Post Retention With Mineral Trioxide Aggregate And Accelerated Portland Cement, Pamela P. Harrington

Perforations occurring during post placement are problematic. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is slow to set. A trial demonstrated that CaCl2 accelerated the set of Portland cement. Forty single-rooted teeth were sectioned, treated with endodontic therapy and post prepared. The first group contained 20 teeth, evaluated at 72 hours. MTA, Portland cement with 10% CaCl2, 15% CaCl2 and zinc phosphate were used as post cements. The second group was evaluated at 28 days. The posts were cemented with either MTA or zinc phosphate. Instron mechanical testing was used to determine forces needed for post dislodgement. The 72 hour group showed statistically …

I quantified brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) movement and habitat use in a central Appalachian watershed, the upper Shavers Fork of the Cheat River over three seasons (spring/summer 2000-01, fall 2000) with telemetry. The objectives of my study were to: (1) quantify trout habitat use among seasons, and between the mainstem and Rocky Run (a major tributary), (2) quantify the effect of temperature extremes on habitat use by brook trout, (3) quantify trout movement among seasons and between the mainstem and Rocky Run, and (4) relate movement to variations in stream flow, water temperature, and access …

In the summer, a discharge from a power plant cooling reservoir (Mount Storm Lake) located on the Stony River can result in large increases in discharge and temperature. Further, the Stony River is affected by mining-impacted tributaries, which degrade water quality. To study the impact of reservoir discharges upon fish populations we evaluated community composition and smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) movement along a temperature gradient and relative to the mining-impacted tributaries. The fish community did not differ with discharge events, but community structure varied with mining-impacted inputs. Smallmouth bass avoided areas associated with mining-influenced inputs. Free-base ("crack") cocaine smoking continues to be a popular method of drug abuse in the United States. Pyrolysis of free-base cocaine readily occurs, forming primarily benzoic acid and anhydroecgonine methyl ester (AEME), which structurally contains an alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl functional group. This electrophilic structure is suggestive of chemical reactivity with ubiquitously occurring cellular nucleophiles, such as glutathione. Glutathione adducts formed in vivo are metabolized to N-acetylcysteine derivatives by the enzymatically driven mercapturic acid pathway. AEME and its transesterification product in the presence of ethanol, anhydroecgonine ethyl ester (AEEE), were synthesized from cocaine hydrochloride. Transfection is an alternative laboratory method of hypovirus transmission that can be used to create hypovirulent strains. Results from a preliminary study at West Virginia University in 1998-99 indicated that recovery of hypovirulent isolates was similar between CHV1-infected anastomosed and transfected isolates. The objective of this research was to compare the two hypovirus acquisition methods in three experiments. The first study confirmed the performance of anastomosed and transfected isolates tested in a 1998-99 field study. Perhaps the most controversial aspect of federal water pollution law is wetland regulation. Wetlands are typically marshy or swampy areas with hydrologic soils and vegetation. Their ecological value is widely recognized, but wetlands often stand in the way of lucrative commercial development projects. Thus, the battle over the validity of federal wetland regulation is a classic fight between environmentalists and industry. The wetlands controversy is also paradigmatic of the perpetual struggle to define the constitutional limits to federal regulation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceptions of participants regarding the Alfabetizacion/Circulo de Arendizaje literacy program in Ciudad Eten, Chiclayo, Peru.

The sample population for the study consisted of 118 female participants. These women represented participants of the Alfabetizacion literacy program in 2004 and 1994 - 2003 program graduates. The oral survey questions were related to demographic factors of the participants (i.e. age, marital status, family size, level of income and class attendance), factors affecting participants’ perceptions of the importance of education, and reasons for participation in the literacy program. Rapid eye movements (REMs), traditionally measured using the electrooculogram (EOG), help to characterize active sleep in adults. In early infancy, however, they are not clearly expressed. Here we measured extraocular muscle activity in infant rats at 3 days of age (P3), P8 and P14-15 in order to assess the ontogeny of REMs and their relationship with other forms of sleep-related phasic activity. We found that the causal relationship between extraocular muscle twitches and REMs strengthened during the first two postnatal weeks, reflecting increased control of the extraocular muscles over eye movements. Vibrio cholerae causes diarrhea by colonizing the human small bowel and intoxicating epithelial cells. Colonization is a required step in pathogenesis, and strains defective for colonization are significantly attenuated. The best-characterized V. cholerae colonization factor is the toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP). It has been demonstrated that TCP is required for V. cholerae colonization in both humans and mice. TCP enhances bacterial interactions that allow microcolony formation and thereby promotes survival in the intestine. We have recently discovered that the TCP biogenesis apparatus also serves as a secretion system, mediating the terminal step in the extracellular secretion pathway of TcpF. TcpF was …

Surfactants in aqueous media can form a variety of microstructures such as micelles of various geometries, emulsions, microemulsions and vesicles. Cetyltrimethylammonium p-toluene sulfate (CTAT) has been found to cause large increases in solution viscosity in certain concentration ranges. This phenomenon has been ascribed to the formation of wormlike micelles. Using this, we have synthesized polystyrene nanofibers by emulsion polymerization in wormlike CTAT admicelles in the presence of added sodium chloride (NaCl). Polystyrene nanofibers approximately 3 µm in length and 20~ 60 nanometers in width, were created by emulsion polymerization at 50°C for ten hours using 2, 2’-azobis-isobutyrInitrile initiator. Aquatic invertebrates are affected by biotic as well as abiotic factors. Dissolved oxygen is one factor of water quality that has the potential to limit aquatic insect diversity in streams. Insects in the order Odonata in particular have been known to be ‘indicator species’ meaning that organisms in this order can only survive in healthy, undisturbed streams. This study compared dissolved oxygen levels and species richness as well as odonate larva abundance in ten sample sites in streams in the Tilarán mountain range. Forest fragmentation has been shown to decrease reproductive output for some species of dioecious plants. Chamaedorea pinnatifrons (Arecaceae) is a dioecious understory palm found in wet, tropical forests from Mexico to Bolivia. This study examined differences in ratios of fruiting to non-fruiting individuals of C. pinnatifrons in both continuous and fragmented forests in Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, in order to examine the effects of fragmentation on the species’ reproductive ability. Forest regeneration in abandoned pastures is often slower than in areas of natural disturbance. Lack of seed dispersers is often the major limiting factor. Shade trees left in pastures are potential perch sites and food sources for birds that act as seed dispersers. This study compared diversity and stem density of colonizing tree species under the crowns of Ficus tuerckheimii and Sideroxylon portoricense and compared change in diversity from a previous study measuring the same parameters at the same site. Ficus tuerckheimii had a significantly greater diversity of seedlings than Sideroxylon portoricense. For Ficus and Sideroxylon, significant negative correlation was …

Most insect diversity decreases with increased altitude. However, little is known about how coleopteran (beetle) diversity changes with respect to altitude in tropical habitats (Hanski and Cambefort 1991). Coleopterans were collected on the property of Estación Biológica Monteverde at three site locations at different elevations using pit-fall traps baited with mango, human scat, or soapy water. The number of individuals and number of species collected were analyzed and divided by morphology into species by comparison with the collection of the Estación Biológica. Cecropia spp. are common pioneer tree species in regenerating forest ecosystems and are often covered in trunk colonizers such as lichen, moss, and vines. As the tree ages and a more mature forest closes in, the microhabitat becomes darker and wetter, thus forcing species to change along a vertical species gradient as the succession of epiphytes tends more toward vascular plants. This study looks at epiphytic succession by measuring the percent lichen cover at a constant height on the trunks of Cecropia spp. It was hypothesized that percent lichen cover would decrease as tree diameter increased. The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of the Innovative Treatment Remediation Demonstration Program (ITRD) made technology recommendations after reviewing thirty in situ remediation technologies for implementation at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) to treat groundwater contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) and technetium-99 (Tc-99). The 1999 data used in the ITRD final report were considered to be obsolete as of the year 2004. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of prior cycling on running economy (RE) during the running portion of a simulated Olympic distance triathlon. Six triathletes and one duathlete participated in four consecutive laboratory trials: (1) maximal treadmill tests, (2) independent 40km cycling trial (IC), (3) independent 10km treadmill running (IR) and (4) 40km cycling (TC) followed by a 10km treadmill run (TR). The double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) activated protein kinase, PKR, is one of the several enzymes induced by interferons and a key molecule mediating the antiviral effects of interferons. PKR contain an N-terminal, double-stranded RNA binding domain (dsRBD), which has two tandem copies of the motifs (dsRBM I and dsRBM II). Upon binding to viral dsRNA, PKR is activated via autophosphorylation. Activated PKR has several substrates; one of the examples is eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 (eIF2a). The phosphorylation of eIF2a leads to the termination of cell growth by inhibiting protein synthesis in response to viral infection. The objective of this project …

U.S. use of force since 1945 has been significantly influenced by the perceived consequences of appeasing Hitler in the 1930s, and from the mid-1970s to 2001 by the chilling effect of the Vietnam War. As the United States approached its second war with Iraq, proponents cited the Munich analogy to justify the war, whereas opponents argued that the United States was risking another Vietnam. This thesis explored the extent of influence of culture on implicit theories of creativity among laypeople from the United States and Singapore, as well as the ethnic groups in Singapore - the Chinese, the Malays, and the Indians, in regard to adaptive and innovative styles of creativity as well as their own conceptions of creativity. Susceptibility to Cry3Bb1 toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was determined for western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, neonates from both laboratory and field populations collected from across the Corn Belt. Rootworm larvae were exposed to artificial diet treated with increasing Cry3Bb1 concentrations, and mortality and growth inhibition were evaluated after 4Ð7 d. The range of variation in Bt susceptibility indicated by growth inhibition was similar to that indicated by mortality. Although interpopulation variation in susceptibility was observed, the magnitude of the differences was comparable with the variability observed between generations of the same population. Relative flight behavior of methyl-parathion-resistant and -susceptible western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte populations, was studied as part of a larger effort to characterize the potential impact of insecticide resistance on adult life history traits and to understand the evolution and spread of resistance. A computer interfaced autograph was used to compare flight of resistant and susceptible individuals, and flight of resistant individuals with and without prior exposure to methyl-parathion. In each case, mean trivial and sustained flight durations were compared among treatments. In general, there were few differences in trivial or sustained flight characteristics as affected by beetle …
