Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
I would like to give you a little background on how I came to be in documentary editing. I've loved history ever since fifth grade. Then in the summer after eighth grade my father and I took a genealogy class. I decided to research my great-great-grandfather, who served as a captain in the Civil War. For the research I went to the State Archives. Once there, I was enamored with it all. On my sixteenth birthday all I wanted to do was to spend the day researching at the Archives in Raleigh. I declared that "I'm gonna work there some …

Les Pratiques D'Intervention Portant Sur La Prévention Des Troubles Musculo-Squelettiques : Un Bilan Critique De La Littérature, Denys Denis, Marie St-Vincent, Caroline Jetté, Iuliana Nastasia, Daniel Imbeau
L’objectif poursuivi …
Codes Of Interaction, Timothy Michael Martin
Codes Of Interaction, Timothy Michael Martin
Theses and Dissertations
The ideas within this thesis are meant to clarify my explorations, research and painting practice during my studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. I expand on my general statements about being fascinated by advancing technologies and concerned about the after effects of these advancements. The writing explores my curiosity about the internal, skeletal structure of things and how they operate. I explain how the paintings are idiosyncratic hybrids that evoke animation, imaginary scientific propositions, blueprints, maps, and advancing technologies. The work combines these interests with my observations of day-to-day experiences. Isolated events provide found compositions which I then manipulate: a seemingly …

Post-Juvenile Brain Development Modulates Seizure Characteristics And Diazepam Efficacy In The Rat Pilocarpine-Se Model, William H. Holbert Ii
Theses and Dissertations
These studies were completed to examine how status epilpeticus seizure characteristics are modulated during post-juvenile brain development. This may determine if postnatal age in rats is a better identifier of stages of post-juvenile brain development. The first study fully detailed the acute discrete seizure phase of the rat pilocarpine-SE model. Results for this study showed that Racine behavioral severity score, spike frequency, and seizure severity during the acute discrete seizure phase change in relation to post-juvenile brain developmental stages. The second study fully detailed early and late patterns of status epilepticus. Results for this study displayed modulation of time in …

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a study of current research on effective teaching strategies in art beyond the European tradition content area of the Advanced Placement Art History (APAH) examination administered by the College Board. Three Advanced Placement Art History teachers participated in this study. Each teacher demonstrated successful and effective strategies in her APAH program. The criteria for selection required that each participant taught the class for three years (2001-4) and their students scored higher than the national average as published by the College Board. Each teacher discussed with the author how they teach the art beyond the European tradition content …
Country Views, Rebecca Massie
Country Views, Rebecca Massie
Theses and Dissertations
Over the years I have created many different images and explored a variety of media along my artistic journey. Similar images continue to occur in my work - images from my life as a child and as an adult in rural settings. I lived on a poultry farm and was involved in working with my parents there. When I married, my husband was a cattle farmer so I continued to live on a farm and use rural images in my work. Living in the country makes me constantly aware of the relationship between God, nature and man. I believe that …
Experimental Navigation And The Creative Process, Teresa A. Engle
Experimental Navigation And The Creative Process, Teresa A. Engle
Theses and Dissertations
For this creative project, I am exploring alternate methods of navigating urban environments, and ways in which this activity can inspire creativity. This process is intended to create a new awareness of the urban landscape, break out of the prescribed, and to inspire innovation. The range of possibilities for this way of navigating is vast, and part of the challenge of my experience has been defining boundaries, assigning variables, and using strategies for exploration making my process inherently morphological. I hope that my work here will encourage others to step out of their comfort zone and experience their environment …
From Typologies To Portraits: Catherine Opie's Photographic Manipulations Of Physiognomic Imagery, Jennifer T. Bridges
From Typologies To Portraits: Catherine Opie's Photographic Manipulations Of Physiognomic Imagery, Jennifer T. Bridges
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis proposes that California contemporary photographer Catherine Opie's Being and Having series (1991) and her Portrait series (1993-1996) parody the constraining binary gender discourse and stereotypes that emanate from it. In her art Opie uses familiar codes and identity discourses associated with traditional portrait photography and typological photographs to promote a postmodern and fluid model of gender identity. Her manipulation of photographic technique and subject matter validates cultural stereotypes of gender at the same time that it destabilizes them. Opie also simultaneously highlights fallacies such as the presumed objectivity and evidential force that is associated with the discourse of …
An Application Of Combinatorial Methods, Yingying Yang
An Application Of Combinatorial Methods, Yingying Yang
Theses and Dissertations
Probability theory is a branch of mathematics concerned with determining the long run frequency or chance that a given event will occur. This chance is determined by dividing the number of selected events by the number of total events possible, assuming these events are equally likely. Probability theory is simply enumerative combinatorial analysis when applied to finite sets. For a given finite sample space, probability questions are usually "just" a lot of counting. The purpose of this thesis is to provide some in depth analysis of several combinatorial methods, including basic principles of counting, permutations and combinations, by specifically exploring …

Zapatismo And Autonomous Social Movements: Reading The Communiqés Politically, Jordan Camp
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This study examines the Ejército Zapatista Liberación Nacional (EZLN) and Zapatista base communities contributions to an autonomous “revolutionary” theory and practice. The focus of this thesis is the evolution of Zapatismo as elaborated in the Zapatistas’ communiqués following the EZLN’s deceleration of war against the Mexican government on January 1, 1994, the same day that the North American Free Trade Agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico went into effect. This thesis investigates the Zapatistas’ communiqués as part of an effort to more fully engage their strategies of self-representation and articulation of a collective subject in which any number …

Public Plaintiffs And Private Facts: Should The "Public Figure" Doctrine Be Transplanted Into Privacy Law?, Susan M. Gilles
Public Plaintiffs And Private Facts: Should The "Public Figure" Doctrine Be Transplanted Into Privacy Law?, Susan M. Gilles
Nebraska Law Review
When libel law conflicts with the First Amendment, the United States Supreme Court has held that the measure of protection received by the press depends primarily on whether the plaintiff is a public or private person. This article questions whether this “public figure doctrine” is, or should become, part of the constitutional test applied to tort actions for invasion of privacy. This inquiry is made more urgent by the willingness of at least two members of the current Supreme Court, in Bartnicki v. Vopper, to incorporate the public figure doctrine into constitutional privacy law. Part II of this article …

Kennewick Man, Kinship, And The "Dying Race": The Ninth Circuit's Assimilationist Assault On The Native American Graves Protection And Repatriation Act, Allison M. Dussias
Nebraska Law Review
This article examines the Bonnichsen case and the Ninth Circuit's controversial and fundamentally flawed rewriting of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), in light of the history of Native Americans' encounters with anthropologists and of the goals that NAGPRA was intended to achieve. Part II discusses the history of anthropologists' activities involving Native Americans and the remains of their deceased kin, revealing the longstanding practices that NAGPRA was enacted to redress. This historical background provides the context in which NAGPRA must be understood and interpreted, and in light of which decisions under the statute should be made. …
Let's Not Call The Whole Thing Off Just Yet: A Response To Samuel Issacharoffs Suggestion To Scuttle Section 5 Of The Voting Rights Act, Michael J. Pitts
Let's Not Call The Whole Thing Off Just Yet: A Response To Samuel Issacharoffs Suggestion To Scuttle Section 5 Of The Voting Rights Act, Michael J. Pitts
Nebraska Law Review
The Voting Rights Act is forty this year, and in less than two years, several of its key provisions will expire. Perhaps the most important of these expiring provisions is the preclearance mechanism of section 5, a provision that has been hailed as its heart. Because it's not 1965 anymore, one can argue that no compelling reason exists to keep the same "unique and stringent" remedy that section 5 provides in place past 2007. Section 5, as currently written, represents an extraordinary mechanism in our law, as it bars certain (primarily Southern) state and local governments, commonly known as the …
An Analysis Of Fragmented Land-Use *Policy And Land-Use Change: The Case Study Of Metropolitan Pittsburgh, Richard J. Hoch
An Analysis Of Fragmented Land-Use *Policy And Land-Use Change: The Case Study Of Metropolitan Pittsburgh, Richard J. Hoch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research examines the relationship between remotely sensed land-use changes and particular land-use policies within metropolitan Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1992 to 2002. During the 1990's the Pittsburgh region experienced a tremendous expansion of residential and urban land-use change while simultaneously experiencing a population decline. Within the metropolitan Pittsburgh area there are 525 local and independent municipal governments with the legislative right to enact or not to enact land-use planning policies enabled by the Pennsylvania Municipal Planning Code. This fragmentation creates uneven intra-urban development patterns at the urban scale. This research demonstrates that certain land-use changes that occurred during the study …
Amending Subsoil With Composted Poultry Litter: Effects On Soil Physical And Chemical Properties, Turfgrass Establishment And Weed Pressure, Mili Mandal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Experiments were established in fall 2003 at West Virginia University to evaluate the effects of incorporation of composted poultry litter (CPL) on subsoil physical and chemical properties, Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa Pratensis L.) establishment, root depth, and weed pressure. Twenty cm of topsoil was removed and CPL was incorporated to a depth of 12.7 cm at 10%, 20%, and 40% v/v prior to seeding or sodding. Composted plots were compared to N-fertilized (454 Kg ha-1) and control plots. Positive linear increases in total water content (thetaT), organic matter, pH, and CEC were observed following compost incorporation with a decrease in …

Three Essays On Immigration And Outsourcing, Arsen V. Melkumian
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation includes essays on legal and illegal immigrations and outsourcing. Chapter 1 introduces the paths that economics has blazed into in the areas of legal and illegal immigration and outsourcing. The first essay, in Chapter 2, presents a Cournot duopoly model of a domestic unionized firm and a foreign firm, where the domestic firm has an option to shift all of its production abroad. An increase in the bargaining power of an employment oriented union will increase domestic output and utility of the union.;The second essay, in Chapter 3, examines illegal immigration in the U.S. from Mexico using annual …

Worship And The Ministry Of Reconciliation: Turning Walls Into Tables, Mark S. Hanson
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
Thank you for the invitation to be with you. One regret I have had, not the only one, is that I have never attended the Institute of Liturgical Studies. Each spring my colleague, William Beckstrand, the cantor at University Lutheran Church of Hope, Minneapolis, would begin to invite and encourage me to join him for his annual journey to the institute at Valparaiso University. As I worked with Bill I began to realize that this event was like a pool of refreshing water that beckoned him through the often taxing days of Lent, Holy Week, and Triduum-"I know I …

Objectivity And The Embedded Reporter: An Examination Of A Reporter's Ability To Remain Objective While Embedded With Military Troops, Tamara Zaleski Turse
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This thesis examines the program of embedding journalists into military units during the Second Gulf War to determine if journalists can provide an objective view of the war to the public back home. To fully understand the scope of embedding, this work first reviews the relationship between the media and the military by tracing the evolution of the American war correspondent starting with the U.S. Civil War through to the Second Gulf War. As public opinion is often formed, at least in part, by news reports, whether print or broadcast, this thesis surveyed the public to see if they felt …

"The Republic Of Women": Notes Towards A Critical Assessment, Mariela Méndez
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
"The largest changefor us in a qualitative one, to learn how to think of power in feminine terms, without resorting to masculine codes,"1 concludes a participant in "The Republic of Women," a year-long project aimed at raising consciousness around gender issues among women engaged in political and unionist activities in contemporary Argentina. Comments of a similar nature abound in the discussion sessions following the screening of Salt of the Earth, a 1953 American film about the plight of Mexican workers that helped the project's organizers foster a critical dialogue around gender constraints within different Argentinean organizations (Catton Alvarez …

Paediatric Palliative And Supportive Care: Caring For Life: The Needs Of Children And Families In Western Australia, Leanne Monterosso, Linda Kristjanson, Marianne Phillips, Sue Rowell
Research outputs pre 2011
Palliative care is the relief of symptoms, regardless of their impact on the underlying disease process. The philosophical underpinning of current international paediatric palliative and supportive care models is that palliative and supportive care should be offered to all children with life threatening or chronic illnesses/disabilities with complex care needs. This approach allows the integration of cure-directed treatment and palliative care. allowing children to benefit from both philosophies of care. In Australia, there is increasing recognition of the need for the development of appropriate paediatric palliative care services, especially in Western Australia where supportive care services for children with life-limiting …

Research outputs pre 2011
This report assesses the wellbeing of the professions of policing, nursing and teaching in Western Australia. The findings are derived from surveys of how individuals think about their occupations, their colleagues and employers. The level of wellbeing affects the ease of attracting and retaining staff and the quality of delivered services.
We present and discuss summary results of responses to questionnaires sent in 2005 to 5,180 police, 6,000 nurses and 9,000 teachers. Each of the professions is here regarded as a single group. The number of respondents is sufficient to allow many more detailed analyses to be performed and reported …

The Law And Racism: Some Reflections On The Australian Experience, Laksiri Jayasuriya
Research outputs pre 2011
Racism in Australian society is not something new and surprising. For a variety of historical and socio-political reasons it has existed from the earliest days ·of colonisation, and there have been a variety of strategies tried over the years to deal with racism as a social problem. One strategy most frequently resorted to, especially in recent years, has been to use the law as a means of combating racism. Before considering the questions of law and racism, we need first to clarify what we mean by the term racism...

An Analysis Of Media Perceptions Regarding African Americans In Gettsyburg Throughout 1963, Brendan M. Shelley
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
On Monday, September 28, 1863, the Compiler, Gettysburg Pennsylvania’s Democratic newspaper, published an article taken from the Sussex Messenger about a black man forcing himself onto a white woman. The girl, daughter of Mr. Daniel Messick, was going from her father’s house which was just outside of the town limits to a neighbor’s home when she was suddenly assaulted by a black man. The man jumped out from behind thick brush and grabbed the girl. A struggle ensued and the assailant ripped off the girl’s clothing and put his hand over her mouth in order to keep her from …

"You Must All Be Interned": Identity Among Internees In Great Britain During World War Ii, Elizabeth A. Atkins
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
Between 1933 and 1940, the United States, Great Britain and most other developed nations saw an influx of German refugees entering their borders attempting to be free of the tyranny of Hitler’s National Socialism. Many of those fleeing from Germany were intellectuals: authors, teachers, artists, or thinkers who faced persecution in their homeland. For the men, women, and children who chose the British Isles as their new home, Great Britain symbolized hope for a life free from persecution. By 1941, however, many refugees from Germany found themselves arrested and put into camps, not by the Nazis, but by their protectors, …
