The Role Of Adult Expectations On The Recovery Of Sexually Abused Children, Haig Kouyoumdjian, Andrea R. Perry, David J. Hansen
The Role Of Adult Expectations On The Recovery Of Sexually Abused Children, Haig Kouyoumdjian, Andrea R. Perry, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Child sexual abuse is a disturbingly prevalent problem that has continued to receive increased attention in the United States. Because there is substantial variability in how sexual abuse impacts children, it is important to examine potential mediating variables, including the ways in which child and family factors contribute to children’s recovery. One of the most extensively researched family variables has been parental support, and this research has demonstrated a positive relationship between parental support and children’s functioning following sexual abuse. Another family variable that likely infl uences parent–child interactions and children’s recovery is parental expectations. Although adults’ expectations about children …

Comorbid Anxiety And Depression: Do They Cluster As Distinct Groups In Youth?, Melinda Cannon
Comorbid Anxiety And Depression: Do They Cluster As Distinct Groups In Youth?, Melinda Cannon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
One of the most common pairs of co-occurring psychological disorders in children and adolescents is anxiety and depression. This high frequency of co-occurrence has led to research examining the structure of anxiety and depression, specifically the shared and unique aspects of these syndromes. The tripartite model accounts for the overlap between the disorders by suggesting that they are related because they share the feature of negative affect or general psychological distress. The model further proposes that they can be differentiated by their unique features of physiological hyperarousal (anxiety) and low positive affect (depression). Factor analytic research has shown that anxious …

Partnerships for Children and Families Project
This report highlights results from our study of three innovative child welfare programs in Ontario attempting to modify front line child protection practice. These programs endeavor to deliver child welfare services in ways that promote greater accessibility and acceptability of services for families, provide increased levels of assistance to families, afford a better understanding of daily living circumstances of children and families, and engage the community in protecting children. Study results confirm that the three programs were successful in accomplishing these goals. Parents’, service providers’, and community members’ perceptions of these programs showcase the positive helping relationships and community partnerships …

Idaho 4-H Impact Study, Jeff Goodwin, Cyndi Barnett, Michele Pike, Joey Peutz
Journal of Extension
A study measured the impact that the 4-H experience has on the quality of life of young people. Data were collected from 5th, 7th, and 9th grade students in Idaho. Students were selected from four randomly selected schools in each of the 16 randomly selected counties across the state. There were 3,601 surveys returned from 53 schools. Youngsters who have participated in 4-H for 2 years or more are less likely to engage in "at-risk" behaviors such as drinking alcohol, shoplifting, drug use, damaging property, or smoking cigarettes than their non- 4‑H classmates.

Wonderwise 4-H: Women in Science Learning Kits, recently included in the National 4-H Curriculum Collection and widely tested by 4-H leaders, have positively affected youths' perspectives on science, scientists, and scientific work. Adult leaders who used the multi-media, inquiry-based Wonderwise 4-H kits completed a Web survey describing the impact of the kits on youth. It indicated that the kits increased youth's interest and understanding of science, broadened their view of scientists, and opened their eyes to the possibility of science in their own futures. More information about Wonderwise 4-H and downloadable activities are available at .

Life Skills Development In Youth: Impact Research In Action, Christy Fitzpatrick, Karen Hatch Gagne, Ron Jones, Jennifer Lobley
Life Skills Development In Youth: Impact Research In Action, Christy Fitzpatrick, Karen Hatch Gagne, Ron Jones, Jennifer Lobley
Journal of Extension
Developing life skills is a key element of 4-H programming, but research on the impact of 4-H on life skill development is minimal. 4-H alumni and volunteers were surveyed to explore the question "Does involvement in 4-H Youth Development programs help youth learn and use specific life skills?" 4-H alumni identified life skills learned through 4-H participation from a list of choices and in an open-ended format. Volunteers agreed that life skills were learned, although their assessment of specific skills differed from that of alumni. Findings indicate that long-term impacts of 4-H membership exist and can be measured.

Occupational Stress In Child Protection Social Workers, Kristina M. Narcum
Occupational Stress In Child Protection Social Workers, Kristina M. Narcum
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine if social workers in a child protection agency report greater levels of stress than individuals working in other professions. Paper-and-pencil versions of the Pressure Management Indicator (PMI) questionnaire were distributed to all participants as a measure of occupational stress. Participants' responses were analyzed using an independent samples t-test to examine whether there was a statistically significant difference between the responses of the two groups. There were significant findings in nine out of twenty-four subscales of the PMI. The results from these areas show that the social workers feel more insecure about …
