Cruelty Toward Cats: Changing Perspectives, Randall Lockwood Jan 2005

Cruelty Toward Cats: Changing Perspectives, Randall Lockwood

State of the Animals 2005

Of all the species that have been domesticated, cats have historically been subjected to the widest diversity of treatment by humans. They have been worshipped as gods and reviled as devils, coddled and pampered, but also abandoned and abused. Our treatment of cats has likewise created a range of problems for professionals concerned with their care—from dealing with problems of obesity and overindulgence to tending to the needs of animals who have been neglected, intentionally harmed, or even tortured.

Tracking The “State Of The Animals”: Challenges And Opportunities In Assessing Change, Randall Lockwood

State of the Animals 2005

In this chapter we:

  1. Review some of the measures that have been used in the past to attempt to assess the state of the animals and the extent to which we can continue to apply these measures to track future changes.
  2. Review some of the emerging tools and developing technologies that can improve our tracking of the state of the animals and provide some quantitative measures of our progress.
  3. Explore some examples of general measures of human interaction with animals that might prove useful in predicting and tracking changes in how they are treated.

Ethnic Studies

What does it mean for engineers to engage in global problem solving? What forms of knowledge or sets of capabilities characterize the effective global problem solver? What sorts of learning experiences are involved in gaining such knowledge and capabilities? The purpose of this paper is to present the design, initial steps, and preliminary assessment of the “Engineering Cultures: Building the Global Engineer” project which seeks to address the above questions through the development of a new undergraduate course called “Engineering Cultures.” The first section of this paper briefly outlines ongoing efforts to internationalize engineering curricula, followed by a discussion of …

Governors Highway Safety Associations And Transportation Planning: Exploratory Factor Analysis And Structural Equation Modeling, Sudeshna Mitra, Simon Washington, Eric Dumbaugh, Micael D. Meyer Jan 2005

Governors Highway Safety Associations And Transportation Planning: Exploratory Factor Analysis And Structural Equation Modeling, Sudeshna Mitra, Simon Washington, Eric Dumbaugh, Micael D. Meyer

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 mandated the consideration of safety in the regional transportation planning process. As part of National Cooperative Highway Research Program Project 8-44, "Incorporating Safety into the Transportation Planning Process," we conducted a telephone survey to assess safety-related activities and expertise at Governors Highway Safety Associations (GHSAs), and GHSA relationships with metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) and state departments of transportation (DOTs). The survey results were combined with statewide crash data to enable exploratory modeling of the relationship between GHSA policies and programs and statewide safety. The modeling objective was to illuminate current hurdles …

President Ho Speaks To The Children: Thieu Sinh Magazine And The New Child In 1945 Revolutionary Vietnam, Christina Elizabeth Firpo

History

The history of the immediate aftermath of the declaration of independence in Vietnam on September 2, 1945 awaits a socio-cultural analysis. Historiography of this period is saturated with military and political analyses. But how much do we really know about its social programs and cultural history? This paper examines the socio-cultural history of the child during the revolution. In the midst of forming a new government, unifying the anti-colonial movement, and fighting the return of the French colonial government, President Hồ Chí Minh called on the youth to liberate southern Vietnam.1 How did the government prepare the children for …

Third Cybernetic Revolution: Beyond Open To Dialogic System Theories, Khadija Al Arkoubi Jan 2005

Third Cybernetic Revolution: Beyond Open To Dialogic System Theories, Khadija Al Arkoubi

Management Faculty Publications

We question Systems Theory by adopting a Bakhtinian dialogism approach. We argue that a dialogism approach gets us beyond first order cybernetic (control) and second order (open) system thinking to a third order cybernetics (multi- dialogisms). We believe third order cybernetic theory is an extension of Bakhtin's work. We explore how dialogue is not equivalent to polyphonic dialogism; the later does not assume being in same time and space, as in some meeting. Further, we look at three other dialogisms (stylistic, chronotopic, & architectonic). Multi- dialogisms raise questions for dialog, learning, and appreciative inquiry approaches. We conclude with insights on …

Understanding The Plight Of The Terminally Ill Population, Richelle C. Bouska Jan 2005

Understanding The Plight Of The Terminally Ill Population, Richelle C. Bouska

Graduate Research Papers

The emotional, physical, social, and relational experiences of the terminally ill population were investigated. The literature strongly stated that the dying process, though physically and psychologically taxing, need not be devoid of meaning. It was also discovered that though patient disease trajectories and emotional experiences are highly individualized many helpful generalizations can be made. The research findings support the belief that mental health practitioners have much to offer the dying person as he or she wrestles with impending death.

Grief And Loss Associated With Divorce : A Counseling Perspective, Lisa A. Lydon Jan 2005

Grief And Loss Associated With Divorce : A Counseling Perspective, Lisa A. Lydon

Graduate Research Papers

Based on grief and loss literature, as well as literature on divorce, this paper examines divorce as a loss that evokes grief in various individuals. A brief definition of grief and loss is first articulated. An emphasis is,placed on the classifications of loss, such as major, physical, psychological, primary, and secondary loss. Divorce is discussed as a major and primary loss with multiple secondary losses associated with it. The perspectives of various professionals as they relate to divorce as a loss are examined. This paper also considers implications to counselors when divorce is viewed as a grief and loss issue.

The Effects Of Childhood Obesity On Self-Esteem, Heather L. Paxton Jan 2005

The Effects Of Childhood Obesity On Self-Esteem, Heather L. Paxton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Obesity is a growing health problem affecting children in the United States. The prevalence of obesity has increased dramatically over the past 10 years across virtually all populations and age groups. Recent data suggest that 15 percent of U.S. children are severely overweight or obese (National Center for Health Statistics, 2002) . Obese children are at risk for significant health problems, but also face many psychological and social consequences, including low self-esteem. Children who are obese face an increased risk of emotional problems lasting well into adulthood. Factors such as peer rejection, weight-related teasing, and internalized social standards play a …

The Segregated Distribution Of Middle Class African American Households In The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, Jay L. Newberry Jan 2005

The Segregated Distribution Of Middle Class African American Households In The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, Jay L. Newberry

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This research analyzes the residential distribution of middle-class African American households in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area to determine if the "middle class" status affords them greater integration with the dominant white group. Using 1990 and 2000 census income data for white and black households in the Pittsburgh MSA, lower, middle, and upper class categories were created in both groups for comparison against the black middle class category via five segregation indices. This research found that, although the African American households experience varying degrees of segregation by class, all are highly segregated from the white group with middle class African American …

Reconstructing Early Historical Landscapes In The Northern Santa Clara Valley, Alan K. Brown Jan 2005

Reconstructing Early Historical Landscapes In The Northern Santa Clara Valley, Alan K. Brown

Research Manuscript Series

The following essay, which is not a finished treatise upon any aspect of the early environmental history of the northern Santa Clara Valley, is also not intended to be a manual of procedures for investigating that subject. Although I would hope that elements ofboth purposes can be found here, the intention, more generally and tentatively, is to point out a few possibilities that may be incorporated into more rigorous and, in terms of practical consequences, more important future investigations by others. Because of the variety and incompleteness of the approaches that are followed here, no attempt has been made to …

Critical Race Realism: Re-Claiming The Antidiscrimination Principle Through The Doctrine Of Good Faith In Contract Law, Emily Houh Jan 2005

Critical Race Realism: Re-Claiming The Antidiscrimination Principle Through The Doctrine Of Good Faith In Contract Law, Emily Houh

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This Article employs what it calls "critical race realism" to theorize and propose a common law antidiscrimination claim that incorporates contemporary re-conceptualizations of antidiscrimination jurisprudence and grounds itself doctrinally not in civil rights law but in the contractually implied obligation of good faith. "Critical race realism" refers in part to this Article's explicit goal, in proposing the common law claim, to re-conceive explicitly the private law doctrine of good faith as one that might assist in effecting a public law norm of equality. By employing critical race realism, this Article hopes to help revive the controversy over what constitutes the …

The Relationship Between Parole And Recidivism In The Criminal Justice System, Jacquelin A. Robinson Jan 2005

The Relationship Between Parole And Recidivism In The Criminal Justice System, Jacquelin A. Robinson

McNair Scholars Journal

From 1990 to 1999 the criminal justice system experienced a fifty percent increase in the inmate population, which included recidivated parolees. Critics claimed the parole process was not working and lobbied legislature to take action. The system responded by decreasing parole agency budgets, increasing prison sentences, and reducing rehabilitation services for paroled inmates. Research pertaining to parole and recidivism indicates two variables: there is or isn’t a direct association. The objective of this study is to compare the data and decide if parole is a viable solution for decreasing recidivism rates.

The 2004 Claremont Debate: Lipsey Vs. Scriven, Stewart I. Donaldson, Christina A. Christie Jan 2005

The 2004 Claremont Debate: Lipsey Vs. Scriven, Stewart I. Donaldson, Christina A. Christie

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

While there is little disagreement about the need for, and value of, program evaluation, there remain major disagreements in the field about best practices (Donaldson & Lipsey, in press). For example, Donaldson and Scriven (2003) invited a diverse group of evaluators to Claremont in 2001 to share their visions for “how we should practice evaluation” in the new millennium. Theorists and practitioners discussed a wide range of views and evaluation approaches, many at odds with one another, on how best to improve evaluation practice (e.g., the experimental paradigm, evaluation as a transdiscipline, results-oriented management, empowerment evaluation, fourth generation evaluation, inclusive …
