Education For Democracy: Discovering Civic Engagement, Sally Sayles Jan 2005

Education For Democracy: Discovering Civic Engagement, Sally Sayles

McNair Scholars Journal

Exploring the concepts of an experiential education promotes transformative connections between the academic classroom and other domains of student life. Therefore, this research aims to discover the capacity that education has to change the world. It explores Jane Addams’ work, her efforts to encourage democracy, and her educational philosophy that emphasizes learning from life experiences. Additionally, her philosophy of social ethics is intertwined with the writings of John Dewey, Charlene Haddock Siegfried, Ira Shor, and various other theorists. My analysis uses feminist and critical theory to formulate a learning foundation that fosters civic engagement for students and educators.

Theology: Also (Green) Religious Experience Seeking Understanding, Thomas Hughson Jan 2005

Theology: Also (Green) Religious Experience Seeking Understanding, Thomas Hughson

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Religious experience in contemporary theological epistemology is a theme broad enough to allow for many approaches. This essay grants the concept of 'religious experience' tentative validity, subject to later qualification. The actual experience explored will be a 'green' experience of non-human nature that many Christians have in common with many non-Christians. The first section describes it in a general way, while the second probes its character as a possible 'religious experience'. Then, a third section begins to explore its theological significance. A conclusion emphasizes the essential, dynamic partnership between theological method and non-methodical elements, such as religious experiences in general …

Where Supply Meets Demand: Women In Diesel Mechanics, Emily Raine Jan 2005

Where Supply Meets Demand: Women In Diesel Mechanics, Emily Raine

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

In 2004, with a participation rate of 59.2 percent, women represented 46 percent of the total U. S. labor force. This same year, women earned an average of $573 per week, approximately 80 percent of men’s median weekly earnings. It is rarely disputed that a gender wage gap exists; rather it is the cause of this differential that is often the subject of debate. Empirical evidence indicates that the wage differential can be attributed to factors such as differences in education, labor market experience, and occupational choice.

Research has consistently shown that increases in educational attainment will lead to positive …

Utilizing Principles Of Transformative Mediation In The Development Of The Redwood Regional Watershed Center, Paula Fitzgerald Yoon Jan 2005

Utilizing Principles Of Transformative Mediation In The Development Of The Redwood Regional Watershed Center, Paula Fitzgerald Yoon

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In the twenty first century, mediation and watershed management are each paradigm-shifting tools for our globalized society. Mediation is the process that creates a structure allowing parties in conflict to resolve their own differences. Transformative mediation is a form of mediation that has the capacity to transform the character of both individual disputants and society as a whole. This project applies transformative mediation as a process to promote the growth of watershed management and restoration. Transformative mediation was used by a non-profit organization, the Redwood Regional Watershed Center (RRWC), to bring all parties together to work on education, interpretation and …

Subjective Decisionmaking And Unconscious Discrimination, Melissa Hart Jan 2005

Subjective Decisionmaking And Unconscious Discrimination, Melissa Hart

Publications

Unconscious bias is widely recognized as the most pervasive barrier to equal employment opportunity for minorities and women in the workplace today and yet many argue that federal laws prohibiting discrimination do not prohibit unconscious discrimination. This article argues that the law does in fact provide some redress for unconscious discrimination. Title VII may not be a perfect method for attacking unconscious bias, but it is a mistake to assume that it is without potential. The article challenges the assumption commonly held by judges that a finding of discrimination must be preceded by the belief that an employer is lying …

The Ghost Of Telecommunications Past, Philip J. Weiser Jan 2005

The Ghost Of Telecommunications Past, Philip J. Weiser

Publications

Paul Starr's The Creation of the Media presents modern policymakers with an important opportunity to consider the historical lessons of the telecommunications industry. This Book Review underscores how Starr's book richly explains some key components of U.S. information policy - such as relying on an integrated strategy of intellectual property, antitrust law, and telecommunications policy - and that some historical lessons are misplaced as to today's environment - such as a categorical skepticism of vertical integration. Moreover, Starr's account of telecommunications history explains that the U.S.'s success in promoting innovation in the information industries reflects our reluctance to manage key …

Can Sense Of Community Inform Social Capital?, Julie Ann Pooley, Lynne Cohen, Lisbeth Pike

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper examines the theoretical linkage between social capital and sense of community through research studies within four contextual areas. Social capital (SC) can be conceptualized as all the interactions between individuals in a community, and has been examined in various groups and communities. Sense of community (SoC) is a psychological construct that we argue is a correlate of social capital. Sense of community reflects the feelings of attachment and belonging that an individual has towards a community. Through qualitative and quantitative research carried out across the lifespan in four communities in Western Australia (i.e., Perth community, adolescent Jewish community, …

Identity Synthesis: Creating An Identity From Scratch, Lennon Hopkins Jan 2005

Identity Synthesis: Creating An Identity From Scratch, Lennon Hopkins

Research outputs pre 2011

A substantial quantity of research has previously been conducted into the identification and application of measures related to the detection and prevention of identity theft and identity fraud. In the current security conscious environment, the concept of creating an artificial identity is generally met with both caution and suspicion. Much of the attention placed on the concept of identity fabrication has been focused on the unlawful or the malicious use of created identities. Admittedly, the primary intention of a falsified identity is to usually gain a financial benefit however, instances such as long-term witness protection would provide a legitimate need …

Diffusion Of Innovation - The Adoption Of E-Commerce By Small To Medium Enterprises (Sme's) - A Comparative Analysis, Wayne Pease, Michelle Rowe

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper explores the issues that influence the diffusion of innovation as it relates to the adoption of e-commerce by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). It seeks to identify factors facilitating and inhibiting such adoption across contexts – regional, small city and large city. This analysis is cross cultural so the impact of differing economic and cultural issues also will be identified in this research. Whilst it is generally accepted that the strategic use of information technology (IT) is vital in the marketplace, the rate of such uptake between small and large businesses varies. This research seeks to identify the …

Seeking Information Superiority: Strategies For Business In The Commercial Application Of Information Operations, Martin Dart Jan 2005

Seeking Information Superiority: Strategies For Business In The Commercial Application Of Information Operations, Martin Dart

Research outputs pre 2011

Information superiority is a condition that many businesses attempt to attain without truly understanding what it is, or how to get there. This paper presents an overview to help businesspeople recognize the road to information superiority, and some of the essential strategies to implement along the way. Information operations is a concept described to enable information superiority, when used with a network form of organization (as opposed to simply being networked). This paper describes information operations across their fundamental structure of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR); and suggests a separation between industrial espionage and legitimate business information gathering. A model …

Where Do White People Come From? A Foucaultian Critique Of Whiteness Studies, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 2005

Where Do White People Come From? A Foucaultian Critique Of Whiteness Studies, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

Over the past 15 years we have seen the rise of a field of inquiry known as Whiteness Studies. Two of its major tenets are (1) that white identity is socially constructed and functions as a racial norm and (2) that those who occupy the position of white subjectivity exercise ‘white privilege’, which is oppressive to non-whites. However, despite their ubiquitous use of the term ‘norm’, Whiteness Studies theorists rarely give any detailed account of how whiteness serves to normalize. A case is made here that we can only understand how whiteness normalizes if we place the development of white …

Two "Wrongs" Do/Can Make A Right: Remembering Mathematics, Physics, & Various Legal Analogies (Two Negatives Make A Positive; Are Remedies Wrong?) The Law Has Made Him Equal, But Man Has Not, John C. Duncan Jr

Journal Publications

This article demonstrates the incomplete logic and inconsistent legal reasoning used in the argument against affirmative action. The phrase "two wrongs don't make a right" is often heard in addressing various attempts to equalize, to balance, and to correct the acknowledged wrongs of slavery and segregation and their derivative effects. Yet, "two wrongs do/can make a right" has a positive connotation. This article reviews the history of societal and judicial wrongs against Blacks, as well as the evolution of the narrowing in legal reasoning concerning discrimination against minorities, including Blacks. Next, the legal reasoning behind legacy programs will be reviewed …

Interracial Love, Virginians' Lies, And Donald Mccaig's Jacob's Ladder, Suzanne W. Jones Jan 2005

Interracial Love, Virginians' Lies, And Donald Mccaig's Jacob's Ladder, Suzanne W. Jones

English Faculty Publications

The Old South's taboo against love between blacks and whites has cast a long shadow. No cross-racial relationship has been so pathologized by American society. Even in 1967, when the Supreme Court finally declared antimiscegenation laws unconstitutional in the case of Loving v. Virginia, sixteen states still prohibited interracial marriage, down from thirty states as recently as 1948. Not until 1998 and 2000 did ballot initiatives in South Carolina and Alabama finally eliminate the last of the antimiscegenation laws, although no one had tried to enforce them for years. Recent U.S. census figures show interracial unions increasing--up from 3 …

Harry Potter And The Law, Timothy S. Hall, Jeffrey E. Thomas, Danaya C. Wright, James Charles Smith, Aaron Schwabach, Joel Fishman, Daniel Austin Green, Andrew P. Morriss, Benjamin H. Barton

Faculty Works

The magnitude of the Harry Potter phenomenon alone would make it worthy of consideration; the fact that it is children's literature, and thus may play a significant part in forming a future generation's attitudes toward law and legal institutions, makes it even more so. The various contributions to this article explore various aspects of law and culture as presented in or viewed through the Harry Potter stories. The contributions of James Charles Smith and Danaya Wright address the depiction of families in the narratives and the limited role and development of family law. Benjamin H. Barton's contribution considers the failings …
