Developing New Knowledge From Health-Care Industry Quality Practices To Identify And Report Patient Incidents, Anna H. Gibson
Developing New Knowledge From Health-Care Industry Quality Practices To Identify And Report Patient Incidents, Anna H. Gibson
Student Scholarship
The focus of this study is to develop a sense of managements' approach to removing medical error or occurrence reporting barriers within their hospital system. Managers perceive leadership, communication, policy changes, procedure changes, education, training, and feedback as fundamental approaches. Yet, scholarly research indicates a reporting barrier can be attributed a lack of feedback to staff on previously reported errors. The staff not only desires constructive feedback, but views feedback as a means to learn from mistakes. The study findings indicate there are three levels of feedback. Although institutional and managerial feedback is provided, what appears to be missing is …
The Ad Hoc International Criminal Tribunals And A Jurisprudence Of The Deviant, Maya Steinitz
The Ad Hoc International Criminal Tribunals And A Jurisprudence Of The Deviant, Maya Steinitz
Faculty Scholarship
This short article is a synopsis of a doctoral thesis entitled Law as Communication: A Concept of International Law. Embedded in the legal theory of philosopher Joseph Raz - who argued that "whatever else the law is, it either claims legitimate authority, is held to possess it, or both" - this analysis of international law's claim of legitimate authority is based on an ethnographic study of the International Criminal Tribunals for the former- Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
The analysis of international law's claim of legitimate authority, which uses semiotics and performance-studies perspective, is then used as a basis for an examination …

This paper presents a research-based conceptual model respectively linking three dimensions of religious experience (religious practices, spiritual beliefs, and faith community) with three dimensions of health (biological, psychological, and social). The model is used as a framework to highlight findings in the religion-health knowledge base and to provide a broad survey of this domain of inquiry. Considerations for future research on religion and health are addressed.

The Formation Of Social Networks In New Urban Communities- Case Study: New Borg Al-Arab City, Fatma Helaly
Archived Theses and Dissertations
New communities have not yet received the attention of researchers, and especially, sociologists, as they are considered to be 'less authentic', nor has the concept of social networks in such new communities been dealt with yet. What the different types of social networks are, and how they are formed in such communities is the main objective of this thesis, taking the city of New Borg Al Arab as a case study. The formation of social networks is affected by social status, such as urban/ rural background, age, gender, educational level, life cycle, etc..
Some examples of new communities in Egypt …
Long-Term Economic Hardship And Non-Mainstream Voting In Canada, Andrea M.L. Perrella
Long-Term Economic Hardship And Non-Mainstream Voting In Canada, Andrea M.L. Perrella
Political Science Faculty Publications
Canadian voting behaviour from 1979 to 2000 is examined by relating long-term economic changes to support for “non-mainstream” parties, defined as parties other than the Liberals or Progressive Conservatives. This long-term perspective is unique, in that standard economic voting research focuses mostly on how short-term economic changes affect support levels for the incumbent. In order to illustrate the effects of long-term economic decline, federal voting results are related with short- and long-term economic data, namely unemployment and labour-force participation rates, all aggregated at the provincial level. The pooled data produces results that confirm the relevance of short-term changes to explain …
The Importance Of Information To Repatriation Decision-Making: The Sudanese Refugees In Cairo And Their Main Sources Of Information, Eline Sophie Vorland Holen
The Importance Of Information To Repatriation Decision-Making: The Sudanese Refugees In Cairo And Their Main Sources Of Information, Eline Sophie Vorland Holen
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The UNHCR Handbook on Voluntary Repatriations, as well as Executive Committee Conclusions, highlights the importance of adequate information upon evaluating repatriation. Nonetheless, few studies have concentrated on how refugees collect and evaluate available information regarding conditions in country of origin, and whether the accessible information is adequate to make an informed decision on repatriation.
This thesis analyses how southern Sudanese refugees in Cairo collect, evaluate, and use information about conditions in Sudan when they evaluate the possibilities of a return to Sudan. Five sources of information are available to the refugee community: the general Sudanese community in Cairo, including newcomers …
Social Class And Art Therapy, Heather B. Ring
Social Class And Art Therapy, Heather B. Ring
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
Research regarding social class and its effects is limited in mental health services, including art therapy. The purpose of this study was to increase awareness about social class differences and their effects on therapeutic services by exploring how social class impacts adolescents’ attitudes and approach toward artmaking as a form of expression and communication. Two artmaking workshops were conducted with two groups of adolescents from contrasting socioeconomic settings. A sample of 14 volunteers participated. It was hypothesized that adolescents from both groups would use art as an effective and desirable means of personal communication and expression.
Results are based on …
The Evolution Of Our Preferences: Evidence From Capuchin-Monkey Trading Behavior, Keith M. Chen, Venkat Lakshminarayanan, Laurie Santos
The Evolution Of Our Preferences: Evidence From Capuchin-Monkey Trading Behavior, Keith M. Chen, Venkat Lakshminarayanan, Laurie Santos
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Behavioral economics has demonstrated systematic decision-making biases in both lab and field data. But are these biases learned or innate? We investigate this question using experiments on a novel set of subjects — capuchin monkeys. By introducing a fiat currency and trade to a capuchin colony, we are able to recover their preferences over a wide range of goods and risky choices. We show that standard price theory does a remarkably good job of describing capuchin purchasing behavior; capuchin monkeys react rationally to both price and wealth shocks. However, when capuchins are faced with more complex choices including risky gambles, …

Police And Democracy, David Alan Sklansky
Police And Democracy, David Alan Sklansky
Michigan Law Review
Part I of the Article describes the emergence in postwar America of a particular understanding of a democracy, an understanding generally referred to as "democratic pluralism," "analytic pluralism," "pluralist theory," or simply "pluralism." We will spend a fair bit of time unpacking pluralism, because its fine points will prove important when we turn to the task of tracing its reflections in criminal procedure. That task is taken up in Part II, which examines the ways in which the central tenets of democratic pluralism found echoes in criminal procedure - construed broadly to include not only jurisprudence and legal scholarship but …

International Development Donors And Non-Governmental Organizations: "An Exploratory Pilot Study For The Relationship Dynamics Within The Egyptian Development Context", Dalia Salah El-Noury
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis attempts to explore the relationship, both real and perceived, between international development donors and NGOs within the Egyptian development context, and examines how the relation affects development work. The interaction with governmental organizations, and how these influence the relationship is also reflected in this study. The research traces the evolution of development theories and foreign aid prior to examining foreign aid in the local Egyptian context and the NGOs working environment.
This research fieldwork was conducted through semi structured interviews and a formal questionnaire, though only a part of the sample answered the questionnaire, on two foreign donors …

Through The Lens Of Postmodernism: Uniqueness Of The Anorectic Families, Zenobia C.Y. Chan, Joyce L.C. Ma
The Qualitative Report
This paper challenges the monolithic assumption of the anorectic families in Hong Kong by blindly adopting the western theoretical framework of family therapy. It is problematic that family therapy lacks indigenous culture-specific knowledge and ignores the voices of these multi-categories of families. It is inappropriate to conceptualize these families as being similar and to stereotype them as experiencing particular difficulties. In order to bridge the homogeneity and address the multiplicity of these families, the paper examines both the ideologies of postmodernism and the process of confession that can enrich the understanding of anorectic families and advance family practice. The paper …

Maps And Meaning: Reading The Map Of The Holy Land, Noga Collins-Kreiner
The Qualitative Report
The research methods of hermeneutics and semiotics were used to analyze maps of the Holy Land. The main conclusion of this study is how those methods could help us to read and understand maps. Other issues of concern are which religious elements actually appear and their form of representation in the range of maps. Narratives identified on the various maps were the holy Christian narrative- which proved the most dominant, the Jewish narrative and the Muslim narrative that was rarely found in the maps, even in those with a Palestinian narrative. A ubiquitous finding was disregarded for political issues, although …

Whatever Happened To Lisa Simpson? An Exploration Of Female Adolescent Development Through Problem Based Learning, Amy Perrault
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
As a teacher for the past six years in a girls’ school, I have met and had the chance to interact with hundreds of adolescent girls. Over time I have come to realize how much adolescence seems to have changed since I was in their shoes. The media inundates them with messages about what is cool, hip, and acceptable—music videos, fashion, and the internet provide the frame of reference against which today’s young woman compares her own self worth. While girls have always looked to society’s standards to help them develop as individuals, at no time in history have the …

This paper chronicles my development as a multicultural picture book writer, with a manuscript as an illustration of this process. I see myself emerging from within since joining the Critical and Creative Thinking Program. My journey actually started a few years before enrolling in the program. As an adult, I wanted to explore my life-long fascination with books, and to discover if I could write a book of my own. Using the various CCT coursework, I was able to peel off the many layers of obstacles that prevented me from realizing my dream. Using the power of reflective thinking, I …

The Affective Sustainability Of Objects; A Search For Causal Connections., Kristina Börjesson
Nordes Conference Series
This trans-disciplinary research project aims to answer 2 vital questions concerning the ‘timeless’ object: 1. Can designers’ way of thinking be enlarged and deepened to include the knowledge how to make an object retain its significance over time in a changing human context? 2. Will designers’ way of thinking thus further developed contribute in a substantial way to an improved and more holistic view on sustainability? ‘Affective sustainability’ doesn’t belong to established terminology and didn’t exist when these research questions were formulated. It has grown out of ongoing research but its relevance is still explored. The compressed results of the …

Why Research-Oriented Design Isn’T Design-Oriented Research, Daniel Fallman
Nordes Conference Series
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is the discipline concerned with the design, evaluation, and implementation of interactive computing systems. Typically, HCI researchers do not primarily study existing technologies, styles of interaction, or interface solutions. On the contrary, one of the core activities in contemporary HCI is to design new technologies—prototypes—that act as vehicles through which the researchers’ ideas for novel and alternative solutions materialize and take on concrete shape.
