An Examination Of Social Workers' And Other Therapists' Use Of Transference And Countertransference As Therapeutic Tools In Couples Counselling Within The Psychoanalytic Paradigm, Heidi B. Gottlieb

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this study is to increase knowledge about therapeutic practices on the part of practitioners; specifically, the study asked social workers and other types of therapists who see couples about their awareness of, acknowledgment of, attitude toward, understanding of, and use of the psychoanalytic model and of the concepts of transference and countertransference, and to demonstrate to what extent they accurately comprehend the meaning and potential use of these concepts in their clinical practice. A survey/questionnaire was mailed to a large sample of social workers and other therapists in Ontario, and provided 941 responses. An included vignette gave …

Rights Myopia In Child Welfare, Clare Huntington Jan 2005

Rights Myopia In Child Welfare, Clare Huntington

Faculty Scholarship

For decades, legal scholars have debated the proper balance of parents' rights and children's rights in the child welfare system. This Article argues that the debate mistakenly privileges rights. Neither parents' rights nor children's rights serve families well because, as implemented, a solely rights-based model of child welfare does not protect the interests of parents or children. Additionally, even if well-implemented, the model still would not serve parents or children because it obscures the important role of poverty in child abuse and neglect and fosters conflict rather than collaboration between the state and families. In lieu of a solely rights-based …

Community Pastoral Care In Faith And Light: A Qualitative Study Of Perpetual Parenthood From A Pastoral Care And Counselling Perspective, Timothy William Dobbin Jan 2005

Community Pastoral Care In Faith And Light: A Qualitative Study Of Perpetual Parenthood From A Pastoral Care And Counselling Perspective, Timothy William Dobbin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Faith and Light is a Christian community that exists for people with an intellectual disability, their families and their friends, and that meets monthly to reflect on Scripture, to pray and to celebrate together. It promotes presence to one another and friendship amongst its members. This ethnographic study explored how parents from a local community experienced the "launching" phase of the family life cycle. Analysis of data from focus groups, from participant observation as a chaplain, and from informal interviews revealed particular aspects of parents experiences, including: challenges parents face, particularly with regard abuse and the need to advocate; concerns …

Media Messages About Body Image And Food: Adolescent Perceptions Of Contradictory Messages In Television Commercials, Carrie Wise

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study had two primary purposes, the first of which was to examine contemporary television media messages and to ascertain whether there exists an ideological contradiction between messages associated with ideal body types and messages associated with obesity. The second purpose was to explore adolescents' perceptions of these messages and to understand their possible effects on adolescents. This study was conducted using a fallibilitic realism methodological approach. Two data collection methods were used in this study. A content analysis of current television commercials was conducted, from which three major findings emerged. First, there was a high frequency of commercials containing …

'The Aids Is Coming And There Is Nowhere To Run...': Culture, Gender, And The Politics Of Kisongo Maasai Women And Girls' Vulnerability To Hiv/Aids (Immune Deficiency, Tanzania), V. Corey Wright

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis outlines the research findings and implications for practice generated from the, “A Gender Issue: Reducing the Vulnerability of Kisongo Maasai Girls to HIV/AIDS” project, which was a participatory action research (PAR) study in collaboration with the Kisongo Maasai in Northern Tanzania. The objectives of the study were to explore the factors that may contribute to girls’ vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, and develop a culturally-specific framework that may contribute to effective design and administration of program and policy-level interventions. The findings of this study illustrate the ‘politics of health’ that determine girls’ vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. It presents a cultural analysis …

This article offers a historically grounded account of the twists and turns in the Supreme Court's sentencing jurisprudence from the end of World War II to the Court's stunning rejection of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. The doctrinal shifts that have roiled this area of the law can best be understood as the Court's effort to respond to the changing political and social landscape of crime in America. In the mid 1970's, legislative activity in the criminal law was largely focused on Model Penal Code influenced recodification. In that era, the Supreme Court took power from an ascendant judiciary and gave …

College Students: Vulnerable To Hiv/Aids And The Least Educated?, Regine Rochelle Rucker Jan 2005

College Students: Vulnerable To Hiv/Aids And The Least Educated?, Regine Rochelle Rucker

Masters Theses

In the United States, women, African Americans, and youth are emerging as the face of HIV and AIDS. Since there is no cure, education and prevention is important to halting the spread of the disease. However, first, the current knowledge level of at risk populations, and others, must be revealed to appropriately address misconceptions and deficiencies in HIV awareness and ultimately change at risk behaviors. Many studies acknowledge the overall lack of HIV awareness, however, few identify and make recommendations to address the knowledge deficiencies, specifically in at risk populations. The following research statistically demonstrates that the knowledge of HIV/AIDS …

A Bibliotherapy Evaluation Tool: Grounding Counselors In The Therapeutic Use Of Literature, D. Pehrsson, P. S. Mcmillen

Library Faculty Research

The idea that the arts can benefit the emotional well-being of the observer, creator or reader has been around at least since Aristotle proposed the notion of emotional catharsis. Freud, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, acknowledged his intellectual debt to creative artists, suggesting that they, not he, had first discovered the unconscious (cited in Shrodes, 1950, p. 2). Certainly creative artists have become visible and valuable participants in the therapeutic milieu over the last century in the United States (Junge, 1994). Freud further suggested that, in the therapeutic process, “Storytellers are valuable allies and their testimony is to …

The Role And Relevancy Of The Black Church In Today's Society, Anthony Fitzgerald Harris

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to gather information about the role and the relevancy of the black church in regards to social issues in today's society. The significance of the study reflects many attitudes of the African-American community. It gives greater insight on the questions surrounding the differing roles of the black church. This study also gives some insight to churches on what the participants say makes the church relevant to them. With this information, churches can become more aware and capable of meeting the needs of the people in the community; The methods used were an in-depth qualitative …

Simulation-Based Two-Step Estimation With Endogenous Regressors, Kamhon Kan, Chihwa Kao Jan 2005

Simulation-Based Two-Step Estimation With Endogenous Regressors, Kamhon Kan, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

This paper considers models with latent/discrete endogenous regressors and presents a simulation-based two-step (STS) estimator. The endogeneity is corrected by adopting a simulation-based control function approach. The first step consists of simulating the residuals of the reduced-form equation for endogenous regressors. The second step is a regression model (linear, latent or discrete) with the simulated residual as an additional regressor. In this paper we develop the asymptotic theory for the STS estimator and its rate of convergence.

On The Estimation And Inference Of A Panel Cointegration Model With Cross-Sectional Dependence, Jushan Bai, Chihwa Kao Jan 2005

On The Estimation And Inference Of A Panel Cointegration Model With Cross-Sectional Dependence, Jushan Bai, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

Most of the existing literature on panel data cointegration assumes cross-sectional independence, an assumption that is difficult to satisfy. This paper studies panel cointegration under cross-sectional dependence, which is characterized by a factor structure. We derive the limiting distribution of a fully modified estimator for the panel cointegrating coefficients. We also propose a continuous-updated fully modified (CUP-FM) estimator). Monte Carlo results show that the CUP-FM estimator has better small sample properties than the two-step FM (2S-FM) and OLS estimators.

Do Credit Market Barriers Exist For Minority And Women Entrepreneurs?, Lloyd Blanchard, Bo Zhao, John Yinger Jan 2005

Do Credit Market Barriers Exist For Minority And Women Entrepreneurs?, Lloyd Blanchard, Bo Zhao, John Yinger

Center for Policy Research

This paper examines whether methodological deficiencies in the literature on discrimination in small business credit markets have a significant impact on the estimation of discrimination and provides a preliminary investigation into the causes of discrimination in these markets. We find substantial, statistically significant evidence of discrimination in loan approval against black-owned and Hispanic-owned businesses in 1998 with additional control variables, with a variety of different specifications, and with a simultaneous model of the application and loan-denial decisions. We also find that discrimination in small business lending may take the form of statistical discrimination, driven by lenders' stereotypes about the ability …

Joint Lm Test For Homoskedasticity In A One-Way Error Component Model, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Alain Pirotte Jan 2005

Joint Lm Test For Homoskedasticity In A One-Way Error Component Model, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Alain Pirotte

Center for Policy Research

This paper considers a general heteroskedastic error component model using panel data, and derives a joint LM test for homoskedasticity against the alternative of heteroskedasticity in both error components. It contrasts this joint LM test with marginal LM tests that ignore the heteroskedasticity in one of the error components. Monte Carlo results show that misleading inference can occur when using marginal rather than joint tests when heteroskedasticity is present in both components.

Ranking Inequality: Applications Of Multivariate Subset Selection, William C. Horrace, Joseph T. Marchand, Timothy M. Smeeding Jan 2005

Ranking Inequality: Applications Of Multivariate Subset Selection, William C. Horrace, Joseph T. Marchand, Timothy M. Smeeding

Center for Policy Research

Inequality measures are often presented in the form of a rank ordering to highlight their relative magnitudes. However, a rank ordering may produce misleading inference, because the inequality measures themselves are statistical estimators with different standard errors, and because a rank ordering necessarily implies multiple comparisons across all measures. Within this setting, if differences between several inequality measures are *simultaneously* and statistically insignificant, the interpretation of the ranking is changed. This study uses a multivariate subset selection procedure to make simultaneous distinctions across inequality measures at a pre-specified confidence level. Three applications of this procedure are explored using country-level data …

Community-Campus Partnerships For Economic Development: Community Perspectives, Anna Afshar Jan 2005

Community-Campus Partnerships For Economic Development: Community Perspectives, Anna Afshar

Partnerships/Community

What are community representatives saying about the value of community-campus partnerships (CCPs) for promoting economic development? CCPs are playing an increasingly visible role in neighborhood revitalization. More and more, we in the Community Affairs Unit of the Federal Reserve System find ourselves reporting on the outcomes of these collaborations. While community-campus engagements offer potential benefits for both communities and academic institutions, it has become clear to us that there is a shortage of narrative and analytical work clarifying how well these partnerships operate from the community perspective. This paper aims to help fill that gap.

Childhood Predictive And Protective Factors Of Adult Substance Abuse, Melissa A. Grossman Jan 2005

Childhood Predictive And Protective Factors Of Adult Substance Abuse, Melissa A. Grossman

Masters Theses

Psychological abuse in childhood is believed to have an affect on psychological wellbeing in adulthood, specifically in the area of substance abuse. Following the lead of studies in psychological abuse, substance abuse and protective factors, the present study examined the relationship between childhood psychological abuse and adult substance use, along with the role of protective factors in that relationship. Participants, consisting of college undergraduates, completed a series of measures of family cohesion, bonding, substance use, and psychological maltreatment. Although results did not show a relationship between childhood psychological abuse and adult substance abuse, family cohesion was shown to be related …

Community Mental Health Care In The U.S.: The Impact Of Deinstitutionalization And Assertive Community Treatment, Mariana A. De Oliveira Jan 2005

Community Mental Health Care In The U.S.: The Impact Of Deinstitutionalization And Assertive Community Treatment, Mariana A. De Oliveira

Masters Theses

The current review was designed to provide a better understanding of the present situation of mental health care in the U.S. Therefore, a review of the history of deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill in the U.S. and an exploration of the role of a prominent current model in mental health care, Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) were undertaken. Deinstitutionalization changed the paradigm of mental health care in the country. This process underwent different stages from religious based care, to large stated hospitals and to community care, where it stands now. Research articles on ACT in urban and in rural areas were …
