting with engineering analysis results can provide valuable insights into a system's performance and aid in engineering decision-making. Currently, the majority of analysis codes are developed as isolated solutions focusing only on the most prominent physical influence to a system, such as thermal, structural, fluid, etc. Frequently, more than one of these physical influences combined to force engineers to evaluate complex, coupled systems. Coupled analysis codes are becoming more common place tools for engineers demanding high fidelity simulations of complex systems. External code coupling solutions are emerging to permit generic coupling of separate, world class CAE solvers thus …

Calmodulin And Pf6 Are Components Of A Complex That Localizes To The C1 Microtubule Of The Flagellar Central Apparatus, Matthew J. Wargo, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith Jul 2005

Calmodulin And Pf6 Are Components Of A Complex That Localizes To The C1 Microtubule Of The Flagellar Central Apparatus, Matthew J. Wargo, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith

Dartmouth Scholarship

Studies of flagellar motility in Chlamydomonas mutants lacking specific central apparatus components have supported the hypothesis that the inherent asymmetry of this structure provides important spatial cues for asymmetric regulation of dynein activity. These studies have also suggested that specific projections associated with the C1 and C2 central tubules make unique contributions to modulating motility; yet, we still do not know the identities of most polypeptides associated with the central tubules. To identify components of the C1a projection, we took an immunoprecipitation approach using antibodies generated against PF6. The pf6 mutant lacks the C1a projection and possesses flagella that only …

Development Of A Model For The Kinetics And Mechanism Of Nitrogenase, Phillip E. Wilson Jul 2005

Development Of A Model For The Kinetics And Mechanism Of Nitrogenase, Phillip E. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogenase has a central role in the global nitrogen cycle as the enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of atmospheric N2 to NH3. Fixed nitrogen is generally limiting in the environment and in agriculture, so nitrogenase has received much attention as an alternative to nitrogen fertilizers. Characterizing the mechanism of nitrogenase is the goal of this work. The molybdenum nitrogenase enzyme system is comprised of the MoFe protein and the Fe protein. Interactions between these proteins and nucleotides are crucial to catalysis. An important approach to characterize these interactions is to correlate the kinetics of nitrogenase catalysis to a mechanism based …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: Trypanosomosis is a major impediment to livestock farming in sub-Saharan Africa and limits the full potential of agricultural development in the 36 countries where it is endemic. In man, sleeping sickness is fatal if untreated and causes severe morbidity. This study was undertaken in western Kenya, an area that is endemic for both human and livestock trypanosomosis. While trypanosomosis in livestock is present at high levels of endemicity, sleeping sickness occurs at low levels over long periods, interspersed with epidemics, underscoring the complexity of the disease epidemiology. In this study, we sought to investigate the prevalence of trypanosomes in …

Homologous Strand Exchange And Dna Helicase Activities In Plant Mitochondria, Daqing Song Jul 2005

Homologous Strand Exchange And Dna Helicase Activities In Plant Mitochondria, Daqing Song

Theses and Dissertations

Homologous recombination is critical for generating genetic variation in living organisms by exchange and rearrangement of DNA. Most of our knowledge about homologous recombination is limited to processes in bacteria or in eukaryotic nuclei. In E. coli, homologous recombination is dependent on the RecA protein. Higher plant chloroplasts have RecA-like strand exchange activity. However, little is known about these mechanisms in higher plant mitochondria. I have detected a RecA-like strand exchange activity in soybean mitochondria. This activity forms joint molecules in the presence of ATP, Mg2+, and homologous DNA substrates. In addition, the E. coli single-stranded DNA binding (SSB) protein …

Fertility Of Yearling Beef Bulls During Mating, R. W. Ellis, Gary P. Rupp, P. J. Chenoweth, L. V. Cundiff, D. D. Lunstra Jul 2005

Fertility Of Yearling Beef Bulls During Mating, R. W. Ellis, Gary P. Rupp, P. J. Chenoweth, L. V. Cundiff, D. D. Lunstra

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Crossbred (Bos taurus) yearling beef bulls were assessed for breeding soundness and physical traits prior to multi-sire natural mating at pasture. Bulls (n = 60) were assigned to six groups of nine or 10 bulls and two bull-groups were rotated on 14-day intervals during a 63-day mating season in each breeding herd (n = 3) of 191–196 cows. The remaining bulls (n = 14) were maintained under similar environmental conditions without mating exposure. Bulls were observed during mating and assessed for breeding soundness and changes following mating. Bulls used for breeding (UFB) lost 77 kg …

Genetic Analysis Of Conserved Residues In Phou Of Escherichia Coli, Stewart G. Gardner Jul 2005

Genetic Analysis Of Conserved Residues In Phou Of Escherichia Coli, Stewart G. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

The Pho regulon is controlled by the PstSCAB transporter, PhoU, and the two-component proteins, PhoB and PhoR. PhoU is a negative regulator of the Pho regulon under phosphate-replete conditions. How PhoU functions is unknown. Many PhoU homologues are found widely throughout prokaryotic domains. There are several conserved amino acid residues in the PhoU protein. It is hypothesized that these residues play an important role in the function of PhoU. To test this hypothesis, several site directed mutations in the phoU gene have been produced with single amino acid changes in conserved residues. After testing these mutants, it was found that …

Strain, Personality Traits, And Deviance Among Adolescents: Moderating Factors, Jennifer J. Wareham Jul 2005

Strain, Personality Traits, And Deviance Among Adolescents: Moderating Factors, Jennifer J. Wareham

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

General strain theory has received a fair amount of empirical support and theoretical elaboration over the past several years. Since the introduction of general strain theory, Agnew and others have attempted to increase the comprehensiveness of the processes involved in strain theory. Until recently, the general strain theory literature has ignored what Agnew and associates (Agnew, Brezina, Wright, & Cullen, 2002) argue may be one of the most important conditioning effects of the strain-crime relationship, namely the dispositions or personality traits of the individual experiencing strain. Recently, Agnew and associates (2002) published results from a study examining the conditioning effects …

An Energy-Efficient Media Access Control Protocol For Chain-Type Wireless Sensor Networks, Yu Wang, Chang Wen Chen Jul 2005

An Energy-Efficient Media Access Control Protocol For Chain-Type Wireless Sensor Networks, Yu Wang, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We present in this paper an energy efficient media access control (MAC) protocol for chain-type wireless sensor networks. The chain-type sensor networks are fundamentally different from traditional sensor networks in that the sensor nodes in this class of networks are deployed along narrow and elongated geographical areas and form a chain-type topology. Recently, we have successfully developed hierarchical network architecture, sensor deployment strategy, and corresponding network initialization and operation protocols for this class of sensor networks. In this paper, we present a novel TDMA scheduling protocol that takes full advantages of the available channel reuse inherent in the chain-type sensor …

Effects Of Oxidative Stress On Ascidia Interrupta Embryogenesis, Anna Stwora, Virginia L. Scofield, Zen Faulkes Jul 2005

Effects Of Oxidative Stress On Ascidia Interrupta Embryogenesis, Anna Stwora, Virginia L. Scofield, Zen Faulkes

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Discussion: Oxidative stress does not affect very early development, which is consistent with the "be prepared" hypothesis (Epel, 2003). Two possible hypotheses could explain this result. The"be prepared" hypothesis suggests that very early embryos have static but short-lived anti-oxidant defensive mechanism in place, such as enzymes that neutralize hydrogen peroxide...

Assessment Of Resource Selection Using Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems (Gis) For Two Vertebrates In Disparate Habitats: The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) And The North Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena Glacialis), Cherie A. Keller Jul 2005

Keller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a treatise on spatially-explicit resource selection on two very different vertebrate species. The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is the most endangered large whales in the world. Ship strikes and fishing gear entanglement are impediments to recovery. The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is an imperiled species whose upland habitats are shrinking from urban and agricultural development. Determining spatial distribution of important resources is important for conservation strategies. Historical and modern thinking of habitat selection theory and analytical techniques are reviewed and applied to these species. Fine-scale resource selection of sea surface temperature …
