Redescripción De La Morfología Larval Externa De Dos Especies Del Grupo De Leptodactylus Fuscus (Anura, Leptodactylidae), José A. Langone, Rafael O. De Sá

Re-description of the larval external morphology of two species of the Leptodactylus fuscus group (Anura, Leptodactylidae). The larvae of Leptodactylus gracilis (D’Orbigny y Bibron, 1840) and L. mystacinus Bumeister, 1861 are re-described and compared with previous descriptions noting intraspecific variation in oral disc characteristics (arrangement of papillae and rows of cornified teeth). The external morphological analysis of larvae of the Leptodactylus fuscus group suggest that the lack of comparable descriptions among species, as well as the lack of analyses of their intraspecific variation, limits the use of larval characteristics for diagnostic purposes.

This Article examines the conditions under which acting as if one has a particular legal status is sufficient to secure that status in the eyes of the law. Legal determinations of common-law marriage, functional parenthood, and racial identity share striking similarities to adverse possession law – these doctrines confer legal status on those who are merely acting as if they have that legal status. In each case, the elements of a legal claim are strikingly similar: physical proximity, notoriety and publicity, a claim of right, consistent and continuous behavior, and public acquiescence. Ellen Ripley of the Alien series of films, Sarah Connor of the Terminator series, and Lindsey Brigman of The Abyss are examples of a special category of female role in Hollywood – the female action hero. To varying degrees of success, the three characters mentioned above defy the principal dilemma filmmakers seem to have in creating a character that can reconcile the presumably mutually exclusive aspects of cast iron bitch and traditional patriarchal societal views of femininity. The Star Trek series, which have been both praised for radical inclusiveness and criticized for their neo-conservative agendas, de-essentialize identity, gender, and sexual orientation through their depictions of the Trill, an alien race in which humanoids join with symbionts, slug-like creatures each of which lives in the abdominal cavity of its host, with whom it then shares a single fused consciousness. Hosts are selected independently of their sex, so that a symbiont dwells alternatively inside males and females; each new host, as well as the symbiont, is heir to the memories of all previous hosts.

This article suggests ways in which the common law can integrate concepts of ecosystem services to fulfill pragmatic objectives of common law doctrine. Rather than requiring a radical departure from traditional common law doctrine as is often proposed in environmental literature on the common law, ecosystem services can fold seamlessly into existing common law principles as a source of new knowledge and changed circumstances.

The Survival Of The Central American Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri Oerstedi): The Habitat And Behavior Of A Troop On The Burica Peninsula In A Conservation Context, Liana Burghardt

The conservation status of Central American Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri oerstedi) on the far southern coast of Peninsula Burica in Panama was assessed over the course of a 13 day study period. Four troops of squirrel monkeys (67 individuals) were located on the southern coast of Peninsula Burica. Using information from local sources it can be estimated that up to 7 troops (157 individuals) live in the 7-8 km2 study site. These troops are sharing an estimated 80 ha of habitat which compared to past studies is a fairly low amount of habitat.

This paper provides an intimate look at the rural female body and its nuances – aesthetics, self-perception, sexuality, maternity, and purity. Based on this research conducted in the rural village of Loutichina, it seems apparent that almost unrealistic demands are traditionally made on the rural female body, most noticeably the demands of reproduction and physical labor. Local perceptions and attitudes towards maternity and sexuality are also explored, as is the way in which the rural female body undergoes basic biological changes and cycles and is simultaneously affected by surrounding social and cultural pressures. Three islands: Betsiboko, Jamanjaky Be and Jamanjaky Roa, off the coast of Morombe in Southwest Madagascar were visited in November 2005 to verify the existence and evaluate the health of wedge-tailed shearwater (Puffinus pacificus) colonies that were described by Otto Appert in the 1960’s (Hawkins (a) 2005; Hawkins (b) 2005). These three islands experience varying degrees of human use, ranging from low: light human predation on shearwater chicks, to high: the presence of domestic animals, collecting fuelwood on the island and more intensive harvesting of chicks. The article re-examines racial and ethnic identity within the context of pedagogical attempts to instill a positive white identity in white students who are conscious of the history of white racism and white privilege. The paper draws heavily from whiteness studies and developmental cognitive science in arguing (against Henry Giroux and Stuart Hall) that a positive notion of white identity, however postmodern its construction, is an oxymoron, since whiteness designates less a cultural/ethnic ethos and meaningful way of life than a pathological structure of privilege and narrowminded cognitive habitus.

The primary objective of the project described here was to identify needed and used organizational resources for a successful CWO. This article reports key informant perceptions of Pennsylvania Community Watershed Organizations (CWO). Utilizing snowball sampling, 24 people were interviewed. The results indicate CWOs are in need of organizational development training, mentoring, and assessment. Extension has a history of providing these resources to communities. Therefore, CWOs represent a potential new market for Extension.

Regret is often symptomatic of the defective decisions associated with temporary preference problems. It may also help overcome these defects. Outcome regret can modify the relative utilities of different payoffs. Process regret can motivate search for better decision processes or trap-evading strategies. Heightened regret may thus be functional for control of these self-defeating choices.

Stem borers are the most important maize pests in the humid forest zone of Cameroon. Field trials were conducted in the long and short rainy seasons of 2002 and 2003 to assess the level of damage and yield reductions caused by stem borers in monocropped maize and in maize intercropped with non-host plants such as cassava, cowpea and soybean. The intercrops were planted in two spatial arrangements, i.e. alternating hills or alternating rows. Since the mid-1900’s, invasive aquatic weeds have been a significant problem in many of the lakes of the Clatsop Plains on the northern Oregon Coast. Weeds interfere with beneficial uses, such as boating, fishing and swimming, and have dramatically altered the chemical and biological features of the lakes. In 1994, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) added three of the lakes, Cullaby, Smith and Sunset, to the 303 (d) list of water quality impaired waters, due to the presence of the invasive aquatic weeds. In this paper, we propose a Distance-based Sequence Indexing Method (DSIM) for indexing and searching genome databases. Borrowing the idea of video compression, we compress the genomic sequence database around a set of automatically selected reference words, formed from high-frequency data substrings and substrings in past queries. The compression captures the distance of each non-reference word in the database to some reference word. At runtime, a query is processed by comparing its substrings with the compressed data strings, through their distances to the reference words. A stable micro-plasma jet in air was generated from a direct current discharge between two molybdenum electrodes (0.25 mm thick) that were separated by an alumina insulator of the same thickness. The after-glow plasma jet was generated by blowing air through the space between the electrodes. A change from laminar to turbulent flow was observed at a gas flow rate of 140 ml/min. The length of the plasma jet increased with flow rate in the laminar mode to approximately 15 mm and decreased in the turbulent mode.

Phylogenetic analysis is an integral part of biological research. As the number of sequenced genomes increases, available data sets are growing in number and size. Several algorithms have been proposed to handle these larger data sets. A family of algorithms known as disc covering methods (DCMs), have been selected by the NSF funded CIPRes project to boost the performance of existing phylogenetic algorithms. Recursive Iterative Disc Covering Method 3 (Rec-I-DCM3), recursively decomposes the guide tree into subtrees, executing a phylogenetic search on the subtree and merging the subtrees, for a set number of iterations. Introduction

The success of vascular stents in the restoration of blood flow is limited by restenosis. Recent data generated from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models suggest that the vascular geometry created by an implanted stent causes local alterations in wall shear stress (WSS) that are associated with neointimal hyperplasia (NH). Foreshortening is a potential limitation of stent design that may affect stent performance and the rate of restenosis. The angle created between axially aligned stent struts and the principal direction of blood flow varies with the degree to which the stent foreshortens after implantation.

Background: Rituximab has been used to treat relapsed low-grade or advanced non-Hodgkin's lymphoma since 1997, targeting the CD20 antigen expressed by B cells. Single-agent rituximab therapy is safe and well tolerated. Recurrences showing a loss of CD20 expression following rituximab therapy have been reported.

Methods: Four patients with CD20-positive cutaneous B-cell lymphoma received rituximab therapy with subsequent recurrences. The biopsies were assessed for cytoplasmic CD20 expression; CD20 messenger RNA was also assessed where tissue was available.

Results: Cutaneous relapses occurring within 1.5–3 months following the last dose of rituximab were CD20 negative. In three cases, subsequent relapses showed renewed expression …
