Fantasy, Vision, And Metaphor - Three Tracks To Teachers Minds, Dorit Tubin Sep 2005

Fantasy, Vision, And Metaphor - Three Tracks To Teachers Minds, Dorit Tubin

The Qualitative Report

This paper explores how the three concepts of vision, metaphor, and fantasy serve educational research for a better understanding of teachers’ minds regarding educational issues. Drawing upon data based on a review of the literature, the following has been found: a semantic comparison showed that the concepts were similar in their abilities to create visual images and function as communication media, but differed in origin, time orientation, reality reflection, activity orientation, and consensus creation. Empirical findings demonstrated the importance of question formulation, the researcher’s position, and the scope of the study. In conclusion, the paper proposes how the different concepts …

Lessons From The Swiss Cheese Map, Shari Motro Sep 2005

Lessons From The Swiss Cheese Map, Shari Motro

Law Faculty Publications

Professor Motro recounts experiences gained during the 1995 Oslo II Israeli/Palestinian peace talks as an illustration of the impact that mapmakers can have on negotiators. Color selections and shades, omissions, and inclusions can all have an effect on perceptions of negotiation outcomes.

She concludes:

Good maps alone will not be enough to bring peace, but poor design should not join the long list of pitfalls already burdening the peace process. Since the election this year of Mahmoud Abbas as Palestinian president,a fragile informal truce has raised hopes that, sooner or later, negotiators will again be arguing over percentages of territory …

Survey Of Information Systems At Daktronics, Inc., Vincent L. Connelly Aug 2005

Survey Of Information Systems At Daktronics, Inc., Vincent L. Connelly

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Measuring the value (or effectiveness) of Information Systems (IS) is difficult at best. The objective of this case study is to research measures used to gauge exactly that, the value of IS investment. Many IS researchers including DeLone & McLean (DeL 92, DeL 03), Davis (Dav 89), Mathieson (Mat 01), and Goodhue (Goo 95) view measuring user perceptions via survey as one piece in the puzzle of determining what effect Information Systems are having on individual work performance, which gets closer to the value. So, this case study examines perceptions of users of Information Systems (also called enterprise applications) at …

Participatory Gis For Growth Management In The Cheat Lake Planning District Of Monongalia County, West Virginia, Timothy L. Hawthorne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Participatory Geographic Information Systems (PGIS) can be an effective methodology for collecting public input in local land use planning and smart growth management. PGIS-based approaches provide residents with an opportunity to discuss and map their priority land use issues and to identify land use hotspots in a way that is not typically possible in a general public meeting. This thesis research explores how community qualitative information about land use can be incorporated into a PGIS for the Cheat Lake Planning District of Monongalia County, West Virginia. The research presented in this thesis demonstrates how qualitative information strengthens land use planning …

Wmxml: A System For Watermarking Xml Data, Xuan Zhou, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Dhruv Mangla

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As increasing amount of data is published in the form of XML, copyright protection of XML data is becoming an important requirement for many applications. While digital watermarking is a widely used measure to protect digital data from copyright offences, the complex and flexible construction of XML data poses a number of challenges to digital watermarking, such as re-organization and alteration attacks. To overcome these challenges, the watermarking scheme has to be based on the usability of data and the underlying semantics like key attributes and functional dependencies. In this paper, we describe WmXML, a system for watermarking XML documents. …

Using A Poster Contest To Educate Children About Radon, Kenneth R. Tremblay Jr, Michael P. Vogel, Nancy H. Drennen

Journal of Extension

This article presents a strategy to involve children in radon education through a poster contest. This educational effort completed its third year, sponsored by the Healthy Indoor Air for America's Homes program in collaboration with government partners. The contest is directed at middle school children with goals that include fostering coalitions between local radon partners and state radon programs, creating local publicity and awareness about radon, increasing radon testing, and publicizing Radon Action Month. Student posters are judged on accuracy, visual communication of topic, and reproducibility. The two national winners are recognized in Washington, DC.

How Much You Watch, How Much You Pay, Yongdong Wu, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a pay-video scheme that manages video stream, key stream and payment stream efficiently. In our scheme, the owner segments a video into fragments and encrypts them with independent keys. The keys are generated with a novel concept called as hash interval, where each hash interval discloses a range of numbers without disclosing any information on numbers outside of the range. The video fragments are then broadcast on one or more channels. A buyer can purchase the keys to decrypt any fragments and, within each fragment, any desired quality level. The accompanying payment protocol is integrated with the …

Image Watermarking, Steganography, And Morphological Processing, Yi-Ta Wu

Dissertations

With the fast development of computer technology, research in the fields of multimedia security, image processing, and robot vision have recently become popular. Image watermarking, steganogrphic system, morphological processing and shortest path planning are important subjects among them. In this dissertation, the fundamental techniques are reviewed first followed by the presentation of novel algorithms and theorems for these three subjects.

The research on multimedia security consists of two parts, image watermarking and steganographic system. In image watermarking, several algorithms are developed to achieve different goals as shown below. In order to embed more watermarks and to minimize distortion of watermarked …

How Tangible Mock-Ups Support Design Collaboration, Eva Brandt May 2005

How Tangible Mock-Ups Support Design Collaboration, Eva Brandt

Nordes Conference Series

This article is a contribution to a more conscious use of tangible mock-ups in collaborative design processes. It describes a design team’s use of mock- ups in a series of workshops involving potential customers and users. Focus is primarily on the use of three-dimensional design mock-ups and how differences in these affected the dialogue. Reflective conversations were established by using tangible mock-ups as “things-to-think with”. They served as boundary objects that spanned the gap between the different competencies and interests of participants in design. The design mock-ups evoked different things from different participants whereas the challenge for the design team …

The work aims to promote and develop language and literacy development within an innovative contemporary illustration context. The work makes use of research into specific learning methods (such as cloze procedure, semantic and syntactic evaluation, word identification and phonics) and embeds them within a traditional fairytale narrative. The aim of the book is to stimulate and motivate learners through use of tested learning …

What Type Now?, Liam Mccomish May 2005

What Type Now?, Liam Mccomish

Nordes Conference Series

In light of the rapid proliferation of typeface design in the digital era, what conceptual space provides impetus to the designer wishing to create a new typeface design? This article will illustrate the creative process in the making of an individual type design. It will attempt to locate this process in the technical and semantic framework of current typographic debate. The article documents the development of a typeface design and discusses the questions: Can a contemporary, digitally rendered sans-serif be imbued with some of the rhythmic and human visual qualities detected in handwriting? What are the evaluation mechanisms?
