Corporate Governance In The Era Of Sarbanes-Oxley: Governance Types And Trust Dynamics, Larry W. Ettner
Corporate Governance In The Era Of Sarbanes-Oxley: Governance Types And Trust Dynamics, Larry W. Ettner
Student Scholarship
This research focused on corporate independent directors and senior executive officers: their perceptions of Sarbanes-Oxley; their roles and responsibilities as officers and directors; how board relationships have transformed as a result of Sarbanes-Oxley; and how the CEO-board and board member-board member trust dynamics impact the management of the board. Implicit in Sarbanes-Oxley is agency theory and the responsibility of independent directors to monitor and control management. The central findings are that independent directors and executive officers are culturally adapting to the new institutional environment of Sarbanes-Oxley, and their new relationship is characterized by "creative tension" whereby distinct and separate roles …
An Institutional Theory Perspective: Corporate Responses To Section 404 Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Richard R. Clune
An Institutional Theory Perspective: Corporate Responses To Section 404 Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Richard R. Clune
Student Scholarship
Institutional theory is explored as a way of explaining Section 404 first year experiences as the constituents set about to socially construct the law that regulates them. The normative pressure from the professional network of consultants emerges as most influential. By examining the Section 404 process in this fashion, it focuses attention as to whether the external auditors, taking turns as consultants at their competitors' external audit clients, drove the Section 404 compliance process and in a manner that resulted in perceived protection for them but with less than optimal benefit for their clients. Perhaps this study's results open up …
Juvenile Fear Of Crime And Attitudes Towards The Police: The Effect Of Implementing A School Resource Officer Program In Alaska High Schools, Sean A. Case
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents data concerning the effect uniformed police officers have on attitudes towards the police and fear of crime within the high school setting. Two identical surveys were administered to 522 high school students at two periods during a school year. The primary purpose was to determine whether placing uniformed police officers, called School Resource Officers, in high schools would improve attitudes towards the police and reduce the fear of crime. Although opinions towards the police were positively affected and the fear of crime was reduced, neither was affected significantly. The primary implication drawn from this research is that …

"Joined In The Battle Of Common Humanity": Irish Nationalism And Labor Organizing In Scranton, Pennsylvania, 1876-1883, Timothy Robert Donnelly
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The lrish-Catholic working-class of Scranton, Pennsylvania used social networks fanned in Irish nationalist organizations to expand the men's labor movement between 1879 and 1883. Formed in 1879, the Irish National Land League worked for land reform in Ireland and called on Irish-Americans to serve as fund-raisers for the cause. The Land League prospered in the Scranton area drawing into its ranks many Iiish-Americans that worked in the anthracite coal mines. The Knights of Labor, lend by Scranton native Terence V. Powderly, had established multiple local assemblies in the region, but had a difficult time recruiting hi sh-Catholic members. Leaders of …

The first chapter by Tarek Badawy and Abdallah Khalil gives the essence of …
Providing Health Care Information To Refugees In Cairo: Questions Of Access And Integration, Emily K. Eidenier
Providing Health Care Information To Refugees In Cairo: Questions Of Access And Integration, Emily K. Eidenier
Faculty Journal Articles
This paper began as an investigation into medical services currently offered to refugees in Cairo. The ultimate goal was to update the medical section of the Refugee Yellow Pages , an on-line information resource available through the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies department at the American University in Cairo. The impetus for this project was the idea that the provision of up-to-date listings of service providers was vital to refugees’ access to social services, including health care. In the course of my research I discovered that while information does play a large role in an individual’s ability to access health …

Learning And Application Of Range Management Innovations Among Ranchers In West-Central Colorado, Caroline A. Kennedy
Learning And Application Of Range Management Innovations Among Ranchers In West-Central Colorado, Caroline A. Kennedy
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Like many ranchers in the West, ranchers in West-Central Colorado are reevaluating their management strategies in the face of forces like drought, rising land prices, and encroaching development. While ranchers seek answers on alternative management strategies, research and Extension personnel search for adequate means of diffusing needed information. Relative to many rural western communities, ranchers in West-Central Colorado show high interest in alternative range management ideas, and many implement changes to their ranch management based on these ideas. This can partially be attributed to a unique support system of Extension and agency personnel with effective, untraditional outreach and land-management approaches. …
Associations Between Parent-Daughter Relationships, Individual Adolescent Psychological Functioning, And Female Adolescent Self-Defeating Behaviors, Sara M. Hunt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study tested a mediation model by which daughters ' perceptions of poorer parent-adolescent relationship quality were expected to be directly associated with the individual psychological characteristics of low self-esteem and internalizing symptoms. In turn, individual psychological characteristics were hypothesized to predict self-defeating behavior, defined as deliberate self-harm and suicidal gestures, multiple sexual partners, and substance use. Additionally, the association between parent-adolescent relationship variables and self-defeating behaviors was posited to be largely indirect and mediated by symptoms of psychological distress. As predicted, perceived alienation from parents was directly associated with poor adolescent psychological functioning. Furthermore, individual psychological variables were found …

Researching From The Inside - Does It Compromise Validity? - A Discussion, Pauline Rooney
Researching From The Inside - Does It Compromise Validity? - A Discussion, Pauline Rooney
Journal Articles
The concept of validity in social research is the subject of much debate. It is a complex and problematic issue, especially because it is difficult to define validity. In traditional studies, validity usually referred to the degree to which the study accurately reflected the issue or topic that the research was attempting to measure (Feldman 2003). More specifically, this type of validity also referred to the role of research instruments and their appropriateness for collecting data that answers the research questions (Black and Champion 1976). Such positivist accounts assumed that science could produce objective knowledge and thus the researcher's goal …

Views Of Teaching And Research In Economics And Other Disciplines, William Walstad, Sam Allgood
Views Of Teaching And Research In Economics And Other Disciplines, William Walstad, Sam Allgood
College of Business: Faculty Publications
Anecdotes are often quite suggestive. A graduate student in economics who was serving as a teaching assistant once reported that his major professor came into his office and told him that he was spending too much of his time helping his undergraduate students and not enough time on his research. Was the professor expressing a preference for time spent on teaching over research? Or was the professor suggesting to the student that the academic market rewards research more than teaching? Regardless, the underlying message that gets transferred from such an experience, as early as graduate education and perhaps throughout a …
Disciplining P-12 Public School Personnel For Off-Duty Conduct : An Analysis Of The Judicial Response., Ruth Louise Davison 1965-
Disciplining P-12 Public School Personnel For Off-Duty Conduct : An Analysis Of The Judicial Response., Ruth Louise Davison 1965-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The right to discipline a P-12 public school employee for off-duty conduct remains unclear. Historically, society has held teachers up to a higher standard of conduct than persons in most other professions. The researcher traced the teacher-as-role-model theory back to antiquity. The literature further indicated that courts often rely on the role model theory when deciding judicial challenges based on adverse employment decisions. Courts also refer to the nexus theory, demanding that a relationship exist between off-duty conduct and the job. The following research question guided this study: When is it legal for P-12 public school employers to discipline employees …
The Alternatives To Detention Program : Assessment Of One Kentucky County's Efforts To Deinstitutionalize Status Offenders., Arthur Hayden
The Alternatives To Detention Program : Assessment Of One Kentucky County's Efforts To Deinstitutionalize Status Offenders., Arthur Hayden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the beginning of the juvenile justice movement in the United States over a century ago, considerable debate has persisted among policymakers and practitioners concerning the causes of juvenile offending and the appropriate responses to control it. Although the juvenile justice system was conceived and developed to provide individualized, benevolent treatment to young offenders, the system has gradually shifted to resemble a more punitive, adult criminal justice model. While presently the system includes characteristics of both the juvenile and adult justice models, future directions are uncertain. This is problematic for young offenders who need and deserve more solicitous care in …

Revealing The Myths : Jeanette Winterson's New Space Of Body, Love And Narrative In Written On The Body, Bonnie Cara Glasser
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This thesis derives from my interest in the way in which we read and understand novels. We may not consciously realize that we are socially conditioned to read and translate texts in certain ways. Until I started writing this paper, I did not realize the influence that social conditioning had on me when I read. Now that I am more aware of this influence, I am more careful about how I read. I realize that I should not read certain issues within texts as natural, but to think of them as constructions created to serve a specific purpose.

Retesting A Model Of The Deming Management Method, Jesse Barfield, Caroline Fisher, Jing Li, Rajiv Mehta
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Anderson et al. (1994) developed a model of the theory of quality management underlying the Deming management method; Anderson et al. (1995) tested that model using path analysis. They used data from an existing database collected from 41 manufacturing plants in the electronics, machinery, and transportation industries with 100 or more employees. In this study, which retests their model, data were gathered from over 100 manufacturing and service companies of all sizes across the US and Canada. The measures used in the original study were modified to apply to both service and manufacturing organizations. The data were analysed using similar …

Mining Mobile Group Patterns: A Trajectory-Based Approach, San-Yih Hwang, Ying-Han Liu, Jeng-Kuen Chiu, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we present a group pattern mining approach to derive the grouping information of mobile device users based on a trajectory model. Group patterns of users are determined by distance threshold and minimum time duration. A trajectory model of user movement is adopted to save storage space and to cope with untracked or disconnected location data. To discover group patterns, we propose ATGP algorithm and TVG-growth that are derived from the Apriori and VG-growth algorithms respectively.

Racist comments made by some youths have spawned many reactions from Singaporeans. This presents another interesting issue: Do these reactions themselves evince the kind of intolerance of a diversity of opinions which they are attacking? When and how can we differ without being intolerant and disrespectful?

The Communication Studies Researcher And The Communication Studies Indexes, David C. Tyler, Signe Swanson, Susan M. Leach
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
The existence of widely available large, multi-subject, online databases calls into question the necessity for small, discipline-specific indexes to support research. This study attempts to determine whether the online Communication Studies indexes provide access to the journal literature that researchers in the field actually cite and whether, where the current journal literature is concerned, that access is in any way superior to that provided by large, multi-subject, online indexes.
Heuristic Research Study: Implications For Art Therapy In Smoking Cessation, Sarah Roberts
Heuristic Research Study: Implications For Art Therapy In Smoking Cessation, Sarah Roberts
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
This study explored the implications for the use of art therapy in smoking cessation, using a heuristic research design. The participant is a 22-year-old female smoker currently enrolled in the graduate art therapy program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. The data in this study consisted of spontaneous art expressions, audio-recordings, and visual and written journal entries throughout smoking cessation. Audio-voice recordings were made during art making and were followed by reflective writings about the art-making experience. Over an 8-week time period the researcher refrained from smoking and relapsed on three occasions. Each period of smoking cessation and relapse was considered …
Administrative Law Goes To War, Cass R. Sunstein
Administrative Law Goes To War, Cass R. Sunstein
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
What are the President’s war-making powers? This essay, a brief reply to an article by Curtis Bradley and Jack Goldsmith, contends that the answer lies in administrative law, at least in the first instance. The President’s authority often depends on what Congress has said, and under established principles, the President has a great deal of power to interpret ambiguities in congressional enactments – in war no less than in peace. The principal qualifications involve interpretive principles, also found in administrative law, that call for a narrow construction of presidential authority to invade constitutionally sensitive interests. The relevant arguments are illustrated …

Against Prediction: Sentencing, Policing, And Punishing In An Actuarial Age, Bernard E. Harcourt
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Actuarial methods—i.e. the use of statistical rather than clinical methods on large datasets of criminal offending rates to determine different levels of offending associated with one or more group traits, in order to (1) predict past, present or future criminal behavior and (2) administer a criminal justice outcome—now permeate the criminal law and its enforcement. With the single exception of racial profiling against African- Americans and Hispanics, most people view the turn to the actuarial as efficient, rational, and wealth-maximizing. The fact is, law enforcement agencies can detect more crime with the same resources if they investigate citizens who are …

Broken Windows: New Evidence From New York City And A Five-City Social Experiment, Bernard E. Harcourt, Jens Ludwig
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
In 1982, James Q. Wilson and George Kelling suggested in an influential article in the Atlantic Monthly that targeting minor disorder could help reduce more serious crime. More than 20 years later, the three most populous cities in the U.S.—New York, Chicago and, most recently, Los Angeles—have all adopted at least some aspect of Wilson and Kelling’s theory, primarily through more aggressive enforcement of minor misdemeanor laws. Remarkably little, though, is currently known about the effect of broken windows policing on crime. According to a recent National Research Council report, existing research does not provide strong support for the broken …
