U.S. Legal Ethics: The Coming Of Age Of Global And Comparative Perspectives, Laurel Terry

Faculty Scholarly Works

This Article reviews the influence of comparative law during the past 100 years and then divides the last 100 years into three distinct comparative legal ethics eras. The first era consists of the time period between 1904 and 1973, during which there was both domestic and comparative legal ethics scholarship, although a relatively small amount compared to later years. The second time period, which dates from 1974, when legal ethics became a required course, to 1997, represents the coming of age of domestic legal ethics scholarship. This time period also included a significant amount of legal ethics scholarship employing a …

He Hath A Heart For Harping: Stephen Harper And Election Spending In A Spendthrift Age, Richard Haigh Jan 2005

He Hath A Heart For Harping: Stephen Harper And Election Spending In A Spendthrift Age, Richard Haigh

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The decision by the Supreme Court of Canada in Harper v. Canada was not favourable to Stephen Harper. In a split decision, the Court held that the latest federal campaign spending limits were acceptable. This paper briefly examines the recent history of election financing laws in Canada and looks briefly at three distinct aspects of the Harper decision: The irony of Stephen Harper’s position in the case, evidential and conceptual problems associated with equating commercial speech with political speech, and an examination of whether financial restraints are of declining importance in an era where political influence is more subtly obtained. …

Building Uncommon Community With A Common Book, Colleen T. Boff, Schroeder Robert, Joy Gambill Jan 2005

Building Uncommon Community With A Common Book, Colleen T. Boff, Schroeder Robert, Joy Gambill

University Libraries Faculty Publications

Library involvement with Campus Reading Experiences (CRE) at two community colleges and two four-year institutions are described. The case studies were chosen because each reflects a strong library presence in institutional level program planning and instructional development for deeper student learning related to the CRE. In particular, the case studies highlight the connections these programs create between librarians, student affairs, and academic affairs. Practical suggestions for how librarians can initiate this type of experience on their campus as well as advice for how librarians can take a more active role in getting involved with already existing reading programs are provided.

A Comparison Of The Canons Of Science Used In Positivistic Research And Constructivist/Naturalistic Research, Ipek Bozkurt, Andres Sousa-Poza

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, the canons of science which are crucial for positivistic, empirical research and constructivist/naturalistic research will be identified, described, compared and discussed. Although there are common canons which are often used in papers throughout literature, it would be beneficial to set a common ground for the identification and use of the canons. The canons used in positivistic research will differ from the canons used in constructivist/ naturalistic research. This paper will analyze major publications (papers, books, etc.) exploring the canons either directly or indirectly, and will provide a link between major characteristics of two different research philosophies and …

How Does Immigration Impact On The Quality Of Life In A Small Town?, James J. Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, X. Winston Yan, Steven Larrick, Heather Keele, Blanca E. Ramirez

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Throughout the world, people are migrating from rural areas to cities to find jobs and to seek a better life. As a result, many cities and regions are experiencing population influx. Many small midwestem communities have been experiencing these rapid demographic changes. 'In the 1990s, Nebraska rural counties continue(d) to experience out-migration of the young, working-age population, with remaining residents tending to be older. However, the 1980s and current outmigrants are being replaced by in-migrants' (Austin, 1996). Lured by jobs in the food processing industry (mainly meatpacking), many towns and cities have been experiencing a significant increase of new residents, …

Report To Congress From Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales On U.S. Government Efforts To Combat Trafficking In Persons In Fiscal Year 2004, U. S. Department Of Justice

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Trafficking in persons is a regrettably widespread form of modern-day slavery. An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 human beings are trafficked across international borders each year. Furthermore, between 14,500 and 17,500 victims are trafficked into the United States each year. In response, the United States has led the world in the fight against this terrible crime.

Combating Human Trafficking: Achieving Zero Tolerance, U.S. House Of Representatives Committee On International Relations

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

The Subcommittee will today hear testimony concerning the continuing problem of human trafficking. The U.S. Government, as we all know, now estimates that some 600,000 to 800,000 women, children and men are bought and sold across international borders each year and exploited through forced labor or commercial sex exploitation. Potentially millions more are trafficked internally within the borders of their countries. Eighty percent of the victims are women and girls. An estimated 14,500 to 17,500 foreign citizens are trafficked into the U.S. each and every year.

As Chairman of the Subcommittee on International Operations and Human Rights in the late …

2005 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

The Department of State is required by law to submit a report each year to the U.S. Congress on foreign governments’ efforts to eliminate severe forms of trafficking in persons. This Report is the fifth annual TIP Report.

This Report is intended to raise global awareness and spur foreign governments to take effective actions to counter all forms of trafficking in persons — a form of modern-day slavery. The Report has increasingly focused the efforts of a growing community of nations to share information and to partner in new and important ways to fight human trafficking. A country that fails …

An Examination Of Modern Family Communication And Moral Values In America And Europe, Melanie Seasons Jan 2005

An Examination Of Modern Family Communication And Moral Values In America And Europe, Melanie Seasons

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The number one concern of some American voters in the 2004 presidential election was "moral values." This paper is an examination of the American family and its fascination with so-called traditional moral values. The results of the analysis are then contrasted to European families, who seem to, according to some research, be less concerned with such traditional beliefs and values. Moral values are defined, explored, and cross-referenced between the two cultures in order to get a better understanding of how they play a part in modem family communication.
