Theorizing, Measuring, And Predicting Knowledge Sharing Behavior In Organizations - A Social Capital Approach, Chay Yue Wah, Thomas Menkhoff, Benjamin Loh, Hans-Dieter Evers

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study aims to understand the social and organizational factors that influence knowledge sharing. A model of knowledge management and knowledge sharing was developed inspired by the work of Nahapiet and Ghoshal. Data on demographics and various social capital measures were collected from a sample of members of a tertiary educational institution in Singapore in 2003. Reward & recognition, open-mindedness and cost concerns of knowledge hoarding turned out to be the strongest predictors of knowledge sharing rather than pro-social motives or organizational concern. Overall, the findings provide evidence for the importance of a conducive organizational climate and state-of-the art performance …

Rhythms Of Life: Antecedents And Outcomes Of Work-Family Balance In Employed Parents, Samuel Aryee, E. S. Srinivas, Hwee Hoon Tan Jan 2005

Rhythms Of Life: Antecedents And Outcomes Of Work-Family Balance In Employed Parents, Samuel Aryee, E. S. Srinivas, Hwee Hoon Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examined antecedents and outcomes of a fourfold taxonomy of work-family balance in terms of the direction of influence (work-family vs. family-work) and type of effect (conflict vs. facilitation). Respondents were full-time employed parents in India. Confirmatory factor analysis results provided evidence for the discriminant validity of M. R. Frone' s (2003) fourfold taxonomy of work-family balance. Results of moderated regression analysis revealed that different processes underlie the conflict and facilitation components. Furthermore, gender had only a limited moderating influence on the relationships between the antecedents and the components of work-family balance. Last, work-family facilitation was related to the …

Public health is a legal term of art referring specifically to delineated powers, duties, rights, and responsibilities. An emerging human rights conception of public health justifies government intervention. Intervention involves public officials taking appropriate measures including environmental regulations pursuant to specific legal authority, after balancing private rights and public interests, to protect the health of the public. This article is a critical analysis of the performance of the actors in maintaining environmental standards in India. Part II is a discussion on the source of environmental law in India. Part III discusses the performance of the legislature. Part IV evaluates the …

Seeking Life Balance: The Perceptions Of Health Of Cambodian Women In Resettlement, Olivia Catolico Phd, Msn Jan 2005

Seeking Life Balance: The Perceptions Of Health Of Cambodian Women In Resettlement, Olivia Catolico Phd, Msn

Dissertations

This grounded theory study was an inquiry into the perceptions of health of Cambodian women in resettlement and the conditions that influenced their perceptions. Few studies of Cambodian women who escaped political conflict exist. Cambodian women were among the waves of Southeast Asian refugees who have resettled in the United States. The sequelae of significant life trauma upon the health of Cambodian women in resettlement have received little attention in the nursing literature. There is less information about their perceptions of health in resettlement as their beliefs about health and illness causation contrast with those of Western health care providers. …

Simultaneous Equations In Ordered Discrete Responses With Regressor-Dependent Thresholds, Myoung-Jae Lee, A. Kimhi Jan 2005

Simultaneous Equations In Ordered Discrete Responses With Regressor-Dependent Thresholds, Myoung-Jae Lee, A. Kimhi

Research Collection School Of Economics

The parameters of ordered discrete response (ODR) models are identified only up to a positive scale. In this paper, we examine the identification issue for simultaneous equations with ODR, where the well-known identification problem in simultaneous equations of recovering structural-form parameters from reduced-form parameters is compounded with the ODR identification problem. We allow the thresholds in ODR to be regressor dependent as well as constant; the former is particularly challenging because threshold parameters get mixed with regression parameters, adding one more dimension to the identification problem. We also explore a cross-equation restriction on threshold differences, under which the structural form …

Development Of A Generic Critical Appraisal Tool By Consensus: Presentation Of First Round Delphi Survey Results, Jeannie Burnett, Karen Grimmer, Saravana Kumar Jan 2005

Development Of A Generic Critical Appraisal Tool By Consensus: Presentation Of First Round Delphi Survey Results, Jeannie Burnett, Karen Grimmer, Saravana Kumar

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The growing importance of evidence based practice is necessitating academics and clinicians to be able to make judgments about the quality of the body of research evidence pertaining to clinical questions. There are numerous critical appraisal tools to assist this process. These are mostly designed for specific research designs, and tend not to reflect the particular concerns of allied health professionals, such as accuracy of diagnosis, adequate description of intervention, and sensitivity and utility of outcome measures. This paper reports the findings of a study which sought expert opinion on the essential criteria for critical appraisal, and whether a generic …

Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Perceptions Of The Achievement Gap, Linda Bol, Robert Q. Berry Iii Jan 2005

Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Perceptions Of The Achievement Gap, Linda Bol, Robert Q. Berry Iii

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to survey the perceptions of secondary mathematics teachers on factors contributing to the achievement gap and ways to reduce this gap. National Council of the Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) members were surveyed, and a total of 379 secondary teachers responded. Overall, respondents were most likely to attribute the achievement gap to student characteristics, such as differences in motivational levels, work ethic, and family support. Furthermore, teachers from schools with a higher population of White students were more likely to attribute the gap to student characteristics than were teachers in schools with higher percentages of …

Review Of Roger Ames And David Hall, Daodejing: Making This Life Significant: A Philosophical Translation, Alan Kam Leung Chan

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Is there a need for another translation of the Laozi Daodejing? Although there are already over 100 translations in English alone, this present effort by Ames and Hall marks a welcome addition, in that it offers an engaging philosophical account of the Daodejing as chiefly concerned with “making this life significant.”

A Content Analysis Of Persuasion Techniques Used On White Supremacist Websites, Georgie Ann Weatherby, Brian Scoggins Jan 2005

A Content Analysis Of Persuasion Techniques Used On White Supremacist Websites, Georgie Ann Weatherby, Brian Scoggins

Journal of Hate Studies

The Internet has made it possible for people to access just about any information they could possibly want. Conversely, it has given organizations a vehicle through which they can get their message out to a large audience. Hate groups have found the Internet particularly appealing, because they are able to get their uncensored message out to an unlimited number of people (ADL 2005). This is an issue that is not likely to go away.

A Crime By Any Other Name: The Semantics Of Hate, Barbara Perry Jan 2005

A Crime By Any Other Name: The Semantics Of Hate, Barbara Perry

Journal of Hate Studies

I have become increasingly dissatisfied with the continued reliance on the term “hate crime,” due in large measure to the often willful scholarly and public misunderstanding and misuse of the phrase, wherein references are made to such processes as “the criminalization of hatred” (Dority 1994). In response to such tendencies, like Gail Mason (2001, 253) in her recent Law and Critique article, “I wish to raise some questions about hate as a heuristic device.”

Toward An Interdisciplinary Field Of Hate Studies: Developing A Framework, Jon Blitzer Jan 2005

Toward An Interdisciplinary Field Of Hate Studies: Developing A Framework, Jon Blitzer

Journal of Hate Studies

In the last volume of the Journal of Hate Studies, Ken Stern of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) wrote an article addressing the need for what he calls an interdisciplinary field of hate studies. For too long, he argued, academics have studied “hate”1 in isolation. A social psychologist may have approached the subject looking to study the relationship between an individual hater and the hate group to which he belongs; a political scientist or economist might have studied how economic instability or political disenfranchisement contributed to the behavior of some racist or anti-Semite. To put it simply, academics from a …

A Pilot Study Of Tailored Teaching On Non-Drug Enhancements For Managing Postoperative Pain, Susanne Mary Koszalka Tracy Jan 2005

A Pilot Study Of Tailored Teaching On Non-Drug Enhancements For Managing Postoperative Pain, Susanne Mary Koszalka Tracy

Open Access Dissertations

The Agency for Healthcare Quality Research (AHRQ cites the under-use of non-drug methods for pain management as among the top twenty-five issues in patient safety (AHRQ, 2001) in acute care hospitals. Little is known about patients' knowledge and attitudes towards non-drug interventions, especially in adult populations 50 years and older. Education is one strategy for improving patients' knowledge, attitudes and use of non-drug enhancements to complement pharmacological pain management. The primary purpose of this pilot study was to describe the usefulness of a tailored teaching intervention on three best practice protocols for music, massage, and self-guided imagery for pain management …

Psychopathy And Compliance Correlates For Male Delinquents In A Community Program, Marshall Jackson Robinson Jan 2005

Psychopathy And Compliance Correlates For Male Delinquents In A Community Program, Marshall Jackson Robinson

Open Access Dissertations

Psychopathy, the constellation of behaviors and attitudes characterized by aggressive predation, manipulation, callousness, exploitation, and which is often connected with criminality, can exact a substantial interpersonal and social toll. While the prevalence of psychopathy is extremely low among the general public, it is a significant population within the realms of criminal justice and mental health. Researchers have linked psychopathy to chronic antisocial behavior across the life span, and have established strong links between adult psychopathy and certain subpopulations of behaviorally dysfunctional youth. Within the last ten years much work has gone into conceptualizing and applying the construct of psychopathy to …

White Washed: The Representation Of Hispanics In Television National News Coverage., Matthew P. Gallagher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study analyzed Hispanics and national television news coverage. The quantitative portion of the study examined four separate weeks of television news coverage on six networks over a one year period. From the 1,106 stories examined, Hispanics were viewed in only 18 stories. And from the results it was concluded that television news networks are “white washed,” meaning that the news is based around Caucasians.

Juvenile Delinquency And The Acceptance Of Offence-Specific Neutralizations., Jared Wharram Jan 2005

Juvenile Delinquency And The Acceptance Of Offence-Specific Neutralizations., Jared Wharram

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between offense-specific neutralizations and delinquency. Analysis of data from the final wave of the Evaluation of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) Program in the United States (1995-1999) reveals that youth are likely to accept neutralizations for behaviors they have committed. For example, when controlling for other variables theoretically linked to delinquency, neutralization of lying was found to be significantly associated with lying, while neutralization of stealing was found to be significantly associated with stealing and neutralization of violence was found to be significantly associated with violent behavior. The …

Community Factors And Educational Attainment In A North Appalachian Area., Olena L. Welling Jan 2005

Community Factors And Educational Attainment In A North Appalachian Area., Olena L. Welling

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Regression analysis suggests that district-to-district differences in high school completion rates are positively related to post-high school economic and educational opportunities. High school completion rates are negatively related to the costs of schools. Dropping out of high school is the students’ attempt to rationally respond to their environment and social circumstances. Thus, dropping out can be interpreted as a rational phenomenon. Students are calculating, often unself-consciously, the costs of staying in school versus the returns to education. Students are acting rational in responding to the constraints and opportunities of their social circumstances. District-level high school completion rates were regressed on …

A Study Of Persuasion, Propaganda And The Effectiveness Of Messages., Kelly M. Saunders Jan 2005

A Study Of Persuasion, Propaganda And The Effectiveness Of Messages., Kelly M. Saunders

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study of persuasive and propagandistic messages explores the differences and similarities among the two, as well as elements necessary for success, using previous research in the field. In addition, this report includes an analysis of the diffusion, framing, placement within newspaper articles, and effects of news content relating to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth disseminated during the 2004 Presidential campaign. The results of this study suggest a need for greater scrutiny among reporters regarding messages distributed by interest groups.

Unbalanced Frame: A Content Analysis Of Four Main American Newspapers And Their Coverage Of Colombia And The Drug Issue., Olga Elena Velez Galvis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study used content analysis of The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald and Dallas Morning news and analyzed their coverage of Colombia and the drug issue during 1993, 1998 and 2003. The main purpose was to observe how these publications reported on this topic over that specific period of time. Findings showed prevalence of episodic stories over the thematic ones. These papers primarily presented episodic news coverage on Colombia and their drugs, which exhibited mainly a negative tone. On the other hand, thematic news coverage on Colombia and its drugs were more positive than the episodic, since …

Understanding The Coach -Athlete Dyad: The Impact Of Educational Interventions On Perceptions And Psychosocial Variables., Lindsey C. Blom Jan 2005

Understanding The Coach -Athlete Dyad: The Impact Of Educational Interventions On Perceptions And Psychosocial Variables., Lindsey C. Blom

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With the understanding that coaches have a direct impact on the athletes with whom they work (Libman, 1998) and with the knowledge that this influence is complex (Weiss & Hayashi, 1996), it can be assumed that coaching education is of the utmost importance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the PASS IT Back program developed to help coaches address their specific players' perceptions and preferences for the coach-athlete relationship. Nine boys' high school soccer coaches and their respective teams were randomly placed in one of three categories: (1) control group, (2) feedback group receiving information about players' perceptions …

An Exploration Of The Adjustment Processes Of Freshmen Student-Athletes And Non -Athlete Students., V Paul Downey Jan 2005

An Exploration Of The Adjustment Processes Of Freshmen Student-Athletes And Non -Athlete Students., V Paul Downey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the adjustment to college of freshmen student-athletes (n = 78) and students (n = 174) at a Division I university. Participants were surveyed using the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ; Baker & Siryk, 1999). Student-athletes were found to be significantly less committed to earning their undergraduate degrees than non-athletes, during both week seven and week 15 of their first semester. Predictor variables accounted for 24% of the variance in social adjustment with a more positive perceived impact of personal-social factors and an internal locus of control, emerging as significant predictors. Commitment …

The Bustle Of Horses On A Ship: Drug Control In New York City Public Housing, Jeffrey Fagan, Garth Davies, Jan Holland, Tamara Dumanovsky

Faculty Scholarship

For decades, violence, drugs and public housing have been closely linked in political culture and popular imagination. In 1990, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) made funds available to public housing authorities to combat drug and crime problems. This program, the Drug Elimination Program (DEP) combined several strategies under one administrative umbrella: police enforcement, drug treatment, drug prevention, youth and gang outreach, community organizing, integrated health and social service agencies, and tenant mobilization projects. In New York, the Housing Authority spent $165 million on DEP in its 330 public housing sites between 1990 and 1996. Yet there has …

Policing L.A.'S Skid Row: Crime And Real Estate Redevelopment In Downtown Los Angeles [An Experiment In Real Time], Bernard E. Harcourt Jan 2005

Policing L.A.'S Skid Row: Crime And Real Estate Redevelopment In Downtown Los Angeles [An Experiment In Real Time], Bernard E. Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, I document the present. I make a record, with photographs, interviews, maps, and observations of L.A.'s Skid Row as it is today. Drawing on the tradition and methods of critical socio-legal studies, I also explore the constitutive dimensions of deviance. I investigate the possible attraction that disorderliness and criminality may have to today's urban pioneers. I explore the idea that deviance and disorder may become, in some corners, a consumable good to urban dwellers. And I do this by drawing on numerous hours of personal observation on the streets of L.A.'s Skid Row, on interviews of service …

Influence Of Nationality On The Interpretation Of Ireland's Tourism Destination Imagery, Catriona Murphy-Underhill Jan 2005

Influence Of Nationality On The Interpretation Of Ireland's Tourism Destination Imagery, Catriona Murphy-Underhill

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis investigates the influence of nationality on the interpretations of the tourism destination imagery of Ireland, drawing in particular on the views of tourists travelling from Britain. It involved an assessment of the influence (if any) of the nationality of the tourist and the nationality of the place on pre- and post-visit interpretations of Ireland's perceived and projected images, as well as an evaluation of the implications of such influences on Ireland's image as a tourist destination. By means of empirical research applied to the same sample of tourists travelling from Britain to Ireland via Shannon airport, the factors …

In The Shadow Of Delaware - The Rise Of Hostile Takeovers In Japan, Curtis J. Milhaupt Jan 2005

In The Shadow Of Delaware - The Rise Of Hostile Takeovers In Japan, Curtis J. Milhaupt

Faculty Scholarship

Despite longstanding predictions to the contrary, hostile takeovers have arrived in Japan. This Essay explains why and explores the implications of this phenomenon, not only for Japanese corporate governance, but also for our understanding of corporate law development around the world today. Delaware law figures prominently in the recent Japanese events. A highprofile battle for corporate control has just generated a judicial standard for takeover defenses that might be called a Unocal rule with Japanese characteristics. Meanwhile, ministy-endorsed takeover guidelines have been formulated that are heavily influenced by the familiar "threat" and "proportionality" tests under Delaware law, along with many …
