The Social And Theological Implications Of Postmodern Holism In Community, Robin J. Dewhitt Apr 2005

The Social And Theological Implications Of Postmodern Holism In Community, Robin J. Dewhitt

Doctor of Ministry

The modern world has created for us a dichotomy in which the secular and religious worlds are divided along Cartesian lines. These Cartesian lines exist between church, the workplace, political life, social life, and any other arena in which a philosophical distinction can be demonstrated. The result is that not only has society been divided, but also each individual person has been divided into multiple distinct areas of life. 1 With the onset of the postmodern era, we have begun to reformulate our worldview along the lines of holism. Holism has been defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as, "The …

Www.Church: Consulting With 19th And 20th Century Congregations In A 21st Century World, Earl James Price Apr 2005

Www.Church: Consulting With 19th And 20th Century Congregations In A 21st Century World, Earl James Price

Doctor of Ministry

A new pastor is called and excitement is high. Both the pastor and the congregation begin this journey with high hopes and expectations. Yet too often things get off track quickly and people are left wondering what happened and why aren't things going in the direction we hoped? The problem comes from a failure to understand the unique nature of a faith community. Understanding the nature includes an understanding of the roles of and the relationship between values, vision and mission in charting a course to the future of their ministry together. This failure in understanding also presents itself when …

A Network Of Congregations: Congregation Size In The Church Of The Nazarene, Kenneth E. Crow

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Thinking of Nazarene congregations as an interdependent, mutually supportive network prompts a consideration of the value, contributions, and challenges of congregations in a variety of sizes and settings. This report examines elements of this network of churches, especially the nature and effects of congregation size.

Reasonable Partiality And Animal Ethics, Bernard E. Rollin Apr 2005

Reasonable Partiality And Animal Ethics, Bernard E. Rollin

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

Moral psychology is often ignored in ethical theory, making applied ethics difficult to achieve in practice. This is particularly true in the new field of animal ethics. One key feature of moral psychology is recognition of the moral primacy of those with whom we enjoy relationships of love and friendship -philia in Aristotle's term. Although a radically new ethic for animal treatment is emerging in society, its full expression is severely limited by our exploitative uses of animals. At this historical moment, only the animals with whom we enjoy philia - companion animals - can be treated with unrestricted moral …

Profile: Becoming--Stories Of Discovery And Growth, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

Colleges, too, have opportunities to define and move into their futures, although rarely as dramatically as first year students. As this issue of Profile documents, this is such a moment for UMM. Physically, our campus has changed remarkably in the past few years, and will be continuing to develop in the next few, as we complete the Social Science renovation project, the biomass heating/cooling plant and the new athletic field. Two areas covered in the pages that follow represent particularly exciting and dramatic moves for our college into its future.

Subsidiary Initiative And Strategic Choice In Indian Software Subsidiaries Of Multinational Corporations, Rishikesha T Krishnan Apr 2005

Subsidiary Initiative And Strategic Choice In Indian Software Subsidiaries Of Multinational Corporations, Rishikesha T Krishnan

Working Papers

In this paper, we investigate subsidiary initiative and strategic choice in the context of Indian software subsidiaries of multinational corporations. Contrary to earlier research, we find that high levels of subsidiary initiative are associated with subsidiaries that have low levels of integration and high levels of autonomy. We also find a new trend in the organizational arrangements of software subsidiaries within multinationals in that some multinational parents are allowing subsidiaries to chart their own destiny in return for a dilution of a part ( or whole) of their stake in the subsidiary.

Impact Of Life Stages And Career Stages On Employee Job Performance: A Review, Smita Chattopadhyay, Amit Gupta Apr 2005

Impact Of Life Stages And Career Stages On Employee Job Performance: A Review, Smita Chattopadhyay, Amit Gupta

Working Papers

A career is a life-long process, that includes the preparation for, and choice of an occuption. One's present job is just one of a sequence of work experiences encompassed by a career. It has often been seen that employees who occupy similar positions in an organizations may have completely different interests, goals and job expectations. Research in sociology, clinical psychology and vocational psychology suggests that people go through life stages and career stages that affect their job attitudes, work perceptions and performance.

Contradictions In Irish Academic Research, Stephen Jerrams, John Donovan Apr 2005

Contradictions In Irish Academic Research, Stephen Jerrams, John Donovan

Articles

The conditions that govern academic research vary greatly from country to country and research in the Republic of Ireland was and remains markedly different from that of its larger European neighbours and the United States. Despite the quality of its education system and the excellent reputation of its universities, until recently Ireland had relatively low levels of academic research. Pinnacles of excellence could be found in certain disciplines, but state funding was low and issues relating to industrial collaborations, international partnerships, commercialisation and the exploitation of Intellectual Property (IP) rarely arose. Even today the Irish Government’s spending on academic research, …

Correlated Mortality Risks Of Siblings In Kenya: An Examination Of The Concept Of Death Clustering And A Model For Analysis, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba, Roderic Beaujot, Rajulton Fernando Apr 2005

Correlated Mortality Risks Of Siblings In Kenya: An Examination Of The Concept Of Death Clustering And A Model For Analysis, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba, Roderic Beaujot, Rajulton Fernando

PSC Discussion Papers Series

This paper uses the 1998 Kenya DHS to examine the correlation of mortality risks across siblings. Previously, the random-effect parameter in the random model has been interpreted in terms of unmeasured and unmeasurable factors, suggesting the presence of death clustering. This interpretation is problematic because the concept of unobserved heterogeneity is not the same as death clustering. This paper attempts to clarify the concept of death clustering and demonstrates that the concept needs to be closely associated, and therefore examined, with the sequence of births and deaths in a family. Earlier approaches have been insensitive to sequencing both in the …

Changing Childhood Mortality Conditions In Kenya: An Examination Of Levels, Trends And Determinants In The Late 1980s And The 1990s, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba Apr 2005

Changing Childhood Mortality Conditions In Kenya: An Examination Of Levels, Trends And Determinants In The Late 1980s And The 1990s, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba

PSC Discussion Papers Series

This paper examines the observed reversal in childhood mortality conditions in Kenya since the late 1980s, and the determinants of child mortality. Data from the 1998 Demographic and Health Survey are used to achieve these two objectives. Direct estimation techniques are used to examine regional levels and trends of mortality since the 1980s. It is clear from these analyses that regional mortality levels in Kenya are quite diversified. Nyanza has the highest mortality among children, while Central has the lowest. Although, mortality increased in the country in the early 1990s, most of the increases occurred in Nyanza province. Weibull hazard …

Moving Forward: Negotiating Self And External Circumstances In Recovery, Joanna Ochocka, Geoffrey Nelson, Rich Janzen

Psychology Faculty Publications

This article presents a framework for understanding the concept of recovery from serious mental illnesses and other life struggles. The framework is based on findings from a longitudinal, qualitative study that involved in-depth interviews with 28 people who experienced serious mental health challenges. The purpose of this article is to clarify the concept of recovery by presenting a grounded theory analysis of the components of recovery. The framework recognizes the experiences of struggle constructed through the words of study participants and captures four main components of recovery: a) a drive to move forward, b) a spiral of positive and negative …
