Bioconductor Project Working Papers

With many different investigators studying the same disease and with a strong commitment to publish supporting data in the scientific community, there are often many different datasets available for any given disease. Hence there is substantial interest in finding methods for combining these datasets to provide better and more detailed understanding of the underlying biology. We consider the synthesis of different microarray data sets using a random effects paradigm and demonstrate how relatively standard statistical approaches yield good results. We identify a number of important and substantive areas which require further investigation.

The Gundalow Company (a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization) sponsors maritime history and environmental education programs for school groups and the public onboard the replica gundalow Captain Edward Adams from May through November in 12-15 riverfront locations in the Piscataqua Region. Funding from the NHEP in 2005 supported the Gundalow Company’s efforts to successfully add Dover and Exeter to the towns visited by the gundalow between May and November. While the gundalow was in Dover and Exeter, collaborative educational programs were offered onboard to a total of nearly 3,000 people including youth and teen groups as well as the public during community …

Moose Mountains Regional Greenways (MMRG) undertook a comprehensive public outreach campaign designed to educate landowners, community leaders and the public about the importance of and tools for preserving critical natural resources within the MMRG region. In the process, MMRG also hoped to enhance regional awareness of and appreciation for our organization and its mission. The initiative included workshops, mailings, media outreach, information delivered online, and printed brochures and handouts. This comprehensive, targeted strategy was implemented in four MMRG communities: New Durham, Middleton, Brookfield, and Wakefield.

Candia’s concern over local development, its rapid growth and encroaching sprawl, and the resulting negative impacts on the natural environment led them to consider taking more serious steps towards environmental protection. This resulted in a two-pronged initiative: a land conservation program, and a survey to collect baseline data about their groundwater resources. With many of the lands overlying identified aquifers not permanently protected, conservation of these lands is critical for preserving the integrity of Candia’s current and future water supplies. Single Subject Rules And Public Choice Theory, Michael Gilbert

Despite generating thousands of cases on important public issues, the single subject rule remains a source of confusion and inconsistency. The root of the problem lies in the inability to define the term “subject” using legal doctrine. This paper reexamines the single subject rule through the lens of public choice theory and finds that its purposes are wrongheaded. Logrolling is not necessarily harmful, and improving political transparency requires legislative compromises to be packaged together rather than spread across multiple acts. Riding is not a form of logrolling but an analytically distinct and more threatening practice. This analysis yields a precise, …

While internally displaced Americans were piled into an unequipped New Orleans sports stadium, the question on everyone’s lips was: where were the Louisiana National Guard and its high-water trucks when Hurricane Katrina struck? One answer, obviously, was that at least a third of the Guard’s human and mechanical resources were deployed to Iraq. Anti-war protesters demonstrating in Washington on September 24, 2005 as a new storm battered the Gulf coast turned the question into a new slogan: “Make Levees, Not War.”
