Relationship Of The Pillars Of Character And At-Risk Behaviors In Middle School Students, Steven A. Joyal May 2005

Relationship Of The Pillars Of Character And At-Risk Behaviors In Middle School Students, Steven A. Joyal

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze data to determine the effectiveness of the Character Counts! education program taught in a mid-sized midwestern public school district. Four independent evaluators compared the Six Pillars of Character to questions from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). Four research questions asked whether differences of the YRBS scores of risk behavior related to the character pillars of Character Counts! as linked by the independent evaluators. Questions asked whether there were differences in middle-school student scores from 2001 to 2003 as measured by the YRBS, between males and females, and whether there was a …

Do You See What I See? The Impact Of Delsarte On Silent Film Acting, Hilary Hart Apr 2005

Do You See What I See? The Impact Of Delsarte On Silent Film Acting, Hilary Hart

Mime Journal

Delsarte’s influence over American oratory, theatrical training, and dance has long been established. Should cinema be added to this list of fields shaped by American Delsartism? Those who received Delsartean training, either professionally or in public school oratory classes, most certainly found their way into filmmaking, as actors and directors. An examination of the context into which Americans enthusiastically embraced Delsarte’s ideas reveals that Americans shared the following precepts regarding the experience and representation of human emotions: emotions have universal expression; the job of the artist is to study these universal expressions; hitting upon a universal emotional expression is the …

Civil Religion In The Interfaith Context Of Northern California: Revisiting Robert Bellah's Broken Covenant Project, Harlan Stelmach Apr 2005

Civil Religion In The Interfaith Context Of Northern California: Revisiting Robert Bellah's Broken Covenant Project, Harlan Stelmach

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Are there signs of new emerging myths and stories about our religious self-understanding as a nation that will help us address what Robert Bellah calls, our "third time of trial"? On and off for many years, I have been interested in the questions raised by Robert Bellah's work on civil religion. Specifically, I have sought answers to the above question posed in the last Chapter of Broken Covenant, "The Birth of New American Myths." Perhaps to be more precise about my interest in this question, I would at least have to go back to my graduate student days in Berkeley …

A Comparison Of Parametric And Coarsened Bayesian Interval Estimation In The Presence Of A Known Mean-Variance Relationship, Kent Koprowicz, Scott S. Emerson, Peter Hoff Apr 2005

A Comparison Of Parametric And Coarsened Bayesian Interval Estimation In The Presence Of A Known Mean-Variance Relationship, Kent Koprowicz, Scott S. Emerson, Peter Hoff

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

While the use of Bayesian methods of analysis have become increasingly common, classical frequentist hypothesis testing still holds sway in medical research - especially clinical trials. One major difference between a standard frequentist approach and the most common Bayesian approaches is that even when a frequentist hypothesis test is derived from parametric models, the interpretation and operating characteristics of the test may be considered in a distribution-free manner. Bayesian inference, on the other hand, is often conducted in a parametric setting where the interpretation of the results is dependent on the parametric model. Here we consider a Bayesian counterpart to …

Learning For All, Barry Cohen Apr 2005

Learning For All, Barry Cohen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that all students acquired similar learned material without considering their socioeconomic background. Through social interaction and technology, the intern provided an environment of equal learning between both groups. Through a case study, both third grade groups identified one's academic, cultural, economic, and historical backgrounds. In addition, this study demonstrated that the teachers' expectations were vital in the students' learning process. By setting attainable expectations, both groups were exposed to an academic and social learning experience.
