Keeping The Music Alive: Using The "Grief And Hope Box" With Adult Offenders With Co-Occurring Mental Health And Substance Use Issues, Robert Gee, Paul R. Springer, George Bitar, Faith Drew, Chad Graff
Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications
Individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder (COD) present unique challenges for counselors. When individuals are incarcerated, they suffer unique forms of losses, including the loss and grief of their family members. In addition, they often struggle with stigma and cultural stereotypes that are oppressive and devastating. The purpose of this manuscript is to help counselors and clients access creativity in a manner that facilitates client self-disclosure about grief and loss related issues, leading to a more coherent personal narrative, increased social integration, and enhanced psychological and physiological health.

The Relationship Between Teen Mothers And Academic Achievement, Nichole M. Archer

In recent years there has been a growing public, professional, and scientific concern about the effects of teenage pregnancy on young women and their offspring (Fergusson & Woodward, 2000). This study aims to identify the root causes for this public concern. The aim of this qualitative study was to determine what factors influenced the level of academic achievement teen mothers accomplished. This study examined services teen mothers accessed during their schooling from the community and schools. Family and work experiences were also looked at in this study. The purpose of this study was to examine early warning signs of academic …

Report From The National Lgbtq Students Of Color Summit, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
I've always imagined finding a space where gender is not assumed, where women are undeniably and understandably attracted to each other, and where men embrace without fear. I found this space at the National Summit for LGBTQ Students of Color on the day of my 22nd birthday, January 15th, 2005. Over two nights and three days, the United States Student Association hosted a national summit filled with grassroots organizing workshops, "how-tos" for your campus, methods on how to challenge homophobia from other student groups while still building alliances, and late night dialogues on art and freedom of expression.

Can University/Community Collaboration Create Spaces For Aboriginal Reconciliation? Case Study Of The Healing Of The Seven Generations And Four Directions Community Projects And Wilfrid Laurier University, Ginette Lafrenière, Lamine Diallo, Donna Dubie, Lou Henry
Business Technology Management
In this article, the authors attempt to illustrate how two Aboriginal community-based projects were conceptualized and developed through the collaborative efforts of four individuals who believed in the merits of a project aimed at survivors and intergenerational survivors of the residential school system as well as Aboriginal people in trouble with the law. Drawing upon a small body of literature on university/community collaboration, the authors illustrate the importance of meaningful collaboration between universities and communities in order to enhance a mutually beneficial relationship conducive to community-engaged scholarship. Through an examination of the case study of the Healing of The Seven …
Photographing Fingerprints: Data Collection And State Surveillance, Jonathan Finn
Photographing Fingerprints: Data Collection And State Surveillance, Jonathan Finn
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This paper examines fingerprint identification as a mode of state surveillance. Drawing on but critiquing the work of Simon Cole, it argues that the technique yielded a greater, more pervasive form of state surveillance by giving rise to new practices of data collection. This paper also highlights the photograph’s role in fingerprint identification to argue for an essential transformation in law enforcement and surveillance practices announced by the intersection of fingerprinting and photography at the turn of the twentieth century. In contrast to traditional forms of visual surveillance, the collaboration of fingerprint identification and photography extended the surveillance gaze of …
