Playing To Learn, John Stanko Jan 2005

Playing To Learn, John Stanko

Theses and Dissertations

This creative project explores some major issues about visual communication in digital games. The project will continue to address new questions and invite questions from my visual and communication design colleagues. My hope is that, through this document, designers will see digital games like photography was seen around the turn of the century, and movies in the 1950's and 60's. In other words, as a rich new medium that offers creative people a virtually unexplored environment in which to work and create.

Flight Signs, Flight Symbols, Margaret Mary Urban Jan 2005

Flight Signs, Flight Symbols, Margaret Mary Urban

Theses and Dissertations

I am investigating the significance of historic events of flight through image making; particularly incidents that captured the collective imagination and became part of our cultural memory. These events have surpassed mere entries in historical texts and become mythic. In the terms of Jungian psychology, they have become symbolic. In terms of Semiotics, they have become signs. Through photographs and installation, I seek to understand their presence in my, and our, unconscious mind.

Recognising The Screenwriter: Agency And Authorship In Adaptation, Michelle Mcmerrin Jan 2005

Recognising The Screenwriter: Agency And Authorship In Adaptation, Michelle Mcmerrin

Theses : Honours

Throughout the history of film studies, the uniqueness of film as an art form has been acknowledged. It is a multi-sensory experience that continually develops and, in the process, reflects social and cultural progression as well. Notions of authorship have been applied to aspects of film throughout its history and although the auteur theory has maintained a significant and lasting influence within the discipline, the screenwriter as author (or auteur) has consistently been excised from film, and indeed literary, study. Why this is the case when the screenplay is such a necessary component of the majority of mainstream films, and …

Allegory From The Cave: A Story About A Mis-Educated Profession And The Paradoxical Prescription, Natasha Martin Jan 2005

Allegory From The Cave: A Story About A Mis-Educated Profession And The Paradoxical Prescription, Natasha Martin

Faculty Articles

The article reviews and engages Professor Derrick Bell’s more recent scholarship on the nature of the legal profession and the practice of law – ETHICAL AMBITION: LIVING A LIFE OF MEANING AND WORTH – placing Bell’s work in the broader framework of the entire legal enterprise highlighting its relevance to legal ethics, the ills of the profession and legal training. The article juxtaposes Bell’s more contemporary critique of the legal profession and practice with the observations of Carter G. Woodson in THE MIS-EDUCATION OF THE NEGRO, another African-American educator largely unfamiliar to the broader legal academy. The author proposes that …

Law, Geography And Cyberspace: The Case Of On-Line Territorial Privacy, Daniel Benoliel Jan 2005

Law, Geography And Cyberspace: The Case Of On-Line Territorial Privacy, Daniel Benoliel

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Territorial privacy, one of the central categories of privacy protection, involves setting limit boundaries on intrusion into an explicit space or locale. Initially, the Restatement (Second) of Torts, which defined the privacy tort of intrusion as applied by courts, most notably designated two classes of excluded areas: "private" places in which the individual can expect to be free from intrusion, and "non-private" places, in which the individual does not have a recognized expectation of privacy. In the physical world, courts ultimately held, almost uniformly, that the tort of intrusion could not occur in a public place or in a place …

Points Of Contact: Nineteenth Century Visual Rhetoric Of The Underground Railroad, Theodore Ransaw Jan 2005

Points Of Contact: Nineteenth Century Visual Rhetoric Of The Underground Railroad, Theodore Ransaw

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Just as eighteenth century master seamstress Betsy Ross implemented more meanings and messages into the first American flag than what is obvious at first glance, so too did African American seamstresses weave messages into quilt patterns used on the Underground Railroad. Similar to the way themes of freedom and liberty in the Declaration of Independence were reinterpreted to include disenfranchised groups, Biblical themes such as heaven and the Promised Land were reinterpreted to include slaves. This study examines the visual rhetoric of nineteenth century textiles used by the Underground Railroad. From the evidence examined, I argue that the visual texts …

New Media Reading Strategy, Cheryl E. Ball Jan 2005

New Media Reading Strategy, Cheryl E. Ball

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This dissertation addresses the need for a strategy that will help readers new to new media texts interpret such texts. While scholars in multimodal and new media theory posit rubrics that offer ways to understand how designers use the materialities and media found in overtly designed, new media texts (see, e.g,, Wysocki, 2004a), these strategies do not account for how readers have to make meaning from those texts. In this dissertation, I discuss how these theories, such as Lev Manovich’s (2001) five principles for determining the new media potential of texts and Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s (2001) four …

Only Screen Deep? Evaluating Aesthetics, Usability, And Satisfaction In Informational Websites, Carrie Avery Jan 2005

Only Screen Deep? Evaluating Aesthetics, Usability, And Satisfaction In Informational Websites, Carrie Avery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the role aesthetics plays in informational websites. In commercial interfaces, aesthetics (the perceived visual appeal and appropriateness of an object) has shown to correlate positively with many aspects of usability and emotional satisfaction. This thesis examines whether aesthetics has similar positive correlations in informational websites. Heuristics or guidelines for evaluating informational websites are developed based on empirical research and practitioner expertise. Categories for heuristic evaluation include usability, credibility, visual clarity, visual richness, and emotional satisfaction. A class of graduate students browsed three academic websites, evaluated them, and critiqued the heuristics. Results indicate that aesthetics does correlate with …

Multiple Description Distributed Image Coding With Side Information For Mobile Wireless Transmission, Min Wu, Daewon Song, Chang Wen Chen Jan 2005

Multiple Description Distributed Image Coding With Side Information For Mobile Wireless Transmission, Min Wu, Daewon Song, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Multiple description coding (MDC) is a source coding technique that involves coding the source information into multiple descriptions, and then transmitting them over different channels in packet network or error-prone wireless environment to achieve graceful degradation if parts of descriptions are lost at the receiver. In this paper, we proposed a multiple description distributed wavelet zero tree image coding system for mobile wireless transmission. We provide two innovations to achieve an excellent error resilient capability. First, when MDC is applied to wavelet subband based image coding, it is possible to introduce correlation between the descriptions in each subband. We consider …

Constant Quality Constrained Bit Allocation For Leaky Prediction Based Fgs Video Streaming, Jianhua Wu, Jianfei Cai, Chang Wen Chen Jan 2005

Constant Quality Constrained Bit Allocation For Leaky Prediction Based Fgs Video Streaming, Jianhua Wu, Jianfei Cai, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Leaky prediction based FGS (Fine Granularity Scalability) can achieve better coding efficiency than the baseline FGS. However, for leaky prediction based FGS (L-FGS), constant quality constrained bit allocation, i.e., how to optimally allocate bits given the current channel bandwidth, is still an open problem. In this paper, based on the accurate R-D (Rate-Distortion) model developed in our previous work, we propose a constant quality constrained bit allocation scheme for L-FGS. The proposed scheme is a combination of offline and online processes. During the offline stage, we perform the L-FGS encoding and collect the necessary feature information. At the online stage, …

Experimental Navigation And The Creative Process, Teresa A. Engle Jan 2005

Experimental Navigation And The Creative Process, Teresa A. Engle

Theses and Dissertations

For this creative project, I am exploring alternate methods of navigating urban environments, and ways in which this activity can inspire creativity. This process is intended to create a new awareness of the urban landscape, break out of the prescribed, and to inspire innovation. The range of possibilities for this way of navigating is vast, and part of the challenge of my experience has been defining boundaries, assigning variables, and using strategies for exploration – making my process inherently morphological. I hope that my work here will encourage others to step out of their comfort zone and experience their environment …

Bottom Albedo Derivations Using Hyperspectral Spectrometry And Multispectral Video, Andrew Scott Farmer Jan 2005

Bottom Albedo Derivations Using Hyperspectral Spectrometry And Multispectral Video, Andrew Scott Farmer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Remote sensing reflectance data collected with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) were used to derive bottom albedo and optical properties for a shallow marine environment near Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas. Optical model inversion techniques were applied to hyperspectral measurements of remote-sensing reflectance to derive water absorption and backscatter coefficients. Using these derived water properties, path attenuation and radiance effects were removed from bottom observations to derive bottom albedos. Histograms from multispectral, hyperspatial video images were used to determine the albedo range of optical end members observed in scenes of sand and seagrass. Variations of spectral signatures for optical end members …

An Investigation Of The Impact Of Visual Culture On Visual Arts Practice And Visual Arts Education, Robyn Roper Jan 2005

An Investigation Of The Impact Of Visual Culture On Visual Arts Practice And Visual Arts Education, Robyn Roper

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research project is based on the premise that school students have a right to an education that assists them to "develop a sense of personal meaning and identity, and be encouraged to reflect critically on the ways in which that occurs." (Curriculum Frameworks, 1998, Values, Statement 2.2 Personal meaning: 325). Not only should education offer students a sense of well being, it should make a difference to their lives and foster an appetite for life long learning. A key ingredient that makes for a rich, fulfilling and rewarding life, is an understanding of visual culture, that according to Freedman …

Habitat Patch Occupancy Dynamics Of Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens) I: A Discrete-Time Model, Karl W. Phillips, Smruti P. Damania, James L. Hayward, Shandelle M. Henson, Clara J. Logan Jan 2005

Habitat Patch Occupancy Dynamics Of Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens) I: A Discrete-Time Model, Karl W. Phillips, Smruti P. Damania, James L. Hayward, Shandelle M. Henson, Clara J. Logan

Faculty Publications

Diurnal habitat occupancy dynamics of Glaucous-winged Gulls were evaluated in a system of six habitats on and around Protection Island, Washington. Data were collected on the rates of gull movement between habitat patches, and from these data the probabilities of transitions between habitats were estimated as functions of tide height and time of day. A discrete-time matrix model based on the transition probabilities was used to generate habitat occupancy predictions, which were then compared to hourly census data. All model parameters were estimated directly from data rather than through model fitting. The model made reasonable predictions for two of the …

The Visual Story Of Exodus: Educational Multimedia Bible, Inwook Choi Jan 2005

The Visual Story Of Exodus: Educational Multimedia Bible, Inwook Choi

Theses

My project is an educational multi-media tool and is related to the religion: Christianity. It was made for the purpose of learning and teaching Exodus: One of the most important books in the Old Testament. As a Bible teacher, I have looked for many ways to teach the Bible effectively for more than ten years. I used to teach the Bible with some visual materials like videos, charts, maps, and sometimes I even created my own supplements because there was no way to find any appropriate visual material which showed customs and culture in the biblical time. When I used …

The constant process of technology development offers Internet users new tools, allowing them to enjoy their right of free expression. One of the latest popular tools introduced for use by mass audience on the Internet is a weblog (or blog). There are more than 4.12 million blogs on the Internet maintained by different people with different purposes. Some of the bloggers manage to create an image that makes them "celebrities" among the community of bloggers. These are the people whose blogs are among the most well-known and also regularly linked by other bloggers. Besides, media's view of blogging comes directly …

Greenwashing: Visual Communication And Political Influence In Environmental Policy, Eric Jeffrey Jenner Jan 2005

Greenwashing: Visual Communication And Political Influence In Environmental Policy, Eric Jeffrey Jenner

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Some contemporary theories in political science maintain that public lobbying is merely an expression of latent and resolute public opinion that is communicated to policymakers. Other theories contend that the public is highly manipulable and that public lobbying by extension can be considered a form of strategic framing that takes place through the news and paid media. Both theoretical approaches specify a function for words or text but are silent on the influence of photographs or images. In this dissertation, I hypothesize that environmental public lobbying operates as strategic framing and that text and photographs have unique and discrete effects …

How To Play The Game: Constructing Australian Masculinities In An Increasingly Mediated World, Carl Broman Jan 2005

How To Play The Game: Constructing Australian Masculinities In An Increasingly Mediated World, Carl Broman

Theses : Honours

Increasing research into social constructions of gender, have begun focusing on the study of male behaviour, or masculinity. The study of hegemonic masculinities helps display the dominant forms of socialised acceptable behaviour and expose artificial constructions of gender difference. Concerning trends in destructive masculine behaviour may find relationships with other forms of social disconnection linked with late capitalism. I look at how direct localised contributions to constructing masculinities have been disempowered by the expansion of the Western corporate economy. The culture of popular sport has been transformed to create an individual identification with Australian Rules Football and its masculinities, that …
