Data Summary From The Tampa Bay Interagency Seagrass Monitoring Program Through Year 2004, Walt Avery, Roger Johansson

Reports

Results regarding seagrass species abundance, distribution, and zonation over time are presented for the 1997-2004 period in Hillsborough Bay (HB, Figures 16-27) and the 1998-2004 period for Old Tampa Bay (OTB, Figures 3-14), Middle Tampa Bay (MTB, Figures 29-41), Lower Tampa Bay, including Terra Ceia Bay (LTB, Figures 43-57), and Boca Ciega Bay (BCB, Figures 59-69). For each transect, results are presented in a graphic format illustrating annual species composition, abundance, and distribution. Seagrass abundance is presented as percent coverage within a square meter using the Braun Blanquet coverage class system.

Alteration of the Great Plains landscape during the past two centuries has permitted scores of weedy plants to flourish and expand their ranges, often profoundly affecting the ecology and economy of the region. As their numbers have increased, weed identification has become progressively more challenging. More than 600 of the 3,600 species of flowering plants and ferns documented in the Great Plains were not here 200 years ago. This book, updating and replacing Weeds of Nebraska and the Great Plains (1994), intends to enable users to "identify or confirm the identity of the most important weeds in the Great Plains."

Language Skills Of Elementary-Aged Children With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Gregory Benner

A cross-sectional design was used to assess the language skills and prevalence of language disorders among 84 randomly selected public school children (K-5) receiving special education services for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). The mean receptive language standard score fell in the nonclinical range, whereas the mean total and expressive standard scores fell in the clinical range. The prevalence rates of total, expressive, and receptive disorders among children with EBD were 54%, 55%, and 42%, respectively. Approximately two-thirds of children experienced a language disorder (i.e., total, expressive, and/or receptive). Half of those experiencing a language disorder met clinical criteria in …

The Platte River has changed from a nearly treeless prairie river to a heavily forested river. These habitat changes have likely benefited many woodland birds, but have harmed other migratory birds such as cranes. In response to this impact on migratory birds, conservation groups implemented a tree-clearing program to enhance habitat for these species. This practice is not without controversy because of concerns about its effect on woodland birds. The goal of this study was to determine the composition and abundance of breeding birds that use these forests and discuss the potential impacts of tree clearing on woodland birds. Surveys …

Background: Cell sorting has a history dating back approximately 40 years. The main limitation has been that, although flow cytometry is a science, cell sorting has been an art during most of this time. Recent advances in assisting technologies have helped to decrease the amount of expertise necessary to perform sorting. Methods: Droplet-based sorting is based on a controlled disturbance of a jet stream dependent on surface tension. Sorting yield and purity are highly dependent on stable jet break-off position. System pressures and orifice diameters dictate the number of droplets per second, which is the sort rate limiting step because …

This is the rousing story of a rebel university professor who has spent a 36- year career passionately committed to teaching science students to be scientists rather than lecturing to them about science. Janovy's teaching experiences both at the Cedar Point Biological Station (CPBS) on the south shore of Lake Ogallala in Keith County, Nebraska, and at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's "city" campus can be described as an ongoing quest to bring the wealth of science in its context from Cedar Point to the "pedagogical poverty" of the large lecture hall setting in Lincoln.

Swift foxes historically occurred throughout the short and mixed-grass prairies of the Great Plains. In February 1992, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) was petitioned by a private citizen to list the swift fox as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. The USFWS concluded that listing of the swift fox was warranted but precluded because of higher listing priorities. In 2002, the USFWS removed the swift fox from candidate status.

Named for the state where it was discovered, Cicindela Nebraskana Casey is among the rarest insects in Nebraska. Although this beetle was described in 1909, only nine specimens had been collected in Nebraska in the 95 years before we conducted surveys in 2003 and 2004 in the extreme western portion of the state. Because of scant records, little was known about the Nebraska populations relative to populations of the species in the remainder of the western United States. We discovered two populations in Sioux and Scotts Bluff counties. We review the taxonomy of this species and document its habitat and …

The purpose of our project was to investigate well-functioning adolescents to identify familial influences that may account for their positive developmental outcomes and healthy life choices. A family systems perspective was used to conceptualize this project. More than 300 teenagers were surveyed about family influences on adolescent outcomes. Results indicated that teen religiosity, parental warmth, parental monitoring, and a low occurrence of stressful life events were related to teen depression, participation in risky behaviors, and parental-teen conflict. General conclusions were drawn about the importance of the family environment on teen behavior and the usefulness of a systems point of view …

This volume culminates the typical five-year atlas study of breeding birds in a specific state, in this case one well within the Great Plains. Oklahoma abuts parts of five other states of that region and, as such, shares its avifauna with them. The obviously well-funded effort included a full-time seasonal employee each year to survey blocks and enter data, each one racking up an impressive 10,000 miles per season to reach blocks not covered by volunteers. Nonetheless, like most of those before it, this atlas project had to rely upon volunteers to accomplish much of the field work.

In times of terror and tension, civil liberties are at their greatest peril. Nowadays, no individual rights are more in jeopardy than the freedoms of speech and religion. This is true particularly for followers of Islam, whose leaders have become increasingly radical in both their preaching and practice. "Kill the Jews!" and "Kill the Americans!" are chants heard regularly in many Middle Eastern mosques, as frightful echoes of the fatwa are issued by today's quintessential terrorist, Osama bin Laden. Biodemography Of A Long-Lived Tephritid: Reproduction And Longevity In A Large Cohort Of Female Mexican Fruit Flies, Anastrepha Ludens, James R. Carey, Pablo Liedo, Hans-Georg Müller, Jane-Ling Wang, Damla Senturke, Lawrence G. Harshman

Age of sexual maturity, daily and lifetime reproductive rates, and life span were recorded in a laboratory cohort of Mexican fruit flies consisting of over 1100 females maintained individually. The results revealed that, relative to the medfly, the Mexfly is slower maturing (14 vs 17 days), more fecund (1400 vs 650–1100 eggs/female), and longer lived (50 vs 35 days). The results reinforced the generality of several earlier findings on the medfly including the deceleration of mortality at older ages and the weakness of the correlation between the rate of egg laying at early ages and both subsequent reproduction and remaining …

Inherent limitations of traditional lithography have prompted the search for means of achieving self-assembly of nano-scale structures and networks for the next generation of electronic and photonic devices. The nanowire, the basic building block of a nanocircuit, has recently become the focus of intense research. Reports on nanowire synthesis and assembly have appeared in the scientific literature, which include Vapor-Liquid-Solid mechanism, template-based electrochemical fabrication, solvothermal or wet chemistry, and assembly by fluid alignment or microchannel networks. Fluorescent sensing systems offer the potential for minimally invasive monitoring with implantable devices, but they require carrier technologies that provide suitable immobilization, accessibility, and biocompatibility while maintaining adequate response characteristics. Towards the development of this goal, a general design of a biosensor with the capability of detecting different metabolites was investigated. The approach is based on the encapsulation of a competitive binding assay in microcapsules and monitoring the changes in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in the presence of analyte. The term “agroecology” is used to describe the sustainable design and management of agricultural systems by the application of ecological concepts and principles. The resulting agroecosystems, often practiced by indigenous or poor farmers in marginal environments without access to external technologies, are systems of food production that integrate cultivated crops into surrounding ecosystems. The Naso-Teribe, an indigenous community of approximately 3,800 individuals living in the forests of western Panama, practice a complex agroecological system. Molt Strategies And Age Differences In Migration Timing Among Autumn Landbird Migrants In Southwestern Idaho, Jay D. Carlisle, Gregory S. Kaltenecker, David L. Swanson

Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations

Intraspecific patterns of autumn migration timing are not well known, particularly in the western United States. Here, we (1) describe autumn migration timing and age ratios of landbird migrants in southwestern Idaho, (2) examine differences in timing among age and sex classes, and (3) demonstrate how prebasic molt strategies affect migration timing differences between age classes. As a group, Neotropical migrants were most common from late July through early September, whereas temperate migrants were most common from mid-September into early October. Proportion of hatch-year birds was 74.5% for all migrants combined and ranged from 33.3% to 100% for individual species. …
