Spirits Of Defiance: National Prohibition And Jazz Age Literature, 1920-1933, Kathleen Morgan Drowne Jan 2005

Spirits Of Defiance: National Prohibition And Jazz Age Literature, 1920-1933, Kathleen Morgan Drowne

English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works

National Prohibition (1920-1933) ranks as one of the most divisive political controversies of the twentieth century, and its reverberations echoed through nearly every facet of American popular culture. Not surprisingly, many novelists and short story writers added their voices to this contentious public debate by incorporating into their works their interpretations of the wildly controversial federal liquor laws. In Spirits of Defiance, the first book to examine how American writers responded to the far-reaching effects of the Eighteenth Amendment, Kathleen Drowne analyzes the literary portrayals of bootleggers, moonshiners, revenuers, speakeasies, cabarets, and other specifically Prohibition-era characters and settings in a …

Network-Centric First Responder Architecture With Swarming Robots Entity, Lakshmanan Meyyappan, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new network centric architecture that can be used by first responders to effectively respond to crisis situations. The powerful network-centric concept originally developed for and mainly used in the military environment, can be effectively used for civilian security and emergency response missions. This paper also proposes the use of a swarm of intelligent robots as a part of the network-centric architecture to aid the first responders. The swarm of robots works in tandem with the first responders and provides them with the necessary information on a real time basis. The proposed network centric architecture with a …

An Analysis Of Perceptions Of Online Instruction By Department Chairs In The Field Of Higher Educational Administration In The United States, Edna Lynn Levernier Jan 2005

An Analysis Of Perceptions Of Online Instruction By Department Chairs In The Field Of Higher Educational Administration In The United States, Edna Lynn Levernier

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

The rapid global emergence of a multi-billion dollar electronic (e)-leaming industry has forced department chairs in the field of educational leadership and administration in higher education institutions across the United States to assess the value, quality, and legitimacy of online instruction. For many, the concept of online education significantly challenges deeply held pedagogical beliefs and educational values such as academic freedom, protection of intellectual property rights, academic integrity, and quality. For others, the "fit" of online education with existing departmental and institutional mission statements, cultures, budgets, reward systems, policies and procedures, is unclear or uncertain. In an age where "technology …

Two Separate Continually Online-Trained Neurocontrollers For A Unified Power Flow Controller, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Radha P. Kalyani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The crucial factor affecting the modern power systems today is load flow control. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) provides an effective means for controlling the power flow and improving the transient stability in a power network. The UPFC has fast complex dynamics and its conventional control is based on a linearized model of the power system. This paper presents the design of neurocontrollers to provide better damping during transient and dynamic control. Two separate neurocontrollers are used for controlling the UPFC, one neurocontroller for the shunt inverter and the other for the series inverter. Simulation studies carried out in …

World Health Law: Toward A New Conception Of Global Health Governance For The 21st Century, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2005

World Health Law: Toward A New Conception Of Global Health Governance For The 21st Century, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The international community joined together during the late twentieth century to form a world trade system. Although imperfect, the world trade system contains adjudicable and enforceable norms designed to facilitate global economic activity. Human health is at least as important as trade in terms of its effects on the wellbeing of populations. Moreover, health hazards-biological, chemical, and radionuclear-have profound global implications. Whether these threats' origins are natural, accidental, or intentional, the harms, as well as the response, transcend national frontiers and warrant a transnational response. Despite their high importance, the International Health Regulations (IHR) are antiquated, limited in scope, and …

Refocusing On Women: A New Direction For Policy And Research On Intimate Partner Violence, Lisa A. Goodman, Deborah Epstein Jan 2005

Refocusing On Women: A New Direction For Policy And Research On Intimate Partner Violence, Lisa A. Goodman, Deborah Epstein

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

A key question facing researchers of intimate partner violence is how the real-life contexts of victims’ lives should affect state policy. The bulk of recently adopted and much touted criminal justice reforms have taken the form of relatively inflexible, one-size-fits-all mandatory responses focused on counseling, restraining, and punishing batterers. Even the protection order system relies far more heavily on batterer treatment programs than on victim support to prevent future violence. Together, these reforms have largely sacrificed the contextualized, woman-centered focus from which the anti-domestic violence movement originated. Recently, however, a small body of research has emerged indicating that responding flexibly …

Conversion From Laparoscopic To Open Cholecystectomy: Multivariate Analysis Of Preoperative Risk Factors, M Tayeb, S A. Raza, M R. Khan, R Azami Jan 2005

Conversion From Laparoscopic To Open Cholecystectomy: Multivariate Analysis Of Preoperative Risk Factors, M Tayeb, S A. Raza, M R. Khan, R Azami

Department of Surgery Docs

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the gold standard in the treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis. Some patients require conversion to open surgery and several preoperative variables have been identified as risk factors that are helpful in predicting the probability of conversion. However, there is a need to devise a risk-scoring system based on the identified risk factors to (a) predict the risk of conversion preoperatively for selected patients, (b) prepare the patient psychologically, (c) arrange operating schedules accordingly, and (d) minimize the procedure-related cost and help overcome financial constraints, which is a significant problem in developing countries.AIM: This study was aimed …

An Approach To Determine The Need For Expanding Small Airports: A Case Study, Jeffrey A. Johnson

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Airports play an important role in the economic vitality of communities and surrounding areas. In developing and expanding an airport, there are many different variables that must be taken into account. One fundamental aspect of airport expansion is the need to hangar aircraft. The purpose of this study was to investigate constituent interest in building at least 10 new T-hangars and expanding the Blair Municipal Airport's (K46) services located in rural Blair, Nebraska (Washington County). A descriptive study questionnaire developed specifically for this study was used to collect the data from 1,232 certificated pilots in five surrounding counties of the …

The Process Of Becoming A Blue Ribbon School: Perceptions Of Participating Teachers And Principals, Dana Russina Harris Jan 2005

The Process Of Becoming A Blue Ribbon School: Perceptions Of Participating Teachers And Principals, Dana Russina Harris

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze the shared experiences of teachers and principals within selected schools in their quest of achieving the United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award in Georgia. In one sense, these schools are already successful. They were required to document five consecutive years of high and improving test scores as a prerequisite for consideration. Therefore, an attempt to better understand a process that could lead to continuous improvement and change in schools, as deemed necessary, was the fulcrum upon which this study rests. The researcher applied a theoretical …
