Preferred Learning Styles For Respiratory Care Students At Texas State University – San Marcos, Chris Russian Oct 2005

Preferred Learning Styles For Respiratory Care Students At Texas State University – San Marcos, Chris Russian

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Academic success includes setting goals, effective time management, and the match of teaching methods to learning style. It also depends on the educator and the manner in which material is presented. Learning style influences the retention of information and the depth of comprehension. If educators present material in a style that matches a student’s preferred learning style, then academic performance may improve. Assessing learning styles will benefit the student and the educator. Material retention will improve, thus improving test scores and limiting remediation. It is also important to determine if students, as a group, fit into a particular style or …

Being Creative In Vincentian Leadership: The Case Of The Society Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Eduardo Marques Oct 2005

Being Creative In Vincentian Leadership: The Case Of The Society Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Eduardo Marques

Vincentian Studies

The purpose of this paper is to present an example of an international society based on Vincentian leadership principles which has been in existence for 180 years. I intend to introduce my concept of a model of Vincentian leadership and present an overview and evolution of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVdP). Subsequently, an analysis of the adequacy of the Society as a model of Vincentian leadership is offered, articulating the sustainability of the Society based on this model. Finally, based on the SVdP experience, some recommendations are proposed to DePaul University’s project on Vincentian leadership.

The Role Of Women And The Vincentian Culturescape, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C. Oct 2005

The Role Of Women And The Vincentian Culturescape, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Betty Ann McNeil “considers examples of the primary strategies and resources that Vincentian leaders have used to empower others to commit themselves to mission and to communicate the founding charism across boundaries of time and cultures.” Her focus is on the contributions that women have made to the Vincentian culturescape. Daughters of Charity and Sisters of Charity who have had major roles in passing the charism down through their communities are profiled. McNeil writes that one way the charism is successfully handed on is through stories of individuals who lived it. In particular, Elizabeth Seton’s introduction of the charism to …

Ranking Inequality: Applications Of Multivariate Subset Selection, William C. Horrace, Joseph T. Marchand, Timothy M. Smeeding Oct 2005

Ranking Inequality: Applications Of Multivariate Subset Selection, William C. Horrace, Joseph T. Marchand, Timothy M. Smeeding

Center for Policy Research

Inequality measures are often presented in the form of a rank ordering to highlight their relative magnitudes. However, a rank ordering may produce misleading inference, because the inequality measures themselves are statistical estimators with different standard errors, and because a rank ordering necessarily implies multiple comparisons across all measures. Within this setting, if differences between several inequality measures are simultaneously and statistically insignificant, the interpretation of the ranking is changed. This study uses a multivariate subset selection procedure to make simultaneous distinctions across inequality measures at a pre-specified confidence level. Three applications of this procedure are explored using country-level data …

Cigarette Smoking Among Low-Income African Americans: A Serious Public Health Problem, Jorge Delva, Marisol Tellez, Tracy L. Finlayson, Kimberlee A. Gretebeck, Kristine Siefert, David R. Williams, Amid I. Ismail

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background

This study examines the current prevalence of cigarette smoking and the number of cigarettes smoked in a community-based sample of 1021 low-income African-American men and women.

Methods

Participants were selected using a two-stage, area probability sample design. Data were collected in 2002–2003 in face-to-face interviews and analyzed in 2005. All data and analyses were weighted to account for the complex sampling design.

Results

Fifty-nine percent of men and 41% of women were current smokers, with younger individuals apparently initiating smoking at an earlier age than older individuals.

Conclusions

The high prevalence of cigarette use provides further evidence that the …

The Voice: 2001-2011

This edition of the College of Wooster's student run newspaper was published on September 30 of 2005, and it is eight pages in length. On the 24th of September, the Wooster community gathered at the public square in protest of the Iraq War. A team has been formed by the Allies and Queers group for the 15th Annual Dr. John T. Carey Memorial AIDS Walk in the University Circle of Cleveland. This walk will take place on October 1. Lowry needs to open a bit earlier than it does during the week, and quite earlier on Sunday. The newest shoe …
