The Constitutional Rhetoric Of White Innocence, Cecil J. Hunt

This article discusses the Supreme Court’s use of the rhetoric of white innocence in deciding racially inflected claims of constitutional shelter. It argues that the Court’s use of this rhetoric reveals that it has adopted a distinctly white-centered-perspective which reveals only a one-sided view of racial reality and thus distorts its ability to accurately appreciate the true nature of racial reality in contemporary America. This article examines the Court’s habit of consistently choosing a white-centered-perspective in constitutional race cases by looking at the Court’s use of the rhetoric of white innocence first in the context of the Court’s concern with …

This paper focuses on developmental and pedagogical/sociological issues related to a doctoral level research methodology course. This course is delivered in two formats, resident (face-to-face) and distance (web-based on Blackboard). Pedagogical, sociological, course development, course delivery, issues and challenges for both formats are discussed. An annotated bibliography is also included.

Testing of usability could perhaps be more accurately described as testing of learnability. We know more about the problems of novice users than we know of the problems of experienced users. To understand how these problems differ, and to understand how usability problems change as users change from novice to experienced, we conducted a longitudinal study of usability among middle-school teachers creating Web sites. The study looked at the use both the use of documentation and the underlying software, tracking the causes and extent of user frustration over eight weeks. We validated a categorization scheme for frustration episodes. We found …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The gadolinium(III) complex of S-SSSS-NO₂BnDOTMA exhibits water exchange kinetics that are optimal for use in high relaxivity or targeted contrast agents. However, the synthesis of this ligand is hampered by the steric encumbrance imparted upon the cyclen ring by the nitrobenzyl substituent. A relatively simple modification has been used to enable the synthesis of larger quantities of a bifunctional ligand that retains similar fast water exchange properties. The gadolinium complex of S-SSS-NO₂BnDO3MA-1A is shown to retain the rapid water exchange kinetics characteristic of a twisted square antiprismatic (TSAP) …

Crystalline colloidal arrays (CCA) which have been encapsulated in a polymer matrix to produce more robust polymerized crystalline colloidal arrays (PCCA) are provided. The PCCA's of the present invention can be in the form of a hydrogel which can be compatible for use with a biological system. The polymer matrix of the PCCA is formed of polymerized poly(ethylene glycol) based monomer units which can provide a desired functionality to the PCCA. The PCCA can be formed to exhibit a photonic bandgap at a certain wavelength. The photonic bandgap can be capable of shifting upon some form of environmental stimulation rendering …

Over the years, science achievement scores in the United States have been declining despite the movement towards reforming science and math education. A review of the literature reveals that the issue of the quality of textbooks used in science education is not often mentioned. In this paper, the author evaluates the quality of textbooks used in science education in four schools and discusses the findings relative to curriculum reform. The project will be focused on the exploration of the ways that the teachers use to deal with the deaf students that struggle with an additional disability in form of Attention Deficit Disorder. ABSTRACT On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked America without warning, killing 2752 in New York City alone. The President declared war on terrorism and pledged to use all resources at United States’ disposal to conquer the enemy. On October 26, 2001, President Bush signed into law the USA PATRIOT ACT, giving the law enforcement officials expansive powers and security agencies increased resources to fight terrorism, at home and abroad.

A cursory review of the legal literature shows that the USA PATRIOT ACT was “rushed” passed Congress by the Bush administration without following the usual legislative procedure. Throughout the entire legislative …
