Improved prediction of the transport and bioavailability of metals in contaminated sediments demands a better quantitative understanding of how metals partition between aqueous solutions and mineral phases. This research examines the partitioning of nickel in a contaminated aquifer from Grand Rapids, Ml. Contaminated aquifer sediments were examined using the five step Tessier et al. (1979) operationally defined sequential extraction procedure to determine the solid phase distribution of nickel in the aquifer sediments. Models used to guide remediation efforts at the contaminated site assume that Ni behavior can be predicted based on Ni adsorption onto ferrihydrite (HFO). Although sequential extraction results …

A Bioarchaeological Investigation Of Two Unmarked Graveyards In Bridgetown, Barbados, Christopher Crain

In 1996 and 1999 two previously unknown graveyards were discovered in separate sections of Bridgetown, Barbados. Emergency excavations of the sites recovered the skeletal material of at least thirty-two (MNI=32) individuals as well as a number of grave goods. While the artifacts were from the historical period there was continuing speculation as to the ancestry of the individuals interred within these graveyards. During the summer of 2004 the first preliminary osteological analysis of the skeletal material was conducted to identify the biological characteristics, including the ancestral affiliation, of these individuals. These interactions not only impact the species involved, but can also have a wide range of direct and indirect effects that resonate throughout the community. In Michigan trout streams, one of the main predators of benthic invertebrates is the mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdi) whose diet and selective predation may influence benthic invertebrate community structure. Carbonic anhydrase II (CA II) is a zinc metalloenzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. The role of this reaction in physiology has made it a target of many therapeutic approaches. Most CA II inhibitors currently known are sulfonamide-based and this is the only functional group incorporated into rationally designed CA II inhibitors. Thioxolone (6-hydroxy-1, 3-benzoxathiol-2-one), is a non-sulfonamide that has been found to have CA II inhibitory activity.

American law never reached a satisfying conclusion about public access to information on government operations. But recent events are prompting reconsideration. As our current system is reassessed, three shortfalls in past debates should be overcome. The first involves ignorance of foreign systems. Other democracies grapple with information access problems, and their recent experiments are illuminating. Indeed they expose two additional domestic weaknesses. One is a line we have drawn within constitutional law. State support of marriage should rest on more than the transformative power of marriage. This article responds to Professor Wilson by questioning whether marriage best promotes child well-being and whether child well-being alone is a sufficient justification to rest state support of marriage. Children of marital households are usually whiter, wealthier, and better educated. Thus, state support of marriage maximizes the welfare of already privileged children at the detriment of less privileged children. There is legitimacy to the conservative approach that goes beyond looking at the impact on people's welfare. This article responds to Professor Arneson by offering a different framework to investigate the underlying theoretical values behind appropriate state policies regarding private relationships. Neither the prioritarian consequentialist, nor the lockean libertarian captures the other side of the marriage debate, that is, the traditional ideal. The prohibition of same-sex marriage is no more defensible than the prohibition on other marital forms. This article enhances Professor Calhoun's proposal for polygamy by offering another reason to advocate pluralistic conceptions of marriage. If marriage is an institution focused on child-rearing and taking care of ailing partners, then polygamy offers a strong argument for state advocated pluralistic marital forms. The author concludes that Calhoun provides a necessary broader concept of marriage by suggesting a pluralistic approach as to what should count as a legally recognized marriage.

Thus far, there has been no coherent, secular elucidation of the opposition to same-sex marriage. This article attempts to develop a consistent position by applying the traditionalist and rationalist views of Edmund Burke and Michael Oakeshott to the same-sex marriage debate, while questioning whether traditional marriage should be changed to include same-sex unions. Burke and Oakeshott represent the conservative approach that advocates an adherence to tradition in the face of change. Through developing this conservative approach, this article seeks a heuristic, in the form of legislative change reflecting a majority view, for when society should accept change. The interaction between GnRH and its receptor on gonadotropes within the anterior pituitary gland represents a central point for regulation of reproduction. Additionally, the close proximity of the porcine GnRHR gene to a quantitative trait locus for ovulation rate makes it a positional candidate for genes influencing ovulation rate. We isolated the GnRHR gene promoter from three lines of swine (Control, Index and Meishan) with different ovulation rates. Transient transfection of gonadotrope-derived αT3-1 cells with vectors containing approximately 5000 bp of GnRHR gene promoter fused to the cDNA encoding luciferase resulted in a 2- to 4-fold difference in luciferase activity …

(1998) looked at prosocial behavior toward strangers via responses to wrong-number messages on a telephone answering machine and found a higher than anticipated prosocial response. However, additional research was required in order to determine whether or not manipulation of gender and ethnicity would have produced different results. OBJECTIVE: Impaired basal nitric oxide release is associated with a number of cardiovascular disorders including hypertension, arterial spasm, and myocardial infarction. We determined whether basal endothelial nitric oxide release is reduced in otherwise healthy overweight and obese adult humans.
RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Seventy sedentary adults were studied: 32 normal weight (BMI/m(2)), 24 overweight (BMI > or = 25 < 30 kg/m(2)), and 14 obese (BMI > or = 30 kg/m(2)). Forearm blood flow (FBF) responses to intra-arterial infusions of N(g)-monomethyl-L-arginine (5 mg/min), a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, were used as an index of basal nitric oxide release.

Bat foraging behavior has been shown to be affected by the presence of predator models near feeding sites. A previous study found significantly lower visitation at feeders with a model owl or snake next to it but no difference was found between the two predator models. In this study, foraging behavior was observed by recording bat visitations to hummingbird feeders with different treatments. The treatments consisted of a control feeder and feeders with either a shoe or a snake model nearby. The present study sought to investigate how alcohol, retention time, and presentation of stimuli lineups impact the rate of correct and incorrect identifications within an eyewitness recognition task. Sixty (60) male participants were divided into 4 different alcohol or placebo conditions. Two of the conditions are such that the participants were blind to what they were being given (alcohol or a placebo fruit drink). The final two conditions were such that the participants were either told falsely that they were receiving alcohol (misled placebo) or truthfully that they were only getting a fruit drink (informed placebo). Thyroid nodules are frequently found in association with Graves9 disease. Papillary carcinoma can arise from these nodules. We report a 65-year-old gentleman who presented with classical features of Graves disease. Technetium 99 scintigraphy revealed diffuse goiter with a cold nodule over the isthmus. Papillary thyroid cancer was suggested by the enlarging thyroid gland, and by the presence of cold nodule, and was proven by fine needle aspiration biopsy of this nodule. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology of thyroid specimen after total thyroidectomy, which also showed local invasion; metastatic work up revealed pulmonary and liver metastasis. Labyrinth  fishes  of  the  families  Anabantidae,  Belontiidae,Helostomatidae,  and  Osphronemidae  comprise the  tradi-tional  anabantoids,  a  group  of  about  80  relatively  small African  and  southeast  Asian  species (Linke  1991).  Many of  the  anabantoids  are  popular  with  aquarium  hobbyists because of their interesting reproductive behaviours, with males of most species brooding eggs in their mouths or in floating bubble nests (Vevers 1980; Linke 1991; Axelrod and Vorderwinkler 1995; Mills 2000). Interactions with co-factors provide a means by which HOX proteins exert specificity. To identify candidate protein interactors of HOXA13, we created and screened an E11.5–E12.5, distal limb bud yeast two-hybrid prey library. Among the interactors, we isolated the BMP-signaling effector Smad5, which interacted with the paralogous HOXD13 but not with HOXA11 or HOXA9, revealing unique interaction capabilities of the AbdB-like HOX proteins. Using deletion mutants, we determined that the MH2 domain of Smad5 is necessary for HOXA13 interaction.

This is the first report demonstrating an interaction between HOX proteins and the MH2 domain of Smad proteins. HOXA13 and HOXD13 …

The diversity of planktonic organisms was studied for seven months in Lake Wapalanne and Lake Ocquittunk (Stokes State Forest), Sussex County, New Jersey. Relative abundance and species diversity were studied as well as water quality including parameters: temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and depth of lakes. The data of seasonal changes in abundance of organisms and water quality was compared between both lakes.

The purposes of this qualitative study were to discover what influences collaboration had on an interdisciplinary team practicing in a rural Midwestern long-term -care facility, to discover what factors influence collaboration, and to discover what barriers can hinder collaboration for the interdisciplinary team practicing in this facility. In this descriptive, qualitative study, eleven semi-structured in-depth interviews were completed, and a constant comparative method of data analysis was used.

Biosensors are used to connect the chemical and physical worlds through the use of a transducer, allowing for quick detection of numerous biological agents. A new biosensor being developed, the resonant optical waveguide biosensor, uses power transfer between two optical waveguides to detect the presence of an antigen. The condition for power transfer is extremely sensitive to changes in index of refraction and allows the biosensor to have a high sensitivity to the antigen presence.
