Identifying High-Volume Printing Processes, Malcolm G. Keif, Tom Goglio Jan 2005

Identifying High-Volume Printing Processes, Malcolm G. Keif, Tom Goglio

Graphic Communication

Printing professionals frequently examine printing to see how pieces were produced. They break out loupes and look at the dots. Is it offset or gravure? How about flexo? It is important to be able to distinguish among printing processes through examination in order to determine the key variables to control for quality printing. Further, expertise is established and confidence built when a professional can determine how something is printed.

Implementing Lexical And Creative Intentionality In Synthetic Personality, Erik Vick Jan 2005

Implementing Lexical And Creative Intentionality In Synthetic Personality, Erik Vick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Creating engaging, interactive, and immersive synthetic characters is a difficult task and evaluating the success of a synthetic character is often even more difficult. The later problem is solved by extending Turing's Imitation Game thusly: computational construct should be evaluated based on the criteria of how well the character can mimic a human. In order to accomplish a successful evaluation of the proposed metric, synthetic characters must be consistently believable and capable of role-appropriate emotional expression. The author believes traditional synthetic characters must be improved to meet this goal. For a synthetic character to be believable, human users must be …

Why Protect Political Art As Political Speech, David Greene Jan 2005

Why Protect Political Art As Political Speech, David Greene

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Politics and art make for a volatile combination both socially and jurisprudentially. Although the capacity of artistic expression to relay political ideas was one of the driving forces behind the recognition of strong First Amendment rights for artistic expression, governmental officials tend toward the censorious when art communicates too much and "offends" or causes "controversy." Indeed, when art is "public," that is funded or exhibited by a governmental entity, public officials would often prefer that it contain no message at all. This article reviews the evolution of First Amendment protection for artistic expression, discusses why artistic expression is protected by …

Field Evidence And Isolation Of An Amphibian Male-Male Sexual Repellent, Jason R. Rohr, Daesik Park, Aaron M. Sullivan, Malachy Mckenna, Catherine R. Propper, Dale M. Madison

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Operational sex ratio (OSR) has been traditionally thought of as a force imposing competition for mates rather than also a cue used to regulate the intrasexual competition individuals encounter. To assess whether eastern red-spotted newts, Notophthalmus viridescens, could appropriately compare OSRs, we quantified field responses to traps containing four males, a sexually receptive female, four males plus a female, or nothing as a control. Early in the breeding season, males from two populations chose competitive mating opportunities over no mating opportunity at all, but generally preferred less competitive mating prospects. Later in the breeding season, as the OSR of …

Wild Bactrian Camel Conservation, Richard P. Reading, Evan S. Blumer, Henry Mix, Jadamsuren Adiya

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

The wild Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus ferus) is critically endangered throughout its range in China and Mongolia. Yet, wild camels remain poorly understood, with knowledge derived primarily from a few short studies and anecdotal information. We initiated a wild camel conservation project to determine the reasons for camel decline and to develop a program to address those problems.

We are employing satellite telemetry to gather data on wild camel movement patterns, home ranges, habitat use, and sources of mortality. We are also collecting feces from camels and wolves to determine important forage plants and to begin to assess …

Pixel-Based Skin Color Detection Technique, I. Zaqout, R. Zainuddin, S. Baba Jan 2005

Pixel-Based Skin Color Detection Technique, I. Zaqout, R. Zainuddin, S. Baba

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

In this paper we have used a simple and efficient color-based approach to segment human skin pixels from complex background, using a 2-D histogram-based approach. For skin segmentation, a total of 446,007 skin samples from the training set is manually cropped from the RGB color images, to calculate three lookup tables based on the relationship between each pair of the triple components R, G, B. Derivation of skin classifier rules from the lookup tables are based on how often each attribute value (interval) occurs, and their associated certainty values. One of the simplest features used for the human face detection …

Bringing Her Fist Down On That Wholeness: Rewriting Gendered Narratives In Zoeìˆ Wicomb's Fiction, Rachel Heicher

Masters Theses

This thesis situates South African writer Zoë Wicomb's fictional work within a critical context of current feminist theory, exploring Wicomb's response to a central problem for poststructuralist feminism-how can we deconstruct femininity while simultaneously conserving a platform for feminist political activism; how can we assert. on the one hand, that there are no "women", and then, on the other, continue to campaign on behalf of "women's" rights? Wicomb's two novels to date, You Can't Get Lost in Cape Town (1987) and David's Story (2000) serve as test studies for a model of gender that fluctuates and purposefully and constructively embodies …

Un/Becoming Digital: The Ontology Of Technological Determinism And Its Implications For Art Education, Alison Colman Jan 2005

Un/Becoming Digital: The Ontology Of Technological Determinism And Its Implications For Art Education, Alison Colman

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Artists have been experimenting with analog and digital technologies since the 1960's; early examples include Billy Khiver's Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) and Nam June Paik (1966). While countless artists have since made highly innovative use of new media such as the computer, artificial intelligence (AD, biotech, the Internet and the World Wide Web, LED, motion capture, gesture tracking, CPS, open source, and robotics, artist/ theorists such as Penny (1995), Lovejoy (1997), Weibel (1996; 2001) and Wilson (2002) have cautioned against appropriating deterministic engineering models underlying such technologies.(l)These models, predominant in commercial industry, government and the military, embrace efficiency, …

In The Realm Of The “Real”: Outsider Art And Its Paradoxes For Art Educators, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2005

In The Realm Of The “Real”: Outsider Art And Its Paradoxes For Art Educators, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this essay I want to argue that un (becoming) is a word much like Freud's (1919) discussion of the word unheimlich (uncanny), which reveals a secretive and clandestine aspect of art that art educators must and should concern themselves with, since it identifies a "realm of the Real" whose abjection legitimates our very practice at its expense. It marks a return of the repressed. Un (becoming), like Freud's uncanny is visual art's non-reflected double as I attempt to show. This is the issue I wish to raise when it comes to the question of so-called "Outsider art," sometimes referred …

Parent-Teacher Collaboration For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders: The Role Of Teacher Training, Amber Hays '05 Jan 2005

Parent-Teacher Collaboration For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders: The Role Of Teacher Training, Amber Hays '05

Honors Projects

Over twenty years of research has demonstrated that collaborative relationships between parents and teachers are invaluable in enhancing the educational success of all students and are especially meaningful when students have ASD (e.g., Ruble & Dalrymple, 2002). However, collaborative relationships are often difficult to develop because many educators remain uninformed about ASD (Helps, Newsom-Davis, & Callias, 1999) and untrained in working with parents (Lazar & Slostad, 1999). The present study evaluated the ability of an intervention to (a) encourage more positive attitudes toward parent-teacher collaboration, (b) increase general knowledge about ASD, and (c) boost comfort, competence, and confidence levels with …

Robust Video Transmission Based On Multiple Description Scalable Coding With Erec, Haifeng Zheng, Lun Yu, Chang Wen Chen Jan 2005

Robust Video Transmission Based On Multiple Description Scalable Coding With Erec, Haifeng Zheng, Lun Yu, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper presents a multiple description scalable video coding scheme based on overcomplete motion compensated temporal filtering, named MD-OMCTF, for robust video transmission over wireless and packet loss networks. The intrinsic nature of the structure of OMCTF and embedded coding with modified SPIHT algorithm enable us to provide fully scalable properties for the proposed scheme. We show that multiple description coding is very effective in combating with channel failures in both Internet and wireless video. The integration of MD with OMCTF allows us to achieve both loss resilience and complete scalability. In order to further improve error-resilience to channel bit …
